I used to think that because someone else once hurt me that I needed to continue to hurt myself. But my darlings I have found that there is no truth to that statement. He hurt me, so I'm going to love me. He stole my childhood, so I'm going to make my future worth living for. He abused his power, so I am going to use mine to inspire others to fight back. He made me feel like I didn't deserve to nourish my body, so I now feed myself with both food and self love. He had a negative impact on my life, so I'm going to make a positive impact on someone else's. He made me feel disgusted to even look in the mirror let alone speak kindly to myself, so I am going to continue to live knowing that I incredibly beautiful warrior that has overcome so many battles. He caused many nights of tears flowing as I stared blankly at my bedroom ceiling, so now I have shown him that he no longer controls me, that I can speak up against his horrible actions, and that while he took so very much from me, he did not take my power to overcome his darkness. Other people do not get to decide our destiny. You have the right to fight back and make this life exactly what you have always dreamt of it being. You get to make the decision that you no longer want your past to define your future. Only 1 in 10 of child sexual predators will ever see a day behind bars. This means that 90% are walking free, able to abuse again. While there is a public perception that child predators look like monsters, they are often mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, teachers - people who children know and trust. New York law doesn't currently protect sexually abused children, it protects pedophiles. WHY? I urge lawmakers to take a giant look in the mirror and ask themselves how they can sleep at night, knowing that they are doing nothing to help innocent children whose very souls are being ripped from their bodies. Traumatized children not only have to endure sexual abuse in the state of New York, they have to then turn around and be their own advocate. Yesterday's rally at the NY Capitol was a success, but we still have a lot of work to do. Right now, there are children being sexually abused. I urge @nygovcuomo and lawmakers to place the Omnibus Child Victims Act on the highest level of importance. While free tuition in NY is important, sexual abuse costs each child an average of $210,000 over the course of their lifetime. Not to mention that sexual abuse leads to learning disabilities and mental health issues, which have staggering costs. These override free tuition, so it is critical that the Omnibus Child Victims Act is PASSED this year! We must protect Kids in the state of NY, the nation and the world. Stand up and be leaders! The law must NOT protect child sexual predators.
