Okay, so I'm working on reformatting (??? is that the right word, or is it re-structuring???) my fic because I've learned that big paragraphs are scary for some people. I get it. That's a lot of words and probably a lot of information to take in at once. However, I was taught to write 12-14 sentences, minimum, in a paragraph. I was also taught that sentences should never too short and/or choppy. So I'll write strings of long sentences; one right after the other. I've learned I shouldn't do that either. Long sentences are okay to have, but the sentences after should be short(er).
Most of the writing skills I use when writing for fun come from a middle school English teacher I had. She got her start as a journalist for our local newspaper. Her writing was always fun and entertaining, but had a lot of information in it too. She won awards for her writing. I remember writing essays and freestyle stuff for her (for fun!), and having her go over them in the hopes of improving my writing skills. I learnt how to write essays fairly well, and my writing did improve when she taught.
Then I got in high school, and they didn't want any kind of free writing at all. They had to have everything in a set format. It was easier to read/grade that way. I want my stuff to be easier for others to read period. If a person comes across a long paragraph in a fic of mine though, please don't be afraid of it! I just didn't know how to break it up. I like maintaining the flow of a paragraph, and sometimes it hard to make one flow into the next. When I'm stuck, I add dialogue. If I can't move the scene along, hopefully the characters can. It's been a while since I've written for fun too. So I'm having to find my footing again on that front.
I'm working on practicing these tips, while still trying to maintain my own sense and style of writing. It's a hard thing to do. I'm not trying to make my fic perfect, I don't think I can do that. I just want to improve my writing skills. I want to be able to write a story, and not have it a sound like a college essay or thesis. I'm trying to learn how to write for fun again. In the mean time, if someone's followed me because they like my fanfiction: I'm sorry I'm such a slow writer. Let's hope the wait'll be worth it though.
I’m super glad to see that you’re exploring your writing style and trying to figure out what works best for you! I hope you don’t mind any unsolicited advice, so I’m just gonna talk about two things that you mentioned.
1. The length of your sentences don’t matter all that much as long as they flow well and makes sense. A long sentence feels long winded when it the points feel disconnected, and short sentences only feel choppy when they don’t flow together. As long as you got a good flow to your sentences, you should have nothing to worry about.
2. If you are still worrying about the length of your sentences or the length of your paragraphs, you should always stop what feels natural. Most people know that if a different character speaking or the same changes, that should be a new paragraph. However, you are allowed to break your paragraphs however you want to, it’s your choice. Break where it feels natural to break, even if that means your paragraph is only one sentence long.
I totally understand if you don’t care about anything I just said, but I wish you the best of luck with your writing journey. And never apologize for being a slow writer! Writing is art, and art takes time!

Another thing that really helps me when I’m writing, because I also love long paragraphs and long sentences, is keeping my doc double spaced. Because there’s more spacing in between each line, my paragraphs feel fuller or like they’re taking up more space. So, it kind of satisfies my love for long paragraphs by tricking me into thinking the paragraph is longer than it actually is.

You are allowed to write a better world than you see.
Write soft academia. Write loyal friends. Write healthy relationships. Write good parents. Write siblings who get along.
You can have a plot even when your characters love each other. You can have tension even when people are kind.
✨CAPTAIN REX CINEMATIC UNIVERSE✨
I have a very spicy and galaxy-brained take that none of you are prepared for but I’m gonna say it anyway.
To clarify: In Star Wars: the Clone Wars season 1 episodes 11 and 12 “Dooku Captured” and “The Gungan General” (2009), Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi meet Hondo Ohnaka for the first time when they, along with Count Dooku, are captured and held for ransom by him. This establishes the dynamic between Anakin, Obi-Wan and Hondo. Later, in season 5 episode 5 “Tipping Points” (2012), the conclusion to the Onderon story arc, since the Jedi and the Republic cannot directly interfere with the Onderon Rebellion, Anakin pays Hondo to deliver heavy weapons to the Onderon rebels so that the rebels will get the reinforcements they need but Republic will have plausible deniability, so overall Hondo has a small but very impactful role in the Onderon arc. The Onderon arc is crucial to the backstory and overall character arc of Saw Gerrera, who eventually becomes a huge pain in the Empire’s ass, but most notably raises and trains Jyn Erso, who then goes on to lead the mission to steal the plans for the first Death Star. In addition, Dooku later sends Grievous to destroy Hondo’s stronghold to get payback which is the beginning of how Hondo eventually loses his crew, which results in him eventually meeting Ezra Bridger, thus getting involved with the Rebellion, and in Star Wars: Rebels season 3 episodes 1 and 2 “Steps Into Shadow Parts 1 and 2″ (2017), Hondo informs the growing Rebellion of some old Republic Y-Wings in the possession of the Empire and helps them steal the Y-Wings before the Empire dismantles them. Those Y-Wings later become a key part of the Rebel Alliance fleet, and are the SAME Y-Wings used during the battle against the first Death Star. In conclusion, if Hondo Ohnaka had not decided to hold two Jedi and a Sith Lord hostage to make a quick million that one time, then the Death Star would never have been destroyed.
