Shannon Szabados: There’s this stereotype that goalies are weird. I don’t think that’s true. Goalies are totally normal.
Genevieve Lacasse:
Amanda Levielle:
Shannon Szabados: I just don’t get where that stereotype comes from.
I just love this photo of a 17 year old Marianne Dahlstrøm in 1984. She was on the Norwegian national team from it's first year in 1987 - was named captain - and played her last world championship 21 years later.
But this article is written before all that. Here's a quote:
Marianne is an athlete at a very high level, but there are hardly any other top athlete in Norway who has fewer opportunities of translating their talent into championships, honor, glory, fame and money.
A-magasinet 31.03.1984.
white dude hockey fans hate black athletes and they’re not even subtle about it. everytime they have a chance they drag nfl and nba players when it’s completely unrelated and unwarranted. they’re always talking about how hockey players are so much “classier” than football and basketball players as if it has anything to do with demeanor and not some poorly veiled racism.
white women too y’all are just as bad

When you follow a ton of women’s hockey players on Instagram
btw if anyone’s gonna try and make noise abt how womens sports just dont make money id like to remind you that the nwhl has turned a profit in its 4th year while the carolina hurricanes are STILL running at a loss
“We may represent different teams, leagues and countries but collectively we stand as one. #ForTheGame”
Women’s hockey players are officially on strike in North America.
Legit, dozens of players have tweeted this out. It’s real and there’s a very real chance that there won’t be women’s hockey next year in North America.
Regardless of what you think about all of this, your first priority should be supporting workers rights, and that means supporting women’s hockey players.
This will forever be one of my favorite things on Twitter.
dubas literally said he doesn’t want morgan or the leafs treated as victims like can y’all stop demonizing lgbt fans for being angry when they heard what sounded like a loud and clear slur from mo and stop saying things like “i’m so relieved my fave player is innocent problem solved!” the homophobia in the nhl runs much fucking deeper than whether or not this one player said a slur and some of y’all need to shut up and realize it’s not your place and there are more important things than whether you can keep supporting a player or not. the problem is not solved and this is far bigger than whether this one guy said a slur or not.
Morgan Rielly was accused of using a homophobic slur. The NHL investigation said he didn’t, but that’s hardly the most important part of the story.
Words are wind, and this time the brought in a storm that ripped apart hockey fandom and turned us against each other. Now we must rebuild so that the next time wind comes, we stand strong and together.
So, I managed to put all my thoughts, mostly, into one place. I know a 1600 word essay isn’t the best way to reach the people. But I’m a history major it’s the only way I know how.
🙌🏼 Anyone who claims hockey players don’t use that word a) is lying or b) has never played on or interacted with a men’s hockey team. It’s a problem and it needs to be addressed.
brianne jenner winning face offs is so hot

“I hope to see the league at a place one day in the future where we have to play in NHL rinks because we have that many fans that recognize the work CWHL athletes put into their careers on and off the ice.”

TJ Oshie and Gigi Marvin (who won Gold with the US Women’s hockey team)
Per Wikipedia’s entry on Warroad, MN:
Warroad, called “Hockeytown USA”, is also noted for its strong hockey tradition. The Warroad High School program has earned four men’s state championship titles (‘94, ‘96, ‘03, ‘05) and two women’s (‘10, ‘11) in the past 20 years, and has produced NHL and Olympic players. No U.S. Hockey Olympic Men’s team has won a gold medal without a player from Warroad on the roster.
And because of Gigi, 50% of the US women’s gold medals, too!
And oh, just FYI:
The population was 1,781 at the 2010 census.
The Road Through Warroad is a half-hour documentary exploring the town’s programs.
One of the reasons often pulled out for how Warroad works is that ice time is free and you can’t reserve it. If someone else is skating when you want to, you skate with them.
If you’re good and someone else isn’t, you’re expected to help them. (And you will, because god do you not want to be known as That Asshole in a small Northern town.)
The most talented teens share the ice with toddlers just learning to stand up, little kids get to watch and play pickup with the big kids, and kids of all genders play with and against each other.
Henry Boucha (former Red Wing, best mustache, TJ’s cousin and coach) tells a story about how when TJ first came to Warroad, Henry made him play against Marvin. Both of them burst into tears, because they were so perfectly, evenly matched neither of them could win.
