I could see ten years ago that Windows was getting slowly worse and worse over time and that eventually I'd have to jump ship.

After testing out a few linux distros on the laptop (which has very simple usage needs) I finally installed Fedora (with the KDE Plasma desktop) on the PC.

That was more than a year ago. I've never looked back.

See, here's the big user-experience difference between Windows and Linux: when you run into issues you need to google the solution. But the results that you get for Linux are clear and actually work.

For gaming: kernel-level anticheat is currently an obstacle. I personally don't think it's going to keep going like this indefinitely (one of them's going to get hacked and then a WHOLE lot of computers are going to be ransomwared or something) - but for steam you can turn on Proton Experimental for it to do automatic compatibility for everything (the more popular the game, the better it works in my experience). Lutris for GOG. Prism for Minecraft.

Oh, and discord voice chat doesn't work right in the standalone app, open it in the browser.
