MYRA RUIZ and FABI BANG bring a Pride Flag to the stage during curtain call in the Brazilian production of Wicked
So, what if...
If the story of Wicked is told by Glinda, and she is our narrator, how do we know we can trust her? She thinks herself wicked and tells a story where she is punished for her crimes. She tells a story where Elphaba barely does anything wrong and is the hero of the story. And when Fiyero dies because of her, and Elphaba is also killed, she spends days and nights thinking about them. So the story in her mind changes.
She remembers the Scarecrow looking a bit familiar. Maybe...? Maybe thats what actually happened to Fiyero. Maybe he is not dead!
Glinda told you that Fiyero turned into Scarecrow, and Elphaba survived. Through a trapdoor, really? Did you really believe that?
And maybe, Fiyero saved Elphaba. And maybe they ran away together... and left Glinda behind, cause that's what she deserves!
No, Glinda is not telling you the truth. They are both dead, because of her. But she gave them a happy ending in her story, and ended up cursing herself for eternally wondering, when they might come back.
But they never will.
Cause they actually died.

So while I’ve been working on remaking my Nessa doll’s Ozdust outfit, I’ve been thinking about costume design and how they tell Nessa’s story about being restricted and infantilized due to her father’s influence. There’s a wider discussion but the choice of putting her primarily in knitted or crocheted fabrics in Part 1 is fascinating to me. When we’re first introduced to her, she’s in the Shiz uniform, but when she’s on her first date, she’s in head to toe knitwear in a sea of woven fabrics, and you can see how heavy that fabric is from the way it moves in the dance scene:
Of course, let’s not forget that she’s wearing primarily white with her signature red threaded throughout. You see this color combination again at the train station when she meets her father(but we’ll touch on that later). The long sleeves, the overwhelming white, the inherent softness of knit fabric—it paints a picture of Nessa’s innocence and naïveté, but of how sheltered she is. I can’t help but look at the ruffles at her elbows and see elbow pads. The red Xs all over her bodice restricts the elasticity of the knit fabric.
Beyond the Ozdust, the next time we would have seen Nessa is in the deleted poppy field scene that I’m hoping will be used in Wicked Part 2:
So much is happening here. Nessa’s knitted sweater is sweet but it’s massive and heavy looking compared to the lightweight white woven pleated skirt. Speaking of, there’s a lot less white in her outfit. Of course there’s white in her green saddle shoes, but her sweater is a lovely fawn color that matches her striped socks. She’s experimenting! She’s learning about herself! And maybe she likes the heavy familiarness of knit but it doesn’t have to be pure white.
When she sees her father again, though? We’re back in full length, pure white knit with a hint of red for contrast again.
I can’t help but wonder if, like her mother’s shoes, Frexpar bought Nessa’s Ozdust dress, because it is SO similar to her Train Station dress, only her Train Station dress only has a few swirls of red at the bottom and a red collar. There’s a lot more lace here too, making her look even more infantile (I still think it’s pretty but not the point 😂). Also, it makes me wonder how enmeshed Nessa and Frexpar because the white and red are literally knitted together and how heavy his influence over her is.
Anyway I’m just word vomiting so I can get to sleep, but let me know what you think!
"An organizational psychologist, Adam Grant, sent me a message saying, “It’s a masterful portrayal of superficiality masking depth.” Out of all the things I’ve heard, that is the thing I’m going to get printed on a T-shirt."

what's crazy is that glinda is kind of inherently a cynic and elphaba's sort of inherently an idealist but because one is blonde and bubbly and the other is maudlin and sarcastic people think it's the other way around, love this #diverserepresentation
