some people really do need to start reminding themselves that the answer to "why didn't the character just do [something entirely different]" is often simply "because then there wouldn't be a story"

It's also sometimes in accordance with the genre.

Dramas are always going to be melodramatic. Comedies are always going to have silly situations that wouldn't be funny if the characters were real people. And in general, stories have to operate as stories, not reality. Reality's just not that interesting. It's why even "reality TV" isn't real.

I would argue that stories should still work according to the established universe, and it's okay to critique them when they don't. A character who deeply loves their partner shouldn't suddenly cheat on them for no clear reason. A comedy that usually doesn't do "mean humor" doing mean humor is always going to feel "off" when it does.

But yes. Sometimes, it's just for the drama. Sometimes, it's just for the comedy. Sometimes, it's because if things happened the way they do IRL, there would not be a story. Because IRL is made of forever unresolved tension, loose ends and plot holes.
