Me: Simply trying to enjoy my day
My depression:
StrawberRuby
Tyrian: Sure you may be verified on twitter, but are you verified in the eyes of our goddess?
Sleet: Martial law?! Are you out of your mind?!
Ironwood:
Okay but, in the intro, after Cinder blows her off?
Emerald is pissed, actually.
Thatâs not normal sad âsenpai didnât notice meâ Emerald, sheâs got her fist clenched, sheâs got Angry Eyebrows, her whole expression just looks bitterâsheâs finally starting to actually resent Cinder.
Once upon a time, Cinder cared enough about keeping Emerald loyal that she would have noticed this and throw Emerald a bone. But right now sheâs so far up her own ass she just takes Emerald and her other underlings for granted, and thatâs gonna bite her in the ass big time.
Theyâre not the same picture but itâs an interesting parallel nonetheless.
In case anyone was wondering, for me the main difference is that I think Ironwood was being much more genuine. Both Blake and Winter were groomed and manipulated, but Adam did it all knowingly while I donât think Ironwood was doing it as intentionally not defending him though.
Expanding on this, Blakeâs storyline with Adam was very much a narrative of personal abuse showcasing how predatory individuals take advantage of people, while Winterâs arc with Ironwood is more a commentary on the dangers of authoritarian militaristic systems as a whole.
(Me on my bullshit again adding long responses to posts I hope you donât mind!!!)
I think this is a very fascinating point, and a great contrast.Â
Blake came from a loving home, and ended up being seduced by an abuser that took advantage of her. In many ways, Adam has a lot of parallels to Jacques Schnee as a man that seduced a prominent figureâs daughter to gain power. I know some people have theorized that Adam targeted Blake BECAUSE she is the daughter of Ghira Belladonna. Because her family are prominent leaders of the Faunus. After all, part of his efforts to solidify his control was ordering the assassination of her family.
Ironwood and Winter are interesting, in that it seems like the Schnee daughters both looked to him as a surrogate father figure. Heâs a âlong time family friendâ, though we donât know if that means he was friends with JACQUES or whether he was friends with the SCHNEES (ie Nicholas and Willow). He seems aware of Jacques mistreating his family, but didnât intervene beyond offering a place for the children to escape.
The problem being that Winter simply replaced one controlling environment for another, attaching to Ironwood as her new father. But I also think that Ironwood himself is someone shaped and damaged by the larger culture of his kingdom. He has become the iconic symbol of Atlas and its military culture, and Iâve wondered a lot about the post-war kingdom. We donât have EXACT ages to go from, but it would be fair to assume James is probably late 40s to maaaaybe late 50s. In other words, like Willow and Jacques he is someone that would have grown up during the kingdomâs great boom. During the era when Atlas was replacing Mantle as the capital, when the kingdom was innovating like never before and rebuilding their military, and becoming a symbol of Progress and Strength to the world.
Ironwood seems completely caught up in that narrative. He has bought entirely into Atlasâs Exceptionalism, and become the figurehead of those beliefs. Where as Nicholas Schnee represented the kingdomâs post-war boom, the growth and innovation and commitment to rebuilding and helping othersâŚ.Ironwood has become the symbol of the kingdom slowly being rotted by elitism, corruption, militarism, and authoritarianism.
It should be remembered that MANTLE STARTED THE GREAT WAR. While Salem undoubtedly manipulated events behind the scenes, Mantle was the kingdom she choose as her catâs paw. That militaristic culture was not erased by the King of Vale reforming the world governments. It simply shifted from an Authoritarian Monarchy, to a kingdom on its slow slide from Democracy to Fascism.Â
Those elements have brewed for decades, and come to fruition with Ironwoodâs raise to dictatorship. He is merely continuing the legacy of his kingdom, while clinging to the belief he is doing what Must Be Done for humanity to survive. Someone said to me that Ironwood thinks heâs in a much different series, and I think this is correct. He believes he is living in a GrimDark Hopeless Story where the hero HAS to be cruel, ruthless, and merciless for anyone to survive.Â
He thinks heâs in Dawn of the Dead, when heâs actually in Warm Bodies.Â
And Winter, godâŚ.Winter has lived through abuse. But she has always known Ironwood as someone that saved her, that gave her a home and a purpose, and made her feel valued. She saw him being kind to her sister. She has always believed in him, so this isâŚ..really a horrifying situation for her. Because she has no where else to go, as far as she knows.
This is the only path forward, and she has CONSISTENTLY been the person at his side excusing and defending his greatest mistakes.
Ghosting Qrow in the field? Well, itâs because YOU MIGHT BE COMPROMISED!
Robyn being a problem? Declare Martial Law.
Abandon Mantle to die? Well, heâs making the hard choices so WE donât have to carry that burden.
Call backup so Weiss has no choice but to leave.
Now, she is seeing him behave like her father but even more violent. And Winter has burned all her bridges, as far as she can see. She cannot go home. She cannot go with her sister.
And Iâd imagine, she still wants to save the man that once saved her from her father.Â
Thank you for this interesting analysis, @harostar .
I have noticed this âFreudian Slipâ sort of situation Winter finds herself in, too, and itâs definitely a source of concern.
âŚYou calling Ironwood a Boomer⢠was incredibly funny though, and in this context, quite revealing as to why his actions were what we saw on screen.
As for Adam⌠Yes, it was probably a calculated move that many ignored, how he decided to target the Belladonna family in more than one way.
All in all, Iâm with you on all this so far.
â
Tl;dr:
- Adam knew what he was doing when he groomed, abused and manipulated Blake.
- Winterâs daddy issues prevailed and put her in another situation where control is taken from her
- Ironwood is a Boomer with a hero complex, blind to the reality of his actions.
You know I had to do it to âem

Oh I just know once Oscar tells everyone that Ironwood tried to off him that Ruby is going to go completely unhinged

Tonights topic of thought: Ruby is really fucking ruthless in the fight with Harriet and Marrow, actually.
Blake and Yang are fighting Elm and Vineâshe knows they can handle that just fine, theyâve been through worse together, and frankly thereâs no way Blake hasnât been holding back showing off her full abilities to them just a bit until now. That leaves Harriet and Marrow, and she knows that together they could have given her and Weiss a very hard time.
But she also knows the AceOps all very well at this pointâall that training cut both ways. So whatâs the first thing she does?
Pricking Harrietâs pride and then rushing off like that wasnât just her being a cocky little shit for the sake of it, that was calculated.
Hit her where it hurts and then just annoy her constantly throughout the fight, make her get tunnel vision and leave Marrow to fend for himself with Weissâand she knows Weiss can handle Marrow because Weiss can turn that from a 1v1 into a 2v1 all on their own.
Frankly, in every group fight the AceOps are in Marrow is ENTIRELY carrying the team without any acknowledgement of that fact, so leaving him without support ensured their defeat.
Pretty sure theyâll find a way to blame him for that, though.
At the same time though sheâs actually really careful not to hurt Harriett. Watch the fight again. Ruby Never tries to hit Harriett with Crescent Rose. Harriett exhausted herself fighting Grimm down in Mantle. Ruby knows that Harriett is gonna run out of aura before her, but sheâs not sure when. And if Harriett runs out of aura while Rubyâs swinging, sheâs dead. And Ruby has better stamina than Harriett. She knows she can withstand Harriettâs attacks for a while. Ruby only gets ready to hit right at the end when she knows she wonât have to, in order to provoke Harriett further.
Iâve seen people doing these for other characters so I thought Iâd give homeboy an inch

RWBY VOLUME 8 SPOILERS
This was such a beautiful little moment. She's exhausted. Angry. Disappointed. Worried. Scared.
The Nora Oscar knows, the bubbly, happy-go-lucky one, is too tired to make an appearance. Oscar expects an absolute bombardment of affection, but Nora is drained, physically and emotionally, and is just relieved to see this boy alive.
Because the last time one of her teammates went to face the bad guy alone...
She didn't make it back.
The way he braces himself and is suprised when he hugs him so gently and sincerely, and then returns her hug almost sadly with an expression of regret, like it's just hit him how tired and worried she was, how much he worried her and all of them by going off alone. It just. Breaks my heart.
What Ironwood said was âI donât know what I would do without youâ but what Winter heard was âif you leave or betray me Iâm going to Get Worse and itâll be your faultâ.
Was just doodling in between class stuff and kind of liked this one enough to colour it
