“One Big Self: Prisoners of Louisiana” (1998–2002) by Deborah Luster, this series of photos were captured in three different Louisiana state prisons. Luster spent six years to produce an archive of formal inmate portraits, printed using silver gelatin emulsion on metal plates.

"The process in selecting these pieces were mainly what were deemed as works that commented on the battles black people/POC have to overcome within this life, similar to the one JMB faced and overcame. The conflicts we face within the world and how we are perceived ("NOTARY"), the physical conflicts we face within others ("ERNOK", untitled 1982) and the conflicts we face within our own mind ("HEAD", untitled 1983). I interpreted these pieces in that way and that's what caused those to be chosen."

At this present moment,

I feel small and insignificant, unimportant and forgotten, I feel insecure and not confident, I am hurt.

I am missing people, things, places and the feelings that they illicit

I, in this present moment, feel lost.

And in no disrespect, irreverence or blasphemy do I mean this, but I even feel forgotten by God.

But that’s just a testament to my frailty, my minuscule person and personality, to my humanity.

I’ve gotten everything I’ve asked for, worked for, hurt others for—accidentally or purposely.

I am so low right now and I just really need a guiding light back “home”.
