She looked at the pictures with a great smile, listening carefully to Roy; a surprised expression came on her face when he talked about meeting Jack, then she kindly answered “I’d really like to meet Jack, he seems so nice!”

Roy’s last question brought her into the past, when she lived with her parents “When I was younger I used to take care of our family friends’ pets, so I lived in contact with a lot of animals, but I never adopted one. Maybe when I’ll go back home I’ll adopt a cat or a dog…Since I’m alone now.”

Roy smiled sadly, thinking back to his own childhood with his share of beloved dogs. “ If you’re looking for companionship,” he chuckled, “dogs are so great that way. Always at your side, no matter what. Of course, that’s my biased opinion anyways.” Something also occurred to the man however, he considered the fact of his new friend having to leave. Growing more solemn, he decided to inquire about it. “Do you know when you have to leave?”

That was an interesting question, a key to enter her mysterious world and let her insecurity slowly fade away. “I…Don’t know, actually! Maybe both…Dogs are loyal, smart, kind…They sort of represent our idea of good. But I think cats are amazing too; you have to win their trust, be patient and respect them. Both dogs and cats can love without limits, they just have different ways to express their feelings.” After her answer, she focused on Roy’s dog. “I would like you to tell me something about Jack…If you don’t mind. I love when people talk about their pet.”

Roy grinned, immediately reaching into the side drawer beside his bed and pulling out his photo roll, which had pictures of he and his girlfriend (which he soon planned to dispose of), though mostly of dear loyal Jack. Handing her one of the pictures, he began to talk, his voice full of excitement, “Well I got him when he was a tiny, tiny little puppy, that was a few years ago. But now he’s fully grown, he’s still somewhat of a runt, however.” Reaching into the photo roll, he pulled out several more of the little dog. “He’s such a good dog, loyal and always happy to see people... perhaps I can bring him in one day and you can meet him!” Pausing to glance over curiously at the girl, he decided to ask her the same. “Do you have any pets?”

The girl thought about the answer and put it into words “It was the first time out of my room after three weeks, I was bored and curious. Also, every time I see a cat, or a dog, I try to get closer. You can never know what may happen, sometimes it seems like they can lead you somewhere, just think about what happened yesterday…I guess we’re both grateful to that cat. Humans think they’re special and important, but they always forget about every living creature in this word.”

Ailis smiled while looking into Roy’s eyes “It looks like you don’t like cats, do you?”

Roy listened to Ailis intently, enjoying her insight. Upon noting her observation, he chuckled. “I’m more of a dog person honestly,” he admitted. “Have one of my own, his name is Jack.” Roy thought to the tiny jack russell terrier, currently being cared for by one of his neighbors, he dearly missed the little dog. “I have always felt dogs are more honest with their feelings about you, cats are mystery, sometimes you think they like you, other times they completely ignore you... What about you? Cat or dog person?”

She was quite confused. If that man was telling the truth, then she wasn’t alone as she thought. Was it possible? 

Ailis came back and sat again “I can stay if you want. I’m glad you understand what I’m feeling…But we shouldn’t waste our time crying, why don’t we talk about something happier?” She didn’t want to hurt Roy with her story, so she tried to distract him.

Roy nodded, moving his gaze to a cup on the other and pulling his hand back. “You’re right.” He agreed, shifting to glance back at her. “Why don’t we walk about... Oh I don’t know... what was that cat like that you were following so keenly?” He inquired. Though more of a dog person admittedly, the cat that wandered the hospital had always captured his interest, though he could never get it to come to his bed.

Ailis found a chair near Roy’s bed, probably left there by another guest, so she sat and tried to say something.

“So…As you probably thought looking at my bandages, I tried to kill myself” She started looking down and away from Roy’s face “And I’m so ashamed of myself…” Ailis took a break, then spoke again “I did this after my mother’s death…Because I was afraid of being alone in a world where everyone is left behind. People think I’m insane. No one knows my story, but everybody is judging me for what I did.” After another break, she asked “Am I annoying you? Maybe I shouldn’t have come here, I’m sorry”

After she started explaining, Roy’s smile fell, he had been there, he had done almost exactly that. After she broke, he quickly rushed to console her, “No, no you’re not I just,” he paused for a moment, feeling like he was about to start crying. “I almost... I almost did the same thing...” Why was he telling her? He had literally just met her for crying out loud! But something told Roy it was alright that he was telling her this, he didn't know what, but he trusted it. “I’m so sorry,” he looked up at her, reaching out to touch her hand. “Please don’t go, Ailis.”

That was an unexpected answer, like a ray of sunshine after a storm. Finally someone was willing to listen to her story and maybe understand her feelings. “Thank you” She smiled at him, and slowly returned to her room.

The day after, Ailis woke up early and waited a while before leaving her room.

As soon as she could, the girl moved to Roy’s room, hoping he was awake. “Good morning…” She patiently waited an answer, standing close to the wall and its shadow.

Roy looked up from counting the threads on his blanket, relieved the girl has come and stopped him from completely boring himself. Setting down the blanket, he craned his neck, “Good morning,” he chirped. “Come in, come in!” Roy gestured into his room, excited to hear what she had to say.

She unintentionally let him see the bandage on her wrist while stretching her arm to take the glass of water, which she gently handed to Roy, pretending he saw nothing.

She was focusing on her past now, watching with a sad gaze some children playing outside.

“Thank you,” Roy replied, taking hold of the glass. He took note of the her bandaged wrist as he took a sip of the water. Setting the glass in his lap he smiled up at her, “So you gonna tell me what happened to you?”

She hesitated a while, then she answered “Ah, it’s not a great story. it’s so long and boring."  Ailis remembered that she should have been in her room and maybe someone was looking for her now, so she tried to find a way to meet Roy again. But how? She was too shy to ask him something like that.  Suddenly, Ailis held her breath and blushed again "Maybe I can tell it to you tomorrow…?”

A small smile grew across Roy’s face, he had a feeling about what she was doing, though he enjoyed her company. Her just being here for a few moments made his dull and colorless days all the better. “Of course,” he said, taking another sip of water. “I look forward to hearing about it.”
