side note, the guy in the photo and the guy who led the team that grew/described this absolute Unit is named Carlos Magdelena, hes a horticulturalist at the KEW who specializes in lily pads and is also known for being the guy who figured out how to grow the smallest lily pad species on earth, Nymphaea thermarum, from seed. it’s a species that’s now extinct in the wild and was brought to the KEW to keep it from all-out extinction, which it had an INCREDIBLY close brush with like, multiple times (it was native only to a single tiny hot spring in Rwanda that got drained from agricultural use).

here’s a picture of him holding it on top of the largest water lily in the world at the time of this photo, Victoria amazonica, which we now know is actually the second largest next to this new one, which is a close relative!

he also wrote a book of some of his stories of saving plants from extinction at the KEW called ‘the plant messiah’, which includes the story of N. thermarum. really cool non-academic read about rare plants and conservation, i need to reread it sometime!

Once upon a time I worked in this little burger/coffee/ice cream shop and a lady came in one winter and asked if we had a caramel apple drink and we were like ‘well we have cider’ and she was like ‘no I don’t remember what it’s called but this place made a drink that was chai tea, apple cider, and caramel’ and Breezy offered to try and make something for her but she changed her mind and left so Breezy and I were like ‘alright let’s try this’ because we had chai tea, instant cider mix, a shit ton of caramel, instant hot water from the espresso and too much free time. 

And let me tell you it was delightful. It tastes like watching the leaves changing color and dancing in the wind. It tastes like picking out pumpkins and gourds and fresh apples at the farm up north. It tastes like witches and freedom.

I make it every year now and this year I walked in the house on the morning of October first with all the ingredients and shouted ‘FALL DRINK’ and my roommates were like ‘????’ so I made them Fall Drink and now every time they get home from work they’re like ‘Fall Drink pls?????’

Anyway I remember literally nothing else about that woman but I’m very grateful to her.

My friend, you have essentially backward engineered a wonderful winter drink from the Stuart period.

White sack wine, cider, spices (clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, ginger) tea, sugar, and if you want it authentic, a bit of cream or whipped egg. All this is brought together in a low temperature and then stewed for a time. It can also be “pulled”, a process in which one “stirs” the concoction by using a ladle and pouring it repeatedly from high in the air. Makes it foamy and frothy. 

Serve warm.

On a cold night, this is a delightful thing. Believe it or not, we also used to make it with a stout beer instead of wine. For a darker richer flavor.

One Black Tea Bag, One Cup Apple Juice, 2tsp butter, 2tsp brown sugar, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger to taste will also accomplish something similar (just melt the butter and brown sugar together and whisk them around a pan a bit - don’t bother making proper caramel) Make your faux-caramel then you add the apple juice and then the rest; heat it up to a boil then turn off the heat, drop the tea bag in and let it steep for 3 minutes, serve with gingersnaps.

The world of academia is considered highly male centric despite that the aesthetic seems to be dominated by young queer women. I am not a fan of Donna Tartt so I have collected alternatives from my own collection of books and a few from friends and family. Some of the books may not be exactly “dark academia” or a set academic aesthetic but they all address female experiences and are academically acclaimed.

Mental health awareness culture can do better

It’s not enough. There seems to be a focus on common mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, OCD and the like. Meanwhile I’m over here as a schizotype living with a constant risk of being fucking demonized dare I open up about my severe mental illness.

Psychotics aren’t these freaks of nature society paints us out to be. When I tell people about my diagnosis a typical response is “are you sure? You seem pretty normal to me.” That’s because we are normal. We’re just different. And the fact that I get that question is a sign that being sensitive to mental illness hardly extends to the schizo spectrum.

If substantial progress is to be made with normalizing mental illness, start with the illnesses that create the stigma in the first place.

Because as schizo specs, we are the most segregated group of mental illness sufferers from society as a whole. Common mental illnesses are better understood and accepted. As someone with schizotypal personality disorder, I almost feel like an outcast among mental health awareness advocates.

Seriously. It pisses me off. I feel like little has been done to normalize psychosis, which is the very spectrum that causes the stigma to begin with.

Normalize accepting psychotics.

say it with me: every body is beautiful. every skin tone is divine. disabilities, skin conditions, disfigurement or scars do not reduce the value of a person. mental illness does not invalidate individual experiences. sexual preference and gender identity have every right to be respected. beauty as shown in the media should not serve as a standard for how you treat people. judgment should not supersede acceptance. criticism should not supersede kindness. you are not here to wound the efforts of others or assume the illusion that you could live their journey in a superior way. we each have a right to our space in this world and no one is more or less deserving.

we live with the stars we choose

We sit out on the balcony, our legs dangling between the bars, the song of car horns and owls echoing in the night air. The city lights reflect against the bottoms of our bare feet, washing out my pale skin tone and illuminating his dark one. Against the glaring bulbs and shining windows below us, the stars are like flashlights in the sun, galaxies merely fading pinpricks against the darkness. We clasp hands and sway to the music of the spheres.

Someday we will climb great cliffs, seek out the stars. But today we merely sit, humidity settling into our skin, the sky bearing down on us, the ground sounding below. And somewhere in between our sweaty palms, we find peace.

The wind rushes down, ruffles the edges of her notebook, pushes her bangs before her eyes, grabs the leaves above her and rattles them, so they sound like a thousand sheets of paper waiting for her thoughts. Her page is empty, the world full. She sits beneath a tree, leaning against its bark, her legs crossed together, and wonders.

How can you stand in a field of flowers, feeling the blossoms tickling your ankles, the dirt filling between your toes, and somehow articulate how you feel? How can you capture a moment, seeing a line of houses blurring into shadows, the little lives running around as troubles descend like raindrops and are dried up by the sun?

How can you explain light, the way it falls on the grass and hits your face, the way it illuminates color, the way it runs through your fingers and hits the ground? How can you cry, tasting the salty tears on your chapped lips, rubbing your eyes red and dampening so many tissues, and somehow form words that others can understand?

How can the stillness of pen and page capture the life of the world? How can your creation rival the universe? 

Writing is a futile art next to experience, she thinks, but she writes anyways.

improv character intro - Jon Edwards

~fast facts~ DOB: Feb 29, 1992 Family: his parents, Jon and Candace Edwards Education: Candlewood High School ‘10, Berklee College of Music ‘14 MBTI: INFP-T

~a brief history~ Heralded as a jazz prodigy in his youth, Jon’s been Candlewood, Illinois’ claim to (potential) fame since age 5. But while his mom Candace was insistently not surprised to see her son succeeding on the world stage, Jon’s not really sure he deserves any of the renown he’s gotten. As a kid, he traveled to jazz camps and festivals all over the United States, where he met - and was intimidated by - some of the most gifted young musicians alive. Jon’s self-doubt manifests itself in occasional bouts of severe stage fright and a need for affirmation from his loved ones, especially Jana, whom he both admires and knows will always be honest with him.

~his persona~ People generally find Jon’s shy nature - especially accompanied by his unusually high voice - endearing, like a little puppy. To be fair, Jon wishes people saw him as a person and not an animal, but he supposes there are worse things to be compared to.

~his personality~ Jon is extraordinarily affectionate and sensitive but also not very logical. He tends to make decisions based on his emotions, which change pretty rapidly. Because of his sensitivity and his extreme investment into everything he does, he’s not great at taking criticism.

This aspect of his personality is especially clear in Jon’s improv. He tends to lose himself in the music and focus on individual chords and scales and motifs rather than the big picture, which causes his music to be very inspired and creative but also to lack structure or direction. Although he originally resisted his teachers’ comments on this fact (see his aversion to criticism), his training at music school has helped him to change this habit.

On the other hand, Jon has high standards for himself. A perfectionist, he tends to procrastinate on his work until he feels like he’s in the right mood and refuses to let people hear or read new songs he’s written until he thinks they’re pretty good, which is hardly ever. Jon often worries that he’s actually a fraud and releasing a song that everyone hates is one of his biggest fears.
