The Black Madonna of the town of Torre Annunziata, known as Maria SS. della Neve was discovered in the ocean by some fisherman in the 1300s in a wooden box that they brought to shore. Two towns rivaled for her, and she made herself so heavy and refused to leave Torre Annunziata, which is where she has stayed ever since. Legend has it that once, when Mt. Vesuvius was about to erupt, which would have been very detrimental (think Pompeii!), La Madonna Nera made it snow, saving the whole region from turmoil. This was on August 5, which normally means scorching heat. They knew it was her blessing because she had been discovered next to a pile of snow, in similar fashion- in the middle of the heat. Her skin is very dark, and, oddly enough, in this picture, my skin is too.
