Nothing irritates me more than when people don't talk in stories to escalate the conflict.
"She walked away before he could say anything". Heard of "wait"? Calling later? Emailing?
free museum trips are wasted on unappreciative middle schoolers. let me go
Some of you may not want to hear this, but sometimes autism accommodation means giving that socially awkward person who said something that came off as passive aggressive or uncomfortable the benefit of the doubt. Not everyone is capable of reading social rules and cues effectively, I thought this was autism 101.
you can always ask for clarification or (NICELY) explain how it came off to you, remember!
I have an autistic coworker who used to say really uncomfortable things to museum guests while making small talk. like bringing up active, controversial revolutions in their countries if they were international, and such. finally, after a group of Hawaiian guys got visibly angry when he asked if they were "in the military or just rich" to be able to live there- meant to be a cost of living joke -I said, "hey, personally, I try not to talk politics with guests. sometimes it may upset them and we don't get paid enough to deal with that"
he looked thoughtful and said, "oh, I never considered it that way." turns out he was just a geopolitics nerd and didn't realize people might react emotionally to what he saw as a purely intellectual discussion
he hasn't done it since
roald dahl was antisemitic. george orwell was openly homophobic. edgar allan poe married his 13 year old cousin. dr seuss cheated on his wife. hp lovecraft was racist as fuck. anyways they’re fucking dead it’s not like you’re enabling their behaviors in the afterlife or something. then again I think orwell’s homophobia bleeds into one of his books so uh keep an eye out for that
the difference between these old white guys and jk rowling is that the former group is all dead. jk rowling is alive and using your money to oppress trans people
My favorite trope is “janitor in headphones continues cleaning through extreme action”
I’ve been the janitor in headphones and trust me it’s an act we just don’t wanna be involved in the nonsense
When I worked in admin, we'd frequently get calls from people who had the wrong number. When I told them, they'd ask if I had the number in our "directory." I would always take a look and give them the right number.
Google. Our "directory" was Google.
'AI Overview' I DIDN'T ASK FOR THAT. I WANT OBSCURE REDDIT THREAD. I WANT 15 YEAR OLD QUORA POST. GET OUTTA HERE SCRAM
Original writing question: Is it okay to not be 100% sure what genre you're writing in when you start? I started with Genre A, but I feel like it's slowly turning into Genre B. There can be overlap between the two, but there are also stark differences.
”This portrayal of a marginalized group was wrong then and is wrong now” and “This portrayal of a marginalized group was very progressive for the time period and paved the way for more representation while likely limited by factors outside of the creator’s control” are two statements that can and should ABSOLUTELY coexist and be kept in mind when interacting with older media
Great example
Beautiful, you don’t HAVE to forgive them. You just can’t ridicule them after leaving for being “tainted” or “evil” or whatever the acceptable word is now. Do not punish the behaviour you want to see.
“But they should’ve known sooner” and we should’ve known sooner that Destiel was never gonna meaningfully happen outside of queerbaiting, what’s your point?
“I never want them near me” that’s fine, but you do realize to insult them, YOU have to get near THEM, right? Wouldn’t it be more conducive to what you want to just leave each other alone?
“What if one of them tries to approach me?” Then you block them online, or you keep the conversation clinical and polite irl. You do NOT take time out of your day to berate them for their old views. Your mother raised you better than that.
Preserving these tags, they're very correct
I would reblog this one million times if I could
As a matter of fact you can!
This is fundamentally how cults WORK, btw
Villainize outsiders, which can look different depending on the cult, make everything an us vs them situation. And then when those outsiders show themselves to be hostile (doesn't matter why) the cult is proven right all along on one of their foundational messages
Critically important:
Fuck it, shout out to people who take longer to do things or have to do stuff slower than the average person.
Shout out to people who need extra time on tests.
Shout out to people who take longer to internalize information.
Shout out to people who take longer to talk.
Shout out to people who walk slowly, or take longer to get from one place to another.
Shout out to people who take longer to form connections with others.
Shout out to people who write slowly.
Shout out to people who read slowly.
Shout out to people who need extra time to rest between activities.
Shout out to people who can only do so much in a day.
Shout out to people with low dexterity that makes them do things slower.
Shout out to people who in some way have been deemed “slow”.
I see you, I hear you, and I will gladly wait for you if you want me to. I see effort you put in. I’m sorry that you have to be rushed so much. I hope that you can have the time you need, and that you get a support system that understands. You deserve to be able to exist at your pace.
And to the rest of yall, please for the love of fuck be patient. We are doing our best. We are going as fast as we can.
the thing is that childhood doesn't just end when you turn 18 or when you turn 21. it's going to end dozens of times over. your childhood pet will die. actors you loved in movies you watched as a kid will die. your grandparents will die, and then your parents will die. it's going to end dozens and dozens of times and all you can do is let it. all you can do is stand in the middle of the grocery store and stare at freezers full of microwave pizza because you've suddenly been seized by the memory of what it felt like to have a pizza party on the last day of school before summer break. which is another ending in and of itself
shoutout all my neurodivergent folk who Dont have autism or adhd
hey fellow autistic folk and adhders. this post isn't about you. this post is about all the other neurodivergence that is specifically Not autism or adhd. maybe the clearest post on the site about that actually. i'm autistic and have adhd too, but this post is specifically not about that. stop making it about your autism or your adhd.
it's about npd, bpd, psychosis, schizophrenia, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, epilepsy, DLD, did, osdd (and any other plurality/multiplicity), depression, brain damage, anxiety, tourettes, down syndrome, ptsd, and everything else. it's specifically about neurodivergence that ISNT autism or adhd.
Neurodiversity is very diverse, because brains are stupidly complex.
I, for one, have cerebral palsy. It effects how my brain coordinates my muscles and my balance (or rather, fails to coordinate) my muscles and balance.
It's not often included in the Neurodiversity Box, though, because the effects are visible from the outside, and the brain part isn't.

Yes, and you, too (woo! or not)
one of the hardest things to learn as a depressed former Gifted Kid™ is that half-assed is better than nothing. take the 50%, 40%, even 20% job. scrubbing your face is better than not taking a shower at all. picking up your clothes is better than never cleaning. nibbling on some bread is better than starving.
DO THINGS HALFWAY. NOW YOU’RE 100% BETTER OFF THAN YOU WERE BEFORE.
One of my college professors used to say “anything worth doing is worth doing poorly.” I didn’t understand that for years because I didn’t do anything poorly, I couldn’t do anything poorly, I had to Do Everything Perfectly.
But brushing your teeth for 30 seconds is better than not brushing them at all when that 2 minutes seems exhausting. Doing ten minutes of yoga is better than 10 minutes of sitting when 30 minutes of cardio sounds impossible. Changing my clothes is good when a whole shower is impossible. Standing on the porch for a few minutes is worth it after being in the house for three straight days because I don’t have the energy to go anywhere.
Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly… because doing it poorly is better than not doing it.
someone please hit me over the head with this post every day for like the next week thanks. a mention, a reblog with text, a message, something.
Obsessed with the DC tourist asking for clubs with a “no ugly people allowed” policy that plays house
Is this person NYC or LA? Place your bets
#if sir Walter elliot used reddit (@spookyohan)
oh my god this is me. i was addicted to designer amphetamines and completely delusional at the time of writing this. i had lost forty pounds and thought i was hot shit. i thought i was the reincarnation of Kurt Vonnegut. this was serious, and my friends laughed when they saw this go viral on twitter. it made me realize i had issues and im sober now. im also shocked i managed to stay employed at that time. To answer your question: im from LA but I grew up all around. I was living between Baltimore and NYC at the time. My mom is a beautiful Italian woman (Milan by way of Bolzano) and my dad is an insufferable Mexican from Montreal.
fwiw, my Reddit was suspended for this, im doing a lot better now, life is good, and im really happy :)
this is the most viscerally effective anti-drug PSA i've ever seen, not least because i think it's plausibly true, unlike the ones i normally see
We gotta stop acting like being nice to disabled people is a virtuous act as opposed to basic human decency.
