You know what really chaps my ass?
The internet LOVES saying, "No one is responsible for your triggers." Cool. Great. So why the hell does that suddenly disappear the second someone brings up misophonia? I swear every other comment section is full of people acting like the person sitting next to them eating is committing some kind of crime. Chewing. Slurping. Swallowing. Gulping. Existing.
I've literally seen people complain about someone chewing with their mouth CLOSED. I'm sorry, but what exactly do you want people to do? Photosynthesize?
People eat. Food makes sounds. You are going to hear someone chew. You are going to hear someone swallow. You are going to hear someone take a drink. And before someone jumps in with "but misophonia is real," yes. I know it is. I know it can be horrible. I know people don't choose to have that burden but they CAN curb that ridiculous entitlement.
Sometimes people slurp because they're eating something that is literally impossible to eat without making a little noise. Some foodf is messy. Get over it. Nobody is sitting there plotting how to ruin your day by taking a bite of food. I've seen people act like the entire world needs to learn how to eat silently because they can't handle hearing it. And I'm sorry, but no. You cannot police every sound a person makes while doing a completely normal human activity.
And honestly, think about the people who are trying to recover from eating disorders. Think about someone who is finally getting comfortable eating around other people again. Finally not hiding. Finally allowing themselves to have a normal relationship with food.
Then they go online and see thousands of people acting like eating sounds are disgusting. Like chewing, swallowing, or taking a bite is something shameful. Oh, but non is responsible for her triggers right?
The second someone is eating near you, suddenly they are responsible for making sure your brain doesn't react. Which is it? You don't get to demand everyone else stop making normal human noises because you don't like them. Be considerate? Absolutely.
Chew with your mouth open and with zero manners? Yeah, that's rude. Making normal human sounds? Get over it. People are allowed to exist.
