She’s PROTECTING HIM FROM THE FIREWORKS, MY HEART -
mad at you
The Smootherizing De-Wrinklifier
Luke: [age 16, holding a dress shirt] "Dad, do you know how to flatten a shirt?"
Me: "Flatten a shirt?"
Beth: "I think he means 'de-wrinklize'."
Me: "DE-WRINKLIZE?"
Luke: "Yeah, you know, make it smooth."
Me: "Do you mean 'iron a shirt'?"
Luke: "Yeah. Iron a shirt. With the hot metal thing."
Me: "Yes, I know how to iron a shirt. Or de-wrinklize it. Or smooth it. Or flatten it."
Mom: "But can you de-wrink-smoo-flatten-alithize it?"
Me: "Obviously. I'm not an amateur."
Luke: "OK, but can you show me?"
Me: "Sure. Probably have to dust off the Smootherizing De-Wrinklifier, since it's been two or three years since we last used it. Mom's better at it, but yes, I can show you."
Luke: "I know Mom uses the hair straightener on collars and cuffs, but you have to use the iron on the whole shirt, right?"
Me: "That hair-straightener ironing trick for collars is one of Mom's awesome life hacks when you don't have time for a real iron. But it's not the usual way of doing things."
Luke: "Oh. I thought that's just how you do it."
Me: "Bless you, child, for you have never seen people iron clothes much. It's just not a thing we do nowadays."
Luke: "You old folks and your ancient ways."
Me: [intoning] "Yes, my son. Let me teach you the ancient tools and traditions of our people. After we use the Iron of Fabric Smoothing, I can teach you the Origins of the Phrase 'Dialing a Phone Number' and then How to Set Up a VCR to Record That TV Show You Like."
Luke: "Nah, I'm good — I just need a shirt without wrinkles."
Me: [shaking my head] "Kids these days."
Luke: [shaking his head] "Old people these days."
The wonderful mind of a child. #EthicalMemes
You ain’t lying, kid.
This kid 😂
“I wish we lived closer to a forest. Then I wouldn’t have to just watch shows about people who play in the forest.”
— Phia, watching Ronja (a studio ghibli series available on Amazon Prime, btw)
Do yourself and your kids a favor and go watch Enola Holmes now.
I’m desperately hoping this becomes a franchise.
So good.
Bruh
[Scene: Luke, age 15, has said something worthy of an eyeroll...]
Me: [rolling eyes] "Bruh."
Luke: "Dad, you cannot just say bruh like that."
Me: "Of course I can."
Luke: "No. You can say things like bro, or dude, but you're too old to say bruh."
Beth: [age 12] "My friends and I say bro all the time to each other."
Wife: "Wait. Bro and bruh are different?"
Beth: "Yeah."
Wife: "So they're spelled differently?"
Me: "Yes, bruh is b-r-u-h."
Wife: [rolling eyes] "Bruh."
Luke: "Look, you guys CANNOT say that."
Wife: "What's the difference between bro and bruh?"
Luke: "Bro is something you say when you're kind of like referring directly to a friend, like 'dude' but with more snark."
Me: "But 'bruh' is more like an exclamation of sarcasm. Like a verbal eyeroll."
Wife: "But people say bro like that too."
Luke: "Bro is more like a label for the person you're talking to, as if you said their name in the same tone of voice, while bruh is more like saying 'jeez' or something about something that person said."
Me: "Duuuude."
Luke: "OK, like that."
Me: "That wasn't a bro."
Wife: "And even girls say bro to each other?"
Beth: [shrugging] "Seriously, my friends and I say that probably once every ten minutes to each other."
Me: [shaking my head] "Bruh."
Luke: "STOP IT! YOU CAN'T SAY THAT! You're not saying it right!"
Wife: "We're saying it just like you do, but maybe it sounds different out of the mouths of 40-something-old parents."
Luke: "IT SOUNDS WRONG."
Me: "Dude."
Luke: "See, that's fine."
Wife: "Bruh."
Luke: "STOP THAT!"
