Crown made in the year 1465 by Pere Àngel.
49,3 x 64 x 2,5 cm. Girona Art Museum.
It was commissioned by Peter of Portugal, who had been elected as King of the Catalans in 1463 during the Catalan civil war between the Government of Catalonia and the king John II.
He commissioned a diadem-shaped silver crown to be offered to the Virgin Mary of Castelló d'Empúries (town in the Comarques Gironines area of Catalonia). It was made by Pere Àngel, a silversmith of Italian origin who had been living and working in Girona (Catalonia) for many years and who had already made two religious diadems for Saint Mary and Baby Jesus statues in the nearby Roses Monastery the previous decade.
The crown was made using different kinds of moulds and adding little elements that had been made separately. It is ornamented with the Catalan shield (the four bars) and Peter of Portugal's family motto "paine pour joie" (French for "pain for joy", meaning that it's necessary to go through hardships to reach joy).
Have you ever seen a violinist going APESHIT?!
Be sure to check out IAmDSharp!
GO OFFF
Ok so I’ve been playing for 18 years and i’m a string teacher. Can i just say how IMPORTANT it is for young kids to see a BLACK, MALE-PRESENTING PERSON playing, nae, SHREDDING on a violin? I’ve know maybe 5 black people who played stringed instruments throughout my schooling and teaching (predumably because i’m an upper middle class white woman). In districts where the population is predominantly black, funding is always low, so the instruments are crappy. Kids quit, or the program is dismantled. I’ve seen very few professional string players who are black.
Obviously there are black string players. We just don’t see them because they “don’t look like” string players.
This person is the real deal. They were clearly classically trained, and seems to have some fiddle training as well. How cool is that?
But also… RAD PLAYING MY DUDEEEE
this is the coolest guy alive actually
I think this might be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in my life that involves a violin
Reminder that “tradwife” is not a synonym for “stay at home mom.” It’s specifically a part of an antifeminist, white supremacist, antiblack, antisemitic, lesbophobic, transphobic hate movement. The concept comes from Neo-Nazis who believe that Jews are trying to get white women to have children with Black men, stay single, date other women, or be trans men — instead of what they believe is white women’s “natural” role of being subservient to a white man. They believe this is because Jews are trying to orchestrate a white genocide by lowering white gentile birthrates and creating more mixed-race kids, and that they can fight this by marrying tradwives who will have lots of white babies.
Yes, I understand that language changes and that this word has shifted, but I think we should think twice before casually adopting Neo-Nazi terminology. I do think most people who use this term are describing a concept that is specifically regarding the gendered power dynamics of conservative antifeminist couples where the wife stays home, and is ideologically probably genuinely a descendant of the Neo-Nazi concept. So I understand, but I also don’t think we should be doing white supremacists’ work for them by normalizing their ideas even more.
Makes me headdesk when people talk about “Jewish tradwives” or “Black tradwives.” Definitionally neither of these can be a thing. Yes there can be conservative SAHMs who homestead in any community, obviously. But they are not tradwives.
And like, yeah, maybe at some point I will have to accept that the definition has shifted because I am actually a linguistic descriptivist, but that will just be a sign that Nazis have successfully normalized one of their concepts. And in any case, people should know where this term comes from.
And it's anti-science!
These chucklefucks support the notion that birth control is harming women. Can it be harmful? Sure, talk to your doctor about that. But as a whole, birth control has enabled women to stay in school longer, to have higher paying jobs, to have better economic status, to keep from unwanted marriages, to keep their health in many cases, and, most importantly, to not have unwanted children. This has led to a declining birth rate, and white supremacists are convinced that white people not having babies is allowing people of color to "out-breed" and overtake the white population. Tradwives and their supporters push the idea that birth control irrevocably changes your brain chemistry (it doesn't), makes women manlier (it doesn't), makes men into women via trace birth control in the water (it doesn't), and causes sky rocketing rates of heart disease, embolisms, and cancers (mostly untrue... Birth control can sometimes cause clots but that's a rare side effect. Again, talk to your doctor).
They also push the "all natural birth" bullshit. At its least dangerous, that means forgoing epidurals during labor. On the other end of the spectrum, that means having a baby and receiving NO. NEONATAL. CARE. At all! Not a sonogram, no vitamins, no genetic testing, no glucose testing, nada. There's a big push to have no medical care and then do a home birth. So if the baby is breech, there's no way to know about it beforehand.
Did we lose the term housewife somewhere?
If you want to refer to a stay at home mom who runs the house but isn't ideologically aligned with the neo-nazi tradwife concept, could you not just call her a housewife????
The tribe wife movement which is part of the larger "traditional family" movement, and that's important to know, is not just anti-science when it comes to birth control, obstetric and neonatal care, it's also anti-science when it comes to vaccinations. The anti-vaxxers immediately found common cause with these people whose goal is to reject modernity.
They also reject basic and well settled science on nutrition and food safety. It should be no surprise that the raw milk movement is directly connected to the traditional family movement.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to be a stay at home mother. There is nothing wrong with wanting to have a piece of land where you can raise some chickens and a nice sized kitchen garden. There's nothing wrong with wanting to live as naturally as possible and avoid unnecessary medicine or medical treatments. But that's not all this movement is, and they take it all to the worst extreme and for the worst reasons.
And let's be really truthful. Convincing young women to discard higher education and personal development to undertake this extremely labor intensive, health eroding, intentionally isolating and fully dependent lifestyle within a year or two of graduating from high school is setting them up for physical, emotional and financial abuse that will also be meted out to their children.
And when their husbands tire of them because they have put their foot down about no more babies or because they have complained "too much" about their workload or simply because a middle aged woman with life experience isn't as enjoyable to a "traditional husband" as a naïve, nubile teenager, they are left with nothing. No skills, no income except whatever support they are ordered, (which will be paid begrudgingly, slowly, or not at all) and no good way to start all over again with limited money and a bunch of kids they'll still be primary parent for. And that's a part of the movement too, keeping women compliant, agreeable and silent through fear of what happens if they are left.
Nobody wins in the traditional family movement except men.
Remember all those cartoons and sitcoms where a dad tries doing chores for the day to give the woman a break? They are always shown to be incompetent with incredibly epic failures.
Let's not go back to those days where it was normal. Goofy didn't get kissed by the mailman for this shit.

The thing about Ian Rider is that he could go either way. Did Ian groom Alex Rider into a dangerous life of spying for MI6 from a young age, or was he encouraging Alex's natural talents and trying to give him the skills to survive in a world where very dangerous people were always going to have a grudge against him simply for who his father was? Who knows! Either is entirely plausible!!! MI6 executed an immediate and terrifying level of manipulation and coercion upon Ian's death to get Alex to put his life on the line for them. Is this something Ian could have expected? Did he want it? Was it planned with his input? Did he actually leave Alex's custody to MI6, or was that a lie? Who on earth has the answers now besides Alan Blunt? And we know we can't trust a word he says.
Alex is very motivated in the series by information on his parents, something both MI6 and Scorpia use against him. Did Ian set him up for this by withholding that information in his childhood, or was he struggling with his own grief over his brother and trying to keep Alex safe by staying quiet, since so much of John's story was classified? Who don't know. We can't know.
Ian is a ghost over the entire series. Helen and John Rider are too, each in different ways, but Ian is interesting in that you think you have more of him than you really do. Alex does not seek information on his uncle. Is it because he thinks he knows everything already? Or because he can't face the admission that he doesn't?
We don't even know Ian's real relationship with MI6. Did they blackmail him like they did Alex? Or was that treatment only for Alex, since hiring him is so shady to begin with? Did Ian Rider ever sit in a room with Alan Blunt and give a report on his nephew? Or is he spinning in his grave over everything that his employers did to his nephew once he was no longer there to stand in the way? We don't know! We can't! I'm going insane!!

OUGH.
ATACAMA DESERT?!?!?
Huh... Neat!
It looks like it hangs out in some canyon stream beds, which makes sense as that's where I would expect to find the most water in such an arid environment. Thinking about how things are in Arizona, groundwater fed springs can often crop up in canyons, and rivers can be fed by them in addition to snow runoff or other precipitation from farther afield. Even if it's dry most of the time, that's where the water is all going to flow to.
They must get plenty of water where they are, because these guys also get Really big. 4 meters high is insane. Really calling back to their ancestors in the Carboniferous there that were some of the first trees.
According to the paper I found, they also have some interesting interactions with fungi and bacteria in transferring nutrients into and out of the soil.

Going to see children and adolescents dance badly, play ball badly, sing badly, play recorder badly because they are young: YES! YOU ARE LEARNING! INCREDIBLE!
People are so rude about going to watch the children in their lives do stuff shittily. “Ugh toddler dance recital,” “ugh tee-ball weekend again,” “ugh nativity play.”
That guy learned what skipping is this year and now he’s playing the piano the worst I’ve ever seen but the best he’s ever done! AREN’T YOU CAPTIVATED BY THEIR ABILITY TO DO A LITTLE BIT WHEN PREVIOUSLY THEY COULD DO NOTHING? Be filled with wonder and joy!

Went to my little cousin’s first band concert recently, in which she had a trumpet solo. After playing it, she looked over at where we were all sitting and looked so pleased and proud of herself. I want to remember that moment for the rest of my life.
