i really do think there’s a huge disconnect on here w/ people who have never used tiktok as to what it actually is and who actually uses it. the number of people i’ve seen call it a “teen dancing app” is actually insane. it has not been a teen dancing app since i was in high school, around 2016 - 2020. the main communities i saw on a daily basis were 1) black history/anti-racism educators, 2) high school & college teachers sharing in-classroom strategies and frustrations with the education system, 3) local/state political leaders giving real-time updates on behind-the-scenes government decisions, & 4) community activism & leadership. like tiktok is an adult platform. almost every person i interacted with was my age or older. and yes it completely depends on your fyp and how you interact with the app, yes there’s still teenagers and dance videos and literally anything else you can think of. but these communities of adults aren’t insubstantial at all, they have literally millions of interactions on a daily basis. there’s about a million other types of communities that i could name just off the top of my head, because the range of users was SO diverse and thriving. it’s a long-distance community tool, just like any other social media—and honestly much better than any other social media, because it relies primarily on the kindness of strangers. i saw at least 5-10 videos today of queer people in rural areas panicking because they don’t have any access to queer community on any other platform or in real life. and before i end this i do want to say i think tiktok is coming back, i think this is a highly orchestrated political move, etc., but i do know it won’t ever be exactly the same. people are panicking about free speech violations because tiktok was a place where people fucking SPEAK. i have never seen mass mobilization and communication in this same way for as long as i’ve been alive. it is the people’s app, not just a silly teenage thing. if you’re not on tiktok and never have been, please stop talking about it like you know anything at all😭

"ohh but it'll take them longer to realize they're actually gay" i know my experiences aren't universal but like. if i wasn't ready to face my lesbianism then i was Not Ready, you could've eliminated every other label in existence and i still wouldn't have accepted it. if anything, the ability to try out different labels helped me learn about myself, explore the community, and accept that maybe not being straight wasn't so bad.

Just a friendly reminder that, for reasons I hope they are forced to explain, Republican leaders lied to the American people about what they knew and when they knew it. There are going to be real public health consequences from these lies, and I sure hope there are political consequences, as well.

So I just now learned about Stagecoach Mary and how have I never heard of this absolute LEGEND of a woman before

She was born a slave and freed when the Emancipation Proclamation was issued (she was about 30)

She was about six feet tall and 200 pounds and once she was free she decided she’d never take shit from anyone ever again

When one of her close friends, a nun by the name of Mother Amadeus, became ill with pneumonia at her convent in Montana, Mary headed alone into the frontier to nurse Mother Amadeus back to health

After Mother Amadeus recovered, she gave Mary a job as the foreman of the convent. She repaired buildings, took care of chickens, made the long and dangerous journeys into town for supplies, and did other odd jobs.

She could drink most men under the table, and one saloon offered five bucks and a free shot of whiskey to any man who could take a punch to the face from Mary and remain standing.

She was once said by a local paper to have broken more noses than anyone else in Montana

She was outspokenly Republican, which at this time was the liberal party in America, and would get into political debates with the more conservative townsfolk

One time a man insulted her outside the saloon so hit him in the face with a rock, and only stopped when other cowboys held her back.

On one supply run into town, her wagon overturned and the horses fled. Mary spent all night single-handedly fending off a pack of wolves with her guns before she righted the heavy wagon by herself and tracked down the spooked horses. The only thing lost in the accident was a jar of molasses.

She lost her job at the convent when she got into a gunfight with a male employee who did not want to take orders from a black woman. She reportedly shot him in the ass, which angered the local bishop.

After losing her convent job, Mary spent a brief time running a restaurant, where she welcomed and served all comers

When a job for a mail carrier opened at the local US Post Office, Mary got the job because she managed to hitch six horses to a wagon faster than any of the male candidates

She was sixty at the time

This made her the first black woman mail carrier, and the second woman mail carrier in US history

When the snows were too deep for the horses to manage the long and dangerous delivery routes, Mary would strap on snowshoes, put the bags of mail on her shoulders, and do it herself

At one point she apparently had a pet eagle????

She only retired from the mail route when she was about 70 years old, and instead made a quieter living by babysitting and running a laundry business in the town of Cascade

She was a huge baseball fan and often gave the local team a big bouquet of flowers from her garden

The people of Cascade loved Mary so much that they closed the schools annually on her birthday

When a law was passed in Montana that forbade women from drinking in saloons, the mayor of Cascade granted Mary an exemption.

When her house burned down, the whole town got together to help her build a new one

She continued drinking, fighting, and going to baseball games until she died of liver failure at 82 in 1914

Well, on the surface, this looks pretty bad. But another perspective is this: have you ever tried to buy a meal for one of these panhandlers instead of giving them money? My experience has been that they won’t take it. They want the money. Generally, they aren’t homeless. To say they are homeless is just a tug on the heartstrings so you’ll give more money. One specific panhandler I know about lived in a comfortable, but not fancy, home, rode a mid-expensive bicycle to “work”, and made, on average, $1200 tax free dollars a week. That’s nearly $5000 a month with no taxes taken out for anything. Nice gig there. So, based on these types of people, cities started passing ordinances against panhandling, which, no doubt, hurt some ppl who are truly homeless and just trying to get some money for whatever they need. There are homeless shelters and tent cities in most big towns and cities, and there are free meals offered by churches, the Salvation Army, and others, so panhandling just might not be what the signs say. Just a different perspective on this.

I’ve been in a position to have to beg before, I don’t want you to buy me an unhealthy meal when I am probably already full. I want money so I can buy diapers for my daughter or medicine for my wife. I need cash to avoid having to raise a 5 year old autistic child in a TENT FUCKING CITY in sub freezing weather while being harassed by the police every morning.

Also food stamps are a thing you moron, this is the ONE THING that is most reliably provided for us and it is the only thing you assholes want to give. We don’t want to be pulled away from what is effectively our fucking job so you can get a good feel spending $5 to give us a shitty third rate meal - $5 that could actually do something for us if you were not such a distrustful prick and just gave it to us instead. I’m so very sorry that I want to plan my life more than one meal in advance so I can have just the smallest amount of confidence that I wont be dead by tomorrow morning.

Not one of those signs even says anything about food or being hungry! People are begging for medicine and shelter and work and you offer them a fucking McDouble and large coke. Of course they are going to refuse! And then you use it as an excuse for why those dirty ungrateful poors might actually deserve the treatment they get.

I have no idea what third hand bullshit information you are getting that pan handlers make $5000 a month but it is frankly absurd and insulting. I am legitimately angry. So my friend who has to go out and offer blow jobs on the street to afford her medication is just doing it for fun huh?

I’ve seen the police round ups of the poor who sleep in tents outside the homeless shelter that is filled to capacity. I know that there isn’t half as many beds available as are needed and many homeless shelters are not fit to server the needs of many of the homeless. I know how dangerous it is to live in a tent city.

And get this, I live in a city that is well known nationally for how well we handle our homeless problem.

You and your ‘different perspective’ can go to hell. God knows that if hell exists that is the direction you are headed.
