The vitriolic hatred around certain people online is so incredibly manufactured by a bunch of abusers and perpetuated by insane stalkers, and yet so many morons fall for it because the target of their hatred either had a negative opinion about something they liked, made something that don't like, is part of a marginalized community, or otherwise did/is something harmless that nonetheless pisses them off for no reason other than they've got their heads up their asses. They all would be much better off directing their hatred toward someone who actually deserves it, but they can't because that would mean admitting they're nothing more than vindictive bastards looking for targets.

I was agreeing up until this point, because that's the problem - these people THINK they're harassing/attacking people who 'deserve' it. They see themselves as doing the right thing. They've done mental gymnastics and yoga to validate their abuse and harassment. These people legitimately see themselves as some kind of public servant acting for the greater good.

Telling them to turn their hatred toward someone who deserves it is only going to have them attack other people.

Don't give these people any power. They're constantly searching for meek or 'right' targets.

Super unpopular opinion, I know, but I would rather 1000 people get away with posting AI-generated fanfics and fanart than even one person get bullied out of fandom for making a minor anatomical mistake or forgetting the specifics of a plot point that happened 10 chapters earlier or having a style that looks too similar to Midjourney, and the fact that most people seem to believe the opposite is representative of exactly what's wrong with fandom nowadays.

honestly i think we kind of lost the plot on "therapy speak" as a bit of media criticism

i swear it used to refer to a story using a very formal, almost workplace safety-type tone of dialogue that's unintentionally jarring in context and feels like the writer is trying to make extra sure the characters come off as healthy and nice even though the language doesn't make sense contextually, now it seems to frequently refer to characters having any conversation about their feelings at all or even stories that are about therapy/are deliberately evoking that sort of verbage throughout as a stylistic choice. very odd.
