I'm about to make some connections, need everyone to walk with me here.

So in Detective Comics Annual #11 (14 Oct 2009), we get this scene. Where there is an attempted sexual assault on Damian via a woman who is the embodiment of lust.

After that, we get some of the more egregious examples of Damian making sexist comments. Most often towards Stephanie, but Babs isn't exempt either. World's Finest #3/#4 (23 Dec 2009/27 Jan 2010).

Then the same behavior continues to a slightly lesser, but still very present degree, in Batgirl #7 (10 Feb 2010). In the last page here, you can see Steph talking him through how one of his comments in particular is a double standard.

Now, I'm not saying it was by any means intentional by the writers, as the annual was pretty early in Damian's run as Robin and it's never brought up or addressed directly in anything I've read after. And a ten year old boy in the 2010s making sexist comments isn't a new concept, I'm not trying to excuse it as "this is okay actually!" either, in text he gets corrected and told to stop nearly every time. But I can't help to think maybe there could be a connection between his lashing out at women and the initial assault.

Finally made Duke & Cass team up episode! Always had this episode in mind since the beginning of Overload series, so I'm so glad I finished it! Hope you guys enjoy it!

okay but also like. within the batfam i would argue that the good ol' days continuity problem mostly exists because of zero year

like within the version of batfam continuity that existed 1986-2011 (which is to say mostly post-crisis but also extends backwards to some pre-crisis/bronze age stuff that remained the same) there was a type of darkness that began to make itself known only after dick left robin, which can be summarized as "crossover events" -- no no wait i'm serious come back

like. dick leaves robin. spends the 80s going through a bunch of truly harrowing shit in new teen titans. crisis on infinite earth happens -- mostly important in a comic-publication sense, because after coie dc starts having yearly company-wide crossover events where the world is placed in existential danger!! in fact, in the very first post-coie crossover event, legends, jason is very badly injured. then we have jason's new, darker backstory, and the storylines leading up to his death. we have batman: the cult, which i mention because it's one of the very last jason robin stories and also the precursor to what i'll call the Gotham Is In Disarray Event.

the Gotham Is In Disarray Event can be summarized as: some malevolent force has taken over gotham, on a city-wide scale. the bats, police, and civilian government are fundamentally not in control of what is happening, and you (an ordinary civilian) could die at any time!!! spooky!! the ur-Gotham Is In Disarray Event is, of course, no man's land, and since no man's land Gotham Is In Disarray Events have happened regularly since -- in recent years, at a near continuous rate (city of bane, joker war, fear state, failsafe, gotham war --)

so dick left robin, and then Gotham Is In Disarray Events started happening, and escalating. this makes sense! robin dick faced problems, but they were "nearly dying at the hands of two-face" problems, rather than "everyone in america's third-largest city is being joker gassed at once" problems.

except. of course. except for zero year.

zero year is a classic Gotham Is In Disarray Event. of course it is! i'm sure snyder took inspiration from nml and other post-crisis Gotham Is In DIsarray Events. and it is, obviously, one of the very first things that happens to bruce as batman. and it's still canon (see: new history of the dc universe), because it's the only batman origin story we have that's not 40 years old and written by frank miller (although. b:yo is also still canon. do NOT think about that one too hard.)

what are we to make of this??? have Gotham Is In Disarray Events been happening the whole time????? THROWS UP HANDS.

Zero Year absolutely is emblematic of this, but I think there’s a solid argument that this is also being cemented by World’s Finest.

World’s Finest is arguably the main source we currently have of ‘what happened when Dick was Robin’ outside of his various origins and various transition-to-Nightwing retellings.

It also, while having a lot of Silver Age nostalgia worked into it, is not afraid of being involved in Giant DC Crossovers.

Indeed, the villain of the very first arc, Nezha, is directly connected to the at-the-time contemporary set Lazarus Planet event.

Outside of these new stories, so much of what actually happened in that block of years is ‘whatever favourite Silver or Bronze Age story the writer vaguely remembers’.

If Bruce and Dick are running around dealing with DC Event level threats in the deliberately nostalgic period piece, I’d argue they’re supposed to be read as having that post-COIE ‘darkening’ transition as being slowly ground down to far less importance.

#mmm idk. dick has been getting at least peripherally involved in big events since the silver age (when big events actually became a thing)#again though largely via world's finest or another team comic (so at least that's true to form)#the BIGGEST difference imo is the focus on gotham/the bats in general #because in the silver age it was just bruce and dick and babs over on earth-1 and occasionally bruce and dick and helena over on earth-2 #traditionally events like these would have had a larger impact on the flashfamily and superfamily as they're the ones who started/were at #the center of it all #and that's still kind of the case #i really think Something Is Happening In Gotham trend starting at least with contagion is more a product of the bat cast becoming #so large than anything #that and bat titles always bringing in more readers - but that's slightly besides the point here #being so honest i really think that if you try to trace the issue of darker and more complex storylines down to their vedy roots you would #arrive at barry allen flash #which is partly why they killed him in coie #to my knowledge he's the first example of a superhero being put on trial for murder #and he's also what introduces the very concept of a multiverse or an “event”#like truthfully the biggest difference imo between what's going on now and what was going on in the silver/bronze age is that now gotham is #treated like it's the center of the universe #even though it hasn't really changed that the more far reaching things are actually happening to the left of them in other titles and just #...sweeping them along in it #idk it's nearly 5 am this may all be besides the point #<-prev #dc #batman

I keep seeing the take that authors on AO3 need to stop deleting their fics and instead to orphan them without any explanation of the consequences of orphaning a fic and as an author I really need to say something to this.

Stop telling people to just orphan their fics.

Orphaning a fic means giving up any and all ownership over it. No way to claim it back, edit it or delete it. Yes it's an archive but an author should still have the right to delete their work if they feel like they don't want it to be up anymore.

Readers always scream for authors to orphan their fics instead of deleting because they feel like they have a right to the fanworks that is shared with them for free. If it's so important to you to not lose a fic, download it. Also comment and encourage the authors, instead of telling them to give up all ownership to their work.

To authors, if you think about deleting your fics, there are other options you should employ first. If you don't want it connected to your name, put it into an anonymous collection. As long as it's in there, noone can see you wrote it, you still can edit ot or delete it and moderate comments on it. You can even move it to anther account, just create another one, add it as co author and then take your main account off. Then you can still edit it from your second account but it's no longer connected to your account.

If you don't want it to show anymore put it in a unrevealed collection, that way, the fic won't show up but it's still there, you can still see it, read comments and make it public again.

If you feel the urge to delete your fic, try one of these options first and see how you feel about it after a while, you can still delete or orphan afterwards, but this hopefully makes your decision easier.

Only orphan a fic if you're 100% sure. This is permanent, there is no way back from that, AO3 support will NOT help you if you did it on accident or change your mind. Don't listen to people telling you to just orphan it, make very sure, this is what you want.
