On KyoAni

For those of you who don’t know much about anime studios or the industry in general, please be aware that Kyoto Animation’s business model is built largely on the ethical treatment of its workers.  I saw a well-meaning comment earlier about how underpaid and overworked animators didn’t deserve this tragedy, and while that’s certainly true, working conditions at KyoAni are basically the gold standard of the animation industry.

Animators at KyoAni are salaried workers, not freelancers, and the studio only produces a handful of series and/or feature films a year.  Their viewership and DVD sales are incredibly high because of the quality and care put into each product.  They’ve been called “the Pixar of the anime industry” in the past — a nickname that is perhaps undeserved now, knowing how liberally KyoAni cultivates female talent by comparison.  Simply put, KyoAni is a far cry from the “sweatshop” image we associate with non-Western animation studios, and the general public should know and respect that.

I say this not because an attack on any other studio or group would be any less tragic, but because the people at KyoAni need support right now.  The official donation link is https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-kyoani-heal; but, even if you can’t donate, just know that this is a horrific blow to a company that values its workers in an industry where staff is often considered expendable.
