A lot of liberals / leftists on Tumblr are able to grasp that it’s not okay to resort to bigotry to insult oppressed people no matter how problematic they’re being. They know it’s not okay to use racist slurs against Ben Carson even though he said homophobic shit, and it wouldn’t be okay to use homophobic language to insult Perez Hilton or Jeffrey Star despite their racism and problematic behavior. The reason it’s not okay is because, as I hope you realize, it’s attacking their marginalization instead of their problematic behavior, and attacking their marginalization makes you the ignorant bigot instead of appropriately targeting their bigoted behavior where the real problem is. Attacking their marginalization leads to regression, targeting the problematic behavior leads to progress.

But for some reason this stops at women and people aren’t able to grasp that it’s not okay to resort to misogyny to insult women even if they’re being problematic or bigoted. If a woman is bigoted or problematic, you’ll see especially men resort to misogynistic slurs or misogynistic insults against these women. The fucked up thing is most of the time these same men understand they shouldn’t use racism to insult problematic PoC or homophobia/transphobia to insult problematic members of the LBGT+ community but just cannot fucking get that it applies to women too. Women are still fair game to use misogyny against if they’re being problematic or bigoted apparently, and that’s a problem that needs to stop.

I think it’s partly because casual misogyny is so normalized that people don’t realize it’s misogyny. Like people know that racial and homophobic slurs are racist and homophobic. But when I tell someone they shouldn’t call a woman an “uptight bitch” or “hysterical” and shouldn’t make fun of her weight / age / body hair / general physical appearance, I’m told “the problem with modern feminists is they see sexism everywhere” (… maybe it’s because it is everywhere but whatever). Like I don’t know how it is in English-speaking countries but where I live (and I surround myself with mostly liberals), misogynistic slurs are just super common and brushed off as just any other insult even when they’re very obviously gendered.

Even a lot of people who identify as feminist or support the feminist movement aren’t able to recognize a lot of forms of misogyny, including misogynistic slurs, attacking a woman’s appearance if you don’t like her or agree with her, or how many cases of femicide and sexual assault could and should qualify as hate crimes against women. No wonder so many leftists don’t take misogyny seriously and think it’s a “lesser” form of oppression, misogyny is so normalized people just don’t recognize it.

Actually studies show that people who live in places with universal income (who are given money with no strings attached just for being citizens) do far better work than those who don’t and are more enthusiastic to do work.

This is because they still want nice things and will work for those but the part of their energy that was devoted to worrying about if they have enough money to pay the rent and bills this month is now freed up to do other things.

Some people will always be lazy and take advantage of the system, but they are always a tiny percentage and it seems ridiculous to me to punish the majority and severly hamstring their abilities just because a handful of people will simply live of basic income rather than work.

It’s been tested a couple times. In Canada, in some European countries, and the results are always the same. There are two groups of people who show a statistically significant (Greater than one half of one percent, or 1 in 200) increase in Not Working and living off the guaranteed income. Parents of Children under school age, and full time students. Among ALL other groups, employment actually INCREASED. Why? Because guaranteed minimum income means that homeless people can get at least a basic low end apartment. It’s hard if not impossible to get an above board job without a permanent fixed address. Also more people were able to have and maintain a BANK ACCOUNT. It is often hard to get a decent job without an account that can accept Direct Deposit for paychecks. Also, lost work time due to illness and injury decreased across the board. It turns out if people are getting a decent amount of money each month they can A> afford to eat better, and B> obtain decent medical attention both preventative and emergency. Crazy right? So why hasn’t it caught on? Because it doesn’t directly benefit the people in power, and it increases THEIR PERSONAL taxes, their CORPORATE TAXES, and thus decreases their PERSONAL INCOME. So, because Jeff Bezos and Alan Greenspan might fall from making 100 billion dollars a year to making 99.8 billion dollars a year, it’s a hard NO and we can all fucking die.. The End.

last year when i was teaching 11th grade one of my fav students came in crying so i put the class on a filler activity and we just talked. they were doing ICE raids in the city and she was worried her parents wouldnt be there when she got home. then she was worried that ICE may come to the school and take her. we looked the laws up together and printed it out so she could carry the papers with her. 

it is illegal for ICE to raid a school and take children. ILLEGAL. i told my student (and eventually the class in like a blanket statement because i had quite a few undocumented students) that if anyone did come i would put my body between ICE and my students and really struggle. honestly my heart broke so much that day - take care of undocumented people in your life because they deserve so much better than this ffs. this woman is so very evil and has a black heart and i hope she rots in prison
