My first ever crochet project: a checkerboard granny square cardigan! I am so incredibly proud of this piece! I was able to make it in 3 weeks, cobbling together different patterns and tutorials to make my own cardigan. It was so much fun!

This isn't technically my first crochet piece ever... I used to be into crochet a bit when I was a kid. My granny taught me when I was quite young, but I never quite got out of the granny square stage. I made a few dish cloths for my mom, some purposeless stuffed shapes that weren't quite big enough to be pillows, and a lot of really long chains that I would use as fishing lines when playing "fishing" with my grandparents (where we would put them over the stairway balcony, and the person on the other end would attach "fish" aka any random object to them. I used to love that as a kid). But that was as far as I ever made it on my crochet journey. It quickly became another forgotten hobby along with so many others. I never made a real project.

Fast forward 15 or so years (I'm guessing here, I don't really remember how old I was when I first attempted crochet), and here we are! I hadn't touched a crochet hook in over a decade, but for some reason, got hit with a random spark of inspiration that I needed to start immediately. I got this idea 1 week into a 3 week vacation, so I spent 2 weeks just watching tutorials and accumulating a Pinterest board (while I was not doing vacation things, that is). When I got home I immediately bought yarn, and my lovely boyfriend bought me some hooks, and I got right into it.

The granny square cardigan was such a great place to begin. It was fairly straight forward, and the repetition of making exactly 69 squares for the cardigan meant I could do it while watching TV (I watched many many episodes of Fantasy High while making this) or even during dnd sessions. For the most part, it worked up very quickly. I was only dreading sewing the squares together because everyone online complains about that part, but that ended up being on of my favourite parts! I found it so enjoyable and satisfying to see my work come together! The only issue I encountered was with the bottom ribbing, which I did wrong the first time and essentially did double the stitches I needed, making it look almost like a ruffle. I had to frog about 6 hours of work, but I'm so glad I did because I love the end result.

I am having so much fun with my new hobby! I've already made a second top, and have started making more granny squares for a skirt! I've drawn out so many ideas, and I now forsee a yarn related debt in my future.

I'm making my first ever crochet project right now (a granny square cardigan!) and it's finally happened... I have to frog it 🥲🐸 I messed up the stitch counting on the bottom ribbing that I spent about 6 hours on, and I now have the painful task of taking it apart. I'm just gonna pretend that this is a right of passage, and I am a real crocheter now 🙃 I love picking up new hobbies, it is fun and relaxing *I say as my left eye violently twitches and my hands are shaking*
