oh my god there's layers to this because going along with your "everyone knows jason is RH but they're ignoring it" hc, his classes have the best attendance, highest rate of returned and completed work, most effort put in by students, highest enrollment, etc., not only because they're afraid of him, but also because he's they're hero, and if he isn't, he works with the bats, and one of them is probably their hero. after a few years, instead of the high achievers getting PhDs in the sciences, gotham is turning out the world's best english and journalism majors. this, of course, cuts down on rogue activity and eventually turns gotham into a cultural center and the epicenter of a neo education and pro library movement. jason truly becomes the change he wanted to see in the world.
(ps don't take this as anti science, i LOVE science)
hahahhh YESS the students he teaches (high school age) are always the most well-behaved in the district, a phenomenon the other teachers are still to this day confused about (other that Damian. He just smirks when it’s mentioned haha) and only when those students start growing up to become teachers are there other educators aware of the fact that Jason is RH. Still, he denies it whenever asked—but they all know it’s a load of bullshit. They’ve seen RH grading essays before and Mr. Todd with bandages on his hands. It’s not so much a secret as it is an unsaid thing. They all know it, they just also know not to talk about it.
when one of the first kids Jason ever taught became a teacher, Jason was overjoyed. More followed. The libraries got voulenteers, kids started helping clean up the streets and gangs had no new members. Even blackmail didn’t work to gain new recruits because, should anyone try to blackmail a kid, the kid would just join RH’s gang instead haha
You know the whole Bruce can't cook schtick that we're all on? What if it's the opposite? Competent cook Bruce who loves making large, complicated meals for the family and loving dad Bruce who wants to feed his kids constantly. Bruce who bakes cookies for study groups, brings Tupperware full of soup, nourishing stews when the kids are sick or depressed or injured, visits with an entire cooler of meals prepped for their fridges. Bruce who cooks snacks and dinner before they go on patrol, fusses when the kids won't eat, knows all their preferences and allergies, Bruce who keeps ladling out extra servings because the kids aren't eating enough, Bruce who's love language is good food because that's what he had from Alfred.
conversations overheard through the batkid com lines pt 88 (masterpost here)
Dick: -worst part of growing up in the manor is the amount of time we all spent around Alfred for our adolescence.
Bruce: ...you all love Alfred, what on earth are you talking about?
Tim: no he's right, B. we pick things up from him and it's humiliating.
Bruce, exasperated: like what?
Dick: i went to London once for a case and i had to ride the bus while i was there, and a guy shoved into me and i instinctively called him a wanker because i grew up hearing Alfred call people wankers whenever they tried to cut him off on the drive to school, and the entire bus made fun of me the entire drive for being an American poser.
Tim: ...*snort*
Dick, betrayed: WHY ARE YOU LAUGHING I THOUGHT YOU WERE ON MY SIDE?!?
Tim: i am- i am! i'm just.... *snorts again*
Dick: fuck you.
Bruce: i don't think you can blame that on Alfred. he very rarely curses.
Tim: around you. Damian called me a 'twattish handlebar of a cunt' the other day, and when i asked where the fuck he got that from, he said he heard Alfred mumble it under his breath after serving drinks to one of the egotistical pricks at WE you had round the week before.
Dick: yeah- Damian gets the worst of it, because not only does he pick stuff up from Alfred, but he also picks stuff up from Jason that Jason picked up from Alfred when he was twelve, so it's like when you run a word through google translate a bunch of times and it comes back completely different.
Bruce: ok- Jason doesn't speak like Alfred at all, so i don't know what you're even referring to.
*connecting ping*
Jason: wagwan, sluts.
*silence*
Bruce: ...ok there is no way he got that from Alfred. you can blame all of your stuff on Alfred all you want, he's just like this organically.
Jason, confused: hm?
Dick, pointedly: Jay, where'd you pick up saying 'wagwan' from?
Jason, casually: oh, i knew some English kids in the alley before i got adopted.
Bruce, vindicated: see-
Jason: -also Alfred used to say it when picking me up from school as a kid. i believe it was a terrible attempt at flirting with my social studies teacher, who was his age and also British. why?
Bruce: ...jesus christ
Dick: case and point.
Tim: yeah i’ll never forget that time when i was Robin and the Joker was pulling some shit in the city centre and we were watching on the monitors in the batcave and Alfred very quietly muttered under his breath ‘what an utter nonce’ and then pretended he hadn’t said anything when i asked what nonce meant.
Wally: Why are there no Flying Graysons any more? I get there was the whole accident or something but why didn't they just, I don't know, just continue it on?
Dick: Well, it was a family business and 60% of my family weren't breathing.
Wally:
Dick: It sort of made it hard to do flips and stuff. Yeah 😐

Imagine, if you will, a young J. Jonah Jameson and a young Perry White, cutting their teeth at the Daily Sentinel, under the watchful eye of Britt Reid...
I love those tropes where Hiccup has dragon traits and characteristics without being half dragon physically
Like of fucking course Hiccup is talking to dragons in their own language, of course they flock towards him without anybody's input when he needs help, of course he jumps off cliffs and has no sense of danger from height, of course altitude sickness is not even a thing to him, of course he'll hiss at you like a disgruntled terror when he's too sleepy and cranky and of course he'll eat the raw fish without noticing when the twins try to prank him with it, of course the one proper weapon he made is on fire, of course he finds eels repulsive, of course he has no problem scaling cliffs or slinking through rough rocky terrain, of course he feels cranky and cooped up when he hadn't gone flying for a while, of course he growls when he's too angry. Next thing you'll know, the kid is allergic to blue oleanders and dragon root
Not Toothless privately thinking that his human was born in the wrong species' body but it's okay, it's not Hiccup's fault these things happen

welp, that was a wild episode where everyone was far more calm than reasonably expected
its like practically canon confirmed the meltsners are more of a "sugar-free" "low calorie" "healthy alternative" sort of family but i would like to argue they have a shelf in their pantry stocked with instant ramen
im still thinking about this a few hours later so don't mind me hyperfocusing on ramen's place in the meltsner household. like
buck oliver, brand new to the meltsner house, finding the same brand he always picked up at gas stations back when he traveled highways with mr. skint, and feeling some sort of relief in a familiar taste of "home"
katrina meltsner needing something quick to eat in the ten minutes before driving out to one of those teacher conferences she always busies herself with
eugene meltsner needing something to eat while surrounding himself in his research about the hippocampus
katrina getting home late on a friday afternoon after a long day of teaching and wanting something to eat before hurrying to catch buck's football game at some high school towns away
buck, awake way too late at night, curled up on the couch eating ramen and watching tv while his parents are asleep across the hall
buck, crashing in his dad's lab to help analyze algae samples and bringing two packs of ramen with him because katrina's off in chicago and there's not much else around the house to eat
the meltsner family in baltimore, seated on unpacked boxes in their new apartment, eating ramen because it's quick, easy, and the only thing they've been able to find amidst their boxes of books, tech, and science equipment
i dont know why this is my hyperfixation of the day but it is XDXD
Batman (1940) #590
I keep hearing John Green say he's retired from working and lemme just say John Green is the least retired retired person I've ever seen.
I am retired!!! I retired in October of 2017 and have kept my promise not to exchange my labor for money.
Since 2017, I have only done stuff that I thought was interesting or useful regardless of whether it pays, because we have more than enough money, and despite what billionaires might tell you, there is literally no difference between "more than enough" and "much more than enough."
So I no longer work for money. But in retirement one must keep busy, which is why I have taken on an unpaid gig as the social media intern for a coffee and tea business that donates 100% of its profit to charity.
I also sometimes travel to universities and other places to speak in support of Partners in Health and global access to tuberculosis care, and sometimes I write books because writing makes me happy, and every Tuesday I make a video on vlogbrothers, and I make a podcast about the world cup with my friends from high school, and so on, but none of these things constitutes work. These are just Retirement Projects, which are essential to a happy retirement.
Thinking about the riders starting to spend more time with Hiccup after the first movie and having him start to come out of his shell and they're all just thinking, "Oh what's the worst that could happen? He acts like Stoic? Psh, no problem!"
Then time goes on and all they can think is, "Dear Odin no, he's Gobber,"

What's your take on the Eugene memory loss trilogy? (Ep 564-566)
it’s such a fun transition between the novacom saga and everything with leonard meltsner! Eugene’s research losing funding is so relevant to me as a scientist right now, but hopefully I won’t lose my memory because of it haha!! I honestly hope that with novacom 2.0 around the corner, they reference some of these wild plot points. Eugene and Katrina having to explain all of it to Buck would be so entertaining. he probably thinks that the green ring was the biggest thing that they’ve ever dealt with, wait until he finds out about the TV mind control 😂
