January Week 1: Getting Started
Welcome to the 2019 Grimoire Challenge!
Alright, witches! To kick things off the theme for this weeks prompt is simple. Get yourself prepared. Collect whatever materials you will be using for your Grimoire. Is it parchment paper or notebook paper? Are you filling in a journal, a binder or keeping loose pages? Prepare all of these things.
Choose your format! Will it be similar to mine, very scrapbook like? Or will yours be neat and orderly pages, lists, numbered and the like? Will all the pages share an exact format? Or will they be similar? Perhaps entirely random?
For those who like daily activities, there will be a portion of each week’s prompt set aside for five days of each week, with occasional bonus prompts and activities on some Saturdays. For this week, we’ll break it down as such, though you are not required to separate all of these into each day. If you’re up to it, do them all on the same day!
Monday: Naming your book
You don’t need to name your Grimoire, but to keep it more personal you can. Mine, for instance, is simply titled “The Basil Grimoire” and believe me, it took a long list and several days of throwing ideas around to find the perfect title. Choose a name that encompass what your craft is, how you will be using your book, and what you will be using it for. Will it be more encyclopedic? Or a step-by-step guide to things?
Tuesday: Dedication/ Statement of Intent/ Book Blessing (New Page!)
Now, this part is also optional. Not everyone worships deities, not everyone needs to state their intent in written form, and not everyone chooses to bless or protect their book. Personally, I did something akin to all of these in one long poem at the beginning of my book. Are you dedicating your practice to a deity? If so, state it. What is the intent behind making this book? What is its use? outline this. And if you are blessing your book, or protecting it, write this out here as well.
Wednesday: Outline/ Index (New Page!)
This one is likely to change and grow as the challenge goes on. But here is where we will make a list (you should use pencil or type it up on the computer so it is easy to change and edit) of the things we will be putting in your Grimoire. What are the things you personally hope to learn more about? What are the subjects you wish your book to hold and encompass? Is there a specific order you wish your book to be in? How to’s up front, correspondences and lists at the end? Or divided by type of magic?
Thursday: Organize your resources!
Don’t let my paltry list of resources be your only sources for completing the challenge. They’re just a start. Google is your friend. The library is your friend. Researching is your friend. If you’re using a computer (which I am assuming we all are, since you know, we’re on Tumblr) create a bookmark folder with your resources for research in it. If you’re writing in a certain script, make sure you have an image or example of it and keep it handy until you’re more familiar with it. What good would it do to write in runes if you can’t easily read it afterwards?
Friday: Begin! (New page!)
So to break the tedium of the start of the project, we’ll do our first research task! Choose an herb you’re curious about learning more about. For example, Basil. Search its scientific name, where it grows, how it grows, when it grows. What are its correspondences and associations? What does it correspond with to you? What do you feel from the herb? What are its practical uses and magical uses?
There it is my witchy friends! The start of our challenge and the onset of our project! If you feel like sharing your covers/ titles/ images of your book, submissions are open for the entirety of the project. I look forward to receiving feedback, images, and thoughts from all of you!
Happy Crafting!
M.G.

Hello! Can I have a reading about A in my future romantically speaking? We have a long distance relationship and want to live in the same city someday. Thank you!
Honestly, I don’t know how else to interpret this except to say that I think your relationship with A is moving in a very stead direction, with living together a pretty solid option. The 6 of Vessels is a card of child-like happiness and strong senses of family. The 10 of Stones is about building a home, a life, that is grounded and sturdy. A card of attainment and culmination. And the World is another card of completion and finality. I just get a strong sense of a happy home when it comes to you and your partner.
Hello! Could I have a tarot reading? Advice for my love life would be great! Thank you in advance! - B.C 🌼
Hi, and sorry for the delay.
I see two ways this reading can be interpreted.
The first is a gentle reminder to prioritize self-love over romantic love. The High Priestess reminds us that we are more complex than we know, and that with time and practice, we can come to know ourselves so much more deeply than we ever thought. The four of vessels reminds us of the importance of boundaries and self-care, of shutting out those around us that may take our emotional energy from us and deplete us. And the World suggests you have everything you need already. That romantic love of others won’t necessarily add to a life that may already be full of love in other ways (self-love, platonic love, familial love, etc.).
The second way to interpret this is that the person you may become romantic with could already be in your life. Is there someone you’ve been getting vibes from, or who you’ve been curious about? Trust your gut--it often knows things before our brains do. That four of vessels also tells you to open your eyes and look around you. Oftentimes, what we seek is already present, if only we’d stop stubbornly looking in the wrong direction or focusing on the wrong things. And the World suggests that when you trust your intuition and take a better look at the people around you, you may just find exactly what you’ve been looking for.
The new year can bring a lot of fear and anxiety for many of us. This is how the Fear Of The New Year Tarot spread came to be. If you use my spread, feel free to tag me. I’d love to see it.
