See, you don't understand how much of a whore Derek is for Stiles. How fucking gone he is over this spastic, pale as fuck, beautiful creature. the reason i prefer characters like allison, theo, ethan, aiden, tracy, meredith and jackson to characters like derek, peter, argent and deucalion is because the former are teenagers who did bad things and the latter are adults who did bad things

Honestly Derek is closer to the age of the teens than the adults. He's at most only 22 years old. Like that's still in that stage where people tend to act more like a teen than an adult. He has severe trauma that's stunted his mental growth. I'm not shocked at all that Derek acts more like the teens than the adults who are in their thirties and fourties.
Plus it doesn't help that Derek came back to the place where all his trauma happened, constantly being triggered and in survival mode. When you're triggered, you don't act and think like the age you are, you act and think like the age your trauma happened, which for Derek was at 15 years old.
Derek definitely fucks up a lot. But he also tries, he tries to do the right thing. Derek is in his own age group that no one else is in. He's in between the teens and adults.
When I started watching Teen Wolf in my early thirties, before I even knew of the Derek's age fiasco, I looked at him and saw a kid, someone maybe just out of high school. Literally didn't think he was any older than 20 because of how he acted and honestly he looked really young with no facial hair.
I feel like it's not fair to lump him in with the adults simply because he's legally an adult. I didn't see Derek as an adult until season 3, when he actually acted older, but still fucking up a lot because he's learning. Season 4 he acted even more like an adult. It felt like we got to see the transition from teen to adult with Derek.
Also our frontal lobes don't actually fully develop until you're early thirties. The fully developed frontal lobe at 25 thing is a myth. Studies show it's more around 32, and even then we are still learning and growing so it doesn't exactly fully stop developing either.

Fanfic idea is essentially this:
After Derek leaves Beacon Hills, Stiles starts leaving voicemails on his phone; he knows itās out of commission but itās strangely comforting; sometimes he just rambles about nothing, other times he lets him on some new juicy town gossip and supernatural happenings to keep him updated; it goes on long enough he suspects Derek will never hear these voice messages and one evening, with that in mind, he ends up telling Derek he loves him; he quickly hangs up and realizes he hadnāt even admitted his feelings to *himself* let aloneāso he stops leaving voice messages and pretends it never happened
Fast forward to Stilesā FBI internship where he convinces them to let him on the mission so he can get Derek out of the crossfire (rip toe) and NOW, Stiles and Derek are making their journey back to Beacon Hills with much left unsaid between themā¦
And yes at some point theyāre at a motel and stiles steps out for a bit to get them some food. Meanwhile Derek gets his phone back in commission with an inbox FULL of voice mails. He assumes itās mostly Scott and supernatural related only for it to be Stiles Stiles Stiles
And Stiles gets back with their food and coffee to realize Derekās been listening to the voice emails and starts freaking out but hoping he hasnāt heard the last one
