Reasons for hope: Lots of amazing people did a ton of work to make this fantastic, fully interactive resource available - because no matter how bleak things seem, there are millions, and millions of people doing everything they can to protect both the world and their own communities.
You can use this to view and subscribe to updates, project statuses, and for at least some of them even whole dossiers. This is an amazing resource, I highly recommend checking it out

Why do so many Japanese urban legends seem to involve a dialogue tree that you need to follow very carefully?
It's just the interactive element that seems characteristic. Like I hear a claim that, at some point, "everyone dreams of a village littered with blue corpses, and if they trip and fall then they will die in their sleep and become one of them" and ai just immediately know before I even check that, yes, this urban legend originated in Japan.

According to Wikipedia, that could actually work according to some versions of the legend

Well time to find a new VPN provider.
Article is paywalled which buries Proton's response. Other articles summarize, but the clearest story is in their response to an email request for comment (emphasis mine):
"First, Proton did not provide any information to the FBI. The data was obtained by the Swiss Federal Department of Justice through a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) process. Proton operates exclusively under Swiss law and only responds to legally binding orders from Swiss authorities, after all Swiss legal checks have been passed. This is clearly stated in our TOS and Privacy Policy.
In this specific case, Swiss authorities determined that the legal bar was met because a law enforcement officer had been shot, and explosive devices were involved during an incident in 2024. Switzerland has one of the strictest privacy frameworks in the world, and legal assistance is only granted in cases involving serious criminal matters.
Importantly, the only information that could be disclosed was a payment identifier because the user chose to pay by credit card although Proton accepts gift cards, cryptocurrency and cash. No emails, no message content, and no communications metadata were handed over. This actually demonstrates how little data Proton holds by design, our end-to-end encryption means we cannot access email content even if ordered to."
This is the third known time Proton provided user metadata after the Swiss government was pressured by other countries.
The truth is that no privacy-oriented tool guarantees 100% anonymity, because they still operate within a legal framework.
You're free to look for another VPN provider, but you need to employ tight operational security measures if you want better protection—The service alone is not enough.
After the French climate protesters were identified via the cleartext parts of their communications on Proton (portions of the communications that could not be obscured as a function of SMTP, this is simply a part of how email works, not something that Proton can change) and the account creation details that Proton was compelled to produce (and that changed their log storage policy), Proton made a point of publishing articles that gave very explicit instructions on how to use their services as anonymously as possible and also made the information that they store much more visible to users.
If you want to find another VPN provider and you want that provider to be as private as possible, Privacy Guides has a good analysis of which providers are a good option (note that Proton is one of their three recommended VPNs) and provides information on anonymous payment methods available for each option.
The lesson to take from this is not "Proton won't protect your privacy" it's "assume the FBI will be able to identify every payment you've made with your credit card," which. I mean. C'mon that should be the baseline assumption and is part of why Proton allows you to pay for your account by literally mailing them cash in an envelope.
