I won’t belabor all the reasons why the 2020 live-action Mulan was a shitshow, but I will point out one relevant to this gifset: the removal of the scenes with her male comrades cross-dressing as part of their operation to rescue the emperor.

Most attention on the 1998 movie’s gender commentary is understandably about Mulan’s relationship with masculinity, how much of masculine norms she can perform, and how she uses her wits to make up for whatever she cannot perform.

But tends to go remarked upon far less often is that it’s not just her embracing traits from the opposite gender to achieve her goals. When the squad needs to infiltrate the palace, they embrace femininity and feminine traits and feminine guile to do so.

This is one of the many, many ways that the movie makes a point to show that femininity has power and agency and inherent value, too, even in a context that ostensibly (and depending on your worldview, necessarily) over-prioritizes masculine traits. Appreciation for what embracing the opposite gender for yourself was mutual.

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.

Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.

So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.

Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.

“I want to speak to a manager,” the middle-aged woman said in her stern I-used-to-be-a-soccer-mom-ten-years-ago voice, looking down at me over the top of her Gucci reading glasses.

A wicked grin split across my face and the gates of Hell opened up behind me, releasing a gust of hot wind that whipped my apron around my body and forced the woman to shield her face. Demons came forth, dancing around in flames with songs of, “She wants to speak to a manager. Did you hear that? She wants to speak to a manager!” before erupting into earsplitting shrieks of laughter, none louder than my own cackling.

I took in the woman’s look of utter horror before my eyes rolled back into my head and I growled,

“I am the manager.”
