Welcome to the Family

I'm never sure how to start a blog. This is, like, the third or fourth I've attempted. Honestly, I didn't even mean to start this. I only got on tumblr in the first place to read my friend's writing, then I noticed that I was on an account that, to be completely honest, I don't even remember why I had. So I decided to rebrand it, and I figured "Hey, if you're going to put in actual effort here, you should actually do something with it." So, here we are. I wanted to make this blog as genuine as possible. The aesthetic, name, and photos are all references to my favorite musician, George Watsky, that I feel fit me appropriately and/or I just liked. "The Peach Who Bruised"- A reference to "The Price of Growing Up" Peace Sign- A reference to "Tiny Glowing Screens" Match Stick- A reference to "Dreams and Boxes" I will be adopting the alias of Great Value Jesus. GVJ for short. I came up with it while thinking of a username, and thought it was funny because A. I work at Walmart. and B. I look a lot like the common depiction of white Jesus. This blog is going to be... interesting, to say the least. See, I like to write, and I like to talk, and I will be doing a bit of both. You may see book and movie "reviews," fandom posting, shit posting, life updates, random ranting, and just various posts about things I enjoy. I'm a cisgender, (recently discovered) queer, engaged 24-year old nerd who spends most of his time playing DND, watching various movies/tv shows, working or sleeping. I love to write, and I'm an aspiring professional wrestler. I rarely have time to read physical books nowadays, so I tend to listen to my books at work. Over the past two years, I'd wager that I've listened to at least 50 books? Idk maybe that's too high. Anyway, it's 3:25 in the morning, my fiancé is asleep next to me, and my eyes are getting heavy. So, if anybody takes the time to read this, remember that you are amazing. You are beautiful, and I'm glad you're here. Welcome to the family. -GVJ

Steve and Robin join Eddie’s bowling league and he hates them so much because they don’t take it seriously. Then he hates them even more because they’re turning him into the type of guy that complains about people not taking bowling seriously.

They are the worst players in the league.

They are so bad that one time they scored negative points because the head of the league took two points off their game when the ball slipped out of Robin’s hand mid-swing and hit him in the shin.

Eddie secretly wishes they’d get kicked out but the other guys like playing against them because they’re “good fun.” Also, Steve got his dad to sponsor the league.

What’s most infuriating about this whole thing is Eddie has seen them at the bowling alley before. One time he came in to practice and they were some kid’s birthday party at the other end of lane.

Steve bowled a perfect game! Robin damn near did the same thing!!

He keeps telling people that they’re bad on purpose and no one believes him!

Every Thursday night, Steve and Robin roll up to Hawkins Lanes in the worst bowling shirts you’ve ever seen to eat shitty pizza and bowl a thirteen. And that is exactly what they do.

It’s infuriating. Eddie is infuriated.

He would lose his mind if he found out that the two of them sit in Steve’s car before they come in and roll a dice set Dustin gave them to decide their score for the night. He would actually go insane.

He’s going to be in Hellfire one day and Dustin is going to he telling a funny story about his brother. He’s going to say that his brother and his not-girlfriend bet each other that they’d score less points than each other in their club and then scored a negative number.

Eddie is going to scream.

Hi, guys! It's been a while!

I have been struggling a lot recently post-election, and even moreso post inauguration. It's been a living hell in the US since November. But I don't want to talk about that here. I want this blog to be a place of positivity. So, I want to talk about the one thing that has been my biggest mental escape from reality.

I want to talk about Cobra Kai.

I first started watching Cobra Kai when Netflix bought it, but I only made it through a few episodes before life got in the way. But back in November or December, I kept getting reels and tiktoks of the show, so I finally buckled down and watched it. And I've been obsessed ever since.

Listen.. I watch a lot of television. But very few shows completely entrap me to the point where I can't think of much else. Cobra Kai is one of those shows. I have now watched it twice- once on my own, before the final episodes dropped, then once with my fiance in the week leading up to the finale. And I'm already thinking of restarting it.

Growing up, I did watch the original Karate Kid once or twice, but it never really stuck with me. When it came to Ralph Macchio, I was definitely more of an Outsiders kid. Still am, really. But Cobra Kai has definitely made me fall in love with the Karate Kid movies.

I didn't rewatch the first one before I watched the show. And I had never even seen the other two. And Cobra Kai did an amazing job of making it unnecessary to fully know the source material to enjoy the show and still know what was going on. But when I watched the second time, my fiance watched the original trilogy. And rewatching the show afterwards, there were so many no-so-subtle nods to the trilogy that I just wouldn't have noticed otherwise.

Cobra Kai is honestly a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of show. It's easy to tell that the writers and show runners were huge fans of the original series. It manages to remain faithful to the source, while still maintaining it's own, unique identity. The cast, both older and younger, has phenomenal chemistry. Which makes sense. Two off-screen relationships, and Billy Zapka and Ralph Macchio have known each other for 40+ years.

Through this show, I've also fallen in love with the Lone Lobos podcast. If you don't know, Jacob Bertrand (Hawk) and Xolo Maridueña (Miguel) have their own podcast where they literally just bullshit for an hour at a time. It's really fun to see a peek behind the characters and learn what kind of people they are behind the scenes. They've also had several cast members on, and the friendships they all have are genuinely heartwarming.

Today, I'm just watching videos from the finale press tour, and thinking. I wish I had gotten into the show when it started. Or, at the very least, I wish I had continued it the first time I tried. Knowing that I'll never have the chance to wait in heavy anticipation for new episodes is depressing, but the way they wrapped the show up was absolutely beautiful. So, I want to take this time to offer a thank you to a whole section of people who will likely never see this.

To the cast and crew of Cobra Kai:

Thank you for offering a wonderful distraction from reality in one of the scariest times in my life. You all have given me new characters to fall in love with, new stories to think about, and maybe... Just maybe... New fanfiction ideas. 👀

So, I'll wrap this up. Cobra Kai has played a huge part in my life in just a short amount of time. And even though the show is over, there's one important thing to remember.

Cobra Kai Never Dies.

Some things aren’t supposed to last forever. A good meal goes by in twenty minutes, And then you’re left staring at the TV, Mindlessly fidgeting and maybe even wishing That your plate was full again. Most things aren’t supposed to last forever.  A great movie goes by in two, maybe three hours, And then you’re left sitting in silence, Letting credits roll, and maybe even wishing That you could watch it for the first time again. Most things aren’t going to last forever. School, good or bad, goes by in about thirteen years, And then you’re left, gazing into the unknown, Wondering where to go, and maybe even wishing That you could walk those halls again. Nothing is supposed to last forever. The best friendships can go by in the blink of an eye, And then you’re left with whiplash, Looking all around you and definitely wishing That they would come around again. Nothing is supposed to last forever. But “supposed to” is just a rule,  And rules are meant to be broken. A meal won’t last forever, And films have runtimes for a reason. School has served its purpose, And your story started a new season. But the thread between two friends, Spans longer than forever. It can be tugged, strained, or loosened on both ends. Yet it still survives the weather. And if that thread grows shorter, You should count your lucky stars, They have aligned in proper order, That they have shined on where you are. So enjoy all the things that last, But don’t cry if they fade. Some things are better in the past,  As memories that were made. And some things will come back around, Like Karma, so they say. They may be lost, but will be found, On a very happy day. I tell you all of this, my friend, Because change can be great.  This poem didn’t start with rhymes, But things can deviate.

To all the writers who are currently not writing:

Maybe you are focusing on your grades or your career right now. Maybe your mental illness is preventing you from writing like you used to. Maybe you’ve just had a baby and all your time and energy is going into caring for them. Maybe you are desperately looking for a job and that’s all you can focus on right now. Maybe you are caring for a sick or disabled family member. Maybe you just feel really burned out right now. Maybe, for whatever reason, you don’t have the time or energy or motivation to write right now. 

That’s okay.

If you still feel that you’re a writer, if you still want to be a writer, then you are still a writer!

We don’t have to write during any phase of our lives to be writers. Writing will always be there. It’s waiting patiently for your return. And it has a lot of patience. So even if it takes years, writing will still be there for you. You are still a writer.

Dungeon Thoughts

Just finished a session of DND, and I just gotta say something. For years, I've made the comments/jokes of me not having any friends. And yes. I was fully aware that I was incorrect, but being that they were all hundreds, if not thousands, of miles away, it always felt at least a little bit true. But, the real truth is, I've got a rock solid friend circle. These are people that I've known for years, people that I could come to for anything and everything, and I know that they would help. These are people that I would die for, and I don't say that lightly. I've positioned my entire work schedule so I can stay up as late as need be to play my TTRPGs with some of the best people in my life. It's the only thing I have to look forward to most of the time, and I'm genuinely upset when something happens and we can't play. They'll likely never see this, and I'm okay with that, but I want to put it out into the universe: To my DND crew, I love you all. I wish you all the best in life. Thank you for making my weeks better just by being there. Thank you for igniting a passion in me 7 years ago that I never even knew I wanted, let alone needed. And thank you for being the rowdiest, most chaotic neutral bunch of crackheads I've met in my life. To anybody who may read this: If you haven't played DND, or any other tabletop, I highly suggest you give it a shot. Not only does it give you a chance to play pretend with other likeminded individuals, but it can teach you more about yourself than you could know. And it can give you a group of lifelong friends that you'll understand on a level that nobody else ever will. -GVJ

Tiny Glowing Screens

Between the debate yesterday, and a conversation with my best friend today, I've been thinking about the state of the world today. I've come to what I feel is a safe conclusion. See, we live in a world where a reality show host can convince half the country that immigrants are habitually eating pets. And on top of that, I've realized that I rely too much on technology. DVD collection is so out of date, and now I'm realizing that perhaps having every one of my favorite movies and tv shows one click away may be one of the scariest things I've every thought about. It could all go away in the time it takes an exec to have a temper tantrum and remove it, and then where would I be. "No frozen dinners, and no TV, and is that a world [I] want to text in?" No, I don't think it is. -GVJ
