recent twitter commission for the DM of a Pathfinder 2e game set in the Mwangi Expanse, a region inspired by sub-saharan African geography and cultures. This character is a friendly glassmaking and blacksmithing gnoll NPC named Stoat! The commissioner let me decide which hyena species she’d look like– I chose to make her a striped gnoll, mostly because I wanted to do her hair. Her cloak pattern is inspired by kitenge fabric.
I've been made aware that it is Tired Beast Thursday, so here is Sweet Pea the gnoll, my tired beast. She's just fine, she's sleeping on the floor because the bed is too soft-- and her goblin friend Nettle isn't complaining, because now she gets the whole big person sized bed to herself.
(an older drawing, with the ask that inspired it, but I can't find my original post, alas)
Oohhhh, big yawn!
It's cute and normal for a girl to have spidery fangs and sharp monstery teeth! Thank you to everyone drawing and writing Hornet with freaky mouthparts, it's inspiring.
[ID: A short Silksong comic about Hornet and the fleas, done in pen and watercolor. Hornet sits on a bench in the flea caravan, reading her map as a cluster of fleas flies around her. Her face screws up as she yawns, her fanged mouth hidden below her mask opening up. The fleas around her draw nearer and then bark as she exhales, slightly startled. As Hornet drifts off to sleep, they land around and on her. /End ID]
Varishkava! I adored the flea caravan from the moment I met them--they're a cheerful light in a dark world. Way before I knew anything about Act III, I could imagine them inviting their new warrior friend to set down her weapon and enjoy their company and hospitality awhile before rushing off again on her quest.
And feeling inspired by the bug food other people have come up with in art and fics, I had to draw some, too. Everything here is made with blood--they're fleas!--and I think they'd mostly eat foods that keep well for traveling, with fresh-made foods as more of a special thing.
(also these drawings are set pre-Kratt because he'd spoil the vibe)

Do you have any thoughts of the Ajaba form werewolf the apocalypse?
I’ve never played Werewolf The Apocalypse or heard of the Ajaba, so I didn’t have any thoughts before now! But I’ve found their article on the White Wolf fandom wiki, and it says they’re werehyenas who are supposed to be the African continent’s counterpart to werewolves, so that’s kind of cool? Also I’m assuming “The Simba” are werelions? Werewolves actually have never really been my thing, I think they’re sort of boring as a monster, but it is neat when games and stories explore the potential of more kinds of were-creatures.
It does seem like the Ajaba lore has them as notably more vicious and given to infighting than European werewolf society, which… 😬 like, sure, hyenas-the-animal can sometimes be more intense than wolves, but it’s maybe not the best look to be like, “these Africans who transform into monsters are more chaotic and violent than these Europeans who transform into monsters.” But thats just my initial impression of how the wiki phrases things.
Some more facts about the Ajaba specificallly; apparently the person behind a lot of their lore was specifically someone who REALLY hated the demonization of hyeneas, especially in the Lion King. This in part why the Simba werelions have a general bad reputation in their sourcebook, as they take the real life behavior of lions and anthropomorphize it a bit; in general the real life tendency of hyenas and lions to come into conflict over similar prey is represented by a long standing rivalry between the Ajaba and Simba.
(On a related note, the werecats, or Bastet, come in several tribes inspired both by the human cultures of the regions they come from, and are divided by the cats they transform into. These include the Balam werejaguars, the Khan weretigers, mountain lion Pumonca, Qualmi werelynxes, leopard Bagheera, Swara werecheetahs, and the Caelican fairy-cats, who have a close link to the fae and descend from the British isles.
The Ajaba, in reference to hyenas being related to felines, were originally treated as an ostracized Bastet tribe, though in recent editions that has been changed to them being their own thing. Due to the Garou werewolves, being the warriors meant to fight corruption and evil, not having much of a presence in the African continent the Ajaba MIGHT be meant to fulfill that role instead.)
Overwhelmingly, the Ajaba are depicted as victims of Simba aggression; the Simba at the time had a prominent member named Black Tooth, a genocidal purist who intended to kill his way to dominance and restart an ancient method of putting humanity in check by systematically killing them, and who organized a great deal of supporters and began a genocidal campagin against the Ajaba, scattering them across the world to survive.
The Ajaba were depicted as ominous, dangerous and homicidally vengeful in that same sourcebook, but it was very clearly a result of abuse, desperation and extreme fear; the narrator of the Ajaba section of the book is a wise matriarch who is written as being reasonable.
Things improved for them; in the metaplot at the time, the Ajaba brokered an alliance with the other shapeshifters of the region, including many who opposed Black Tooth for personal or pragmatic reasons, including many Simba who were repulsed at the outright attempted genocide of the Ajaba, Bagheera seeking to dispense justice, and others who just went 'yo, what the fuck'. This created a grand alliance that successfully slew Black Tooth, and against the usual tendency in the setting for alliances to dissolve into squabbling and rivalry, remained a powerful faction fighting the forces of corruption and hatred in the region, and have gone a LONG way in resolving many of the ancient disputes and cycles of revenge between their respective peoples.
Of note, the Ajaba have a newly awakened respect for the Mokole, shapeshifters who generally take the forms of large reptiles like crocodiles, but who carry a chain of ancestral memory that goes back all the way to the days of the dinosaurs: they literally dream their war form from memories of dinosaurs and dragons, and are closely associated with dragons to the point that their patron spirit is Dragon himself. Despite being so powerful and terrifying, the Mokole are a very relaxed and easy going people who mostly advise others (and are HORRRIBLY prone to a form of supernatural depression, as remembering the terrible tragedies of history fills them with despair) and were extremely influential in slaying Black Tooth, as such the Ajaba hold them in very high regard.
This is feeding ducks bread all over again.
I know this is tempting but please don't feed immolationdeer gasoline; the refined hydrocarbons aren't good for them in a metabolic sense and this can really mess them up. Also if they're getting all the refined hydrocarbons they want, they're not eating resinous (mostly coniferous) deadwood off the forest floor and in suburban areas that can meaningfully contribute to wildfires over time. If you really must hand feed immolationdeer in your area because they're so cute and so sweet and you want pictures of you handfeeding wildlife like a Disney princess, consider carrying around fatwood twigs , natural pine resin chunks, or even just paraffin and sawdust based fire starters. These are much closer to their natural diet while still being rich enough to count as treats, and provide much more nutrition.

I badly want to start saying “this is my Swarovski Shrek” to refer to any outrageously expensive yet ridiculous object I start coveting. If anyone says “what the fuck” and asks what I mean, well. It’s their lucky day to learn about Swarovski Shrek
Guess who I saw today
WHAT THE HELL THERE'S SO MANY??
I've been playing Silksong and my love for Hornet burns brighter day by day. She'll meet a stranger on the road, politely introduce herself, and tell them gravely and sincerely that she's concerned for their safety in this dangerous land, and that she hopes they keep well. And then she'll take out a fantasy 4Loko from under her cloak, chug the whole thing, crush the can against her forehead, and fling herself off of a cliff into the subterranean lair of Mother Fucker Unlimited, a monster six times her size, slaughter him and a dozen of his most annoying friends, black out, wake up an hour later on the cold ground, drag herself back up onto her feet, and do it all again.
current state of the internet is a FUCKING EMBARASSMENT. was chatting with my grandma bout the history of crochet and knitting (and the comparative ages of those respective technologies) and i was like "oh YEAH and also that ancient greek fiber art we partly figured out from chemically testing the scoured bleached pigments of stolen statuary (tumblr knows what im talking about)—gimme 30 seconds to look up the name."
5 minutes and 3 search-engines later i am crying tears of blood screaming spitting blubbering in despair as my grandma attempts to digitally pat me consolingly on the back. the library of alexandria didn't burn it was "restructured" to "increase shareholder profits"
and i STILL CANNOT FIND THE TERM.
i am scouring the internet like the victorians scoured and destroyed all trace of joy and color from stolen relics for the LOST NAME OF THE ANCIENT PROCESS of textile-creation akin to knitting/crocheting/nålebinding that at least one academic/crafter used to recreate the leggings on this Glorious Motherfucker:
the google execs erased it. they bleached my bestie AGAIN from history...

Book 1: Cliath
In 1992, White Wolf Publishing released the first edition of Werewolf: the Apocalypse to the public. Throughout the 1990s, it rapidly grew to become one of the most played role-playing games of all time, and this persisted well into the noughties when the series concluded with the Revised (3rd) edition.
Its a game that speaks to the core fears many of us hold about the uncertainty of the future. Of corporations harming the world to meet their profit margins, of everyday people whose homes and lives are destroyed by disasters caused by those corporations or by storms that wouldn't have been so severe even a decade before. Of politicians who sell agencies to those who pay them the most to make the most vulnerable groups in society even more vulnerable. Of people who don't even have that. It looks you all in the eyes and asks you to be enraged. It asks you to care while handing you the tools to do something about it. Then, you get to work. You don't just blow up the factories; you empower the little guy, heal communities, and confront the stagnant society that you've become a part of, and you have to be responsible custodians of the greater world around you while not trying to be consumed by the very darkness you fight against. It was as intense as it was touching, heartbreaking, and entertaining. At times its just as absurd (and nuanced) as real life.
It was revolutionary at the time for the space it held at the tabletop. Werewolf was the first tabletop roleplaying game ever made that defaulted to using feminine pronouns in all Player and Storyteller interactions, as well as the default pronouns of the Garou in its first three editions. For its many flaws, it saw itself as the first tabletop roleplaying game that held any space for Indigenous groups. It made activism a core theme of the game itself, and would conclude its books with a list of related real-world demonstrations where the players can get involved in protecting the world around them, just like the werewolves they represent at the tabletop.
The Garou have intricate and multi-layered cultures from their written language to their oral histories, the way they dress, and the ways they manifest across editions were presented with very little overlap when it comes to the multiple facets across their society, leading to a rich history and complex societies for Storytellers to weave chronicles together for their troupes.
Dark Surrealism Awaits
The World of Darkness is implied to exist just beneath a facade that all others take for granted as simply being a world gone wrong. Can you feel it? In a world of burning forests, flash floods, social inequality and seemingly worse things emerging day after day — a world where everything feels wrong and nothing in the world feels right — you are not alone.
The universe is itself a living organism, thrashing like a panicked animal at the biting darkness, and we, the Gaians, are those who join the fight to protect it. You are one of Gaia’s chosen warriors, about to experience your First Change, and become swept into a world of ancient warriors and sacred purpose.
We monsters ask nothing of you—other than to join us.
