Don’t clean up this blood. For Carlo Giuliani, publicly executed on this day 25 years ago. context under the cut

Carlo Giuliani was a 23 year old who was killed during the no-global, anti g8 summit demonstrations in Genoa, Italy, on July 20th 2001. Carlo was shot in broad daylight, by a police officer who was pointing a gun at the crowd from inside an armored police vehicle. Seconds before being shot, Carlo was attempting to disarm the officer by tossing a fire extinguisher at the hand holding the gun (which was the only visible body part since the officer was fully inside). He was shot to the head right as he had lifted the fire extinguisher. Before he received medical attention and while he was bleeding unconscious on the ground, he was first run over twice by the same police vehicle he had been shot from, on the legs, then dozens of officers gathered around his body, hit him multiple times on the head with a rock to try to conceal the bullet entrance wound, they prodded at him with sticks, put cigarettes off on his arms, planted a little utility knife in his pocket, and upon realizing a photographer was standing right there, they bodily lifted him and pressed him on Carlo’s still bleeding body to scare and coerce him not to release any photos he had taken during those moments. When the doctors came a pulse was still detected, but it was too late. The blood loss too severe.

Red like the swimsuit he wore under his trousers.

Red like the fire extinguisher that any one of us would have tried throwing, just as he did.

Red like the blood on the scorching ground of Piazza Alimonda.

Red like the flowers laid upon the sawdust, a few hours later, on that very spot.

Red like the wound impressed on our hearts, upon entire generations, during the violent crackdown of a hot July charged with the finest ideas: twenty-five years later, we wear that wound like a tattoo, all of us, even those who, like me, were too young to understand what was happening. We wear it with the sense of responsibility of those who know they have lost something immense, and the bitterness of those who know they were right all along—and with the certainty that there will never be room for remorse.

Oh Richard. He probably has the most compelling and satisfying character arcs in the history of television, it’s up there with Zuko. I will miss this guy so much. He means a lot to servers worldwide! Ebon Moss Bachrach perfectly captures the thrill one gets when taking care of people and making them feel cared for and getting to see their reactions to said care in real time. The first time I watched s2e6 I was so ecstatic I had to get up from my seat and spent half of it jumping up and down as if I was watching sports because it is THAT electrifying and serious and beautiful!
