It’s your turn 🫵 Give me all the deets about Harper’s scar
Funny you should ask, Thorn😏
I once attempted to make a short comic about it,, but became too unsatisfied to continue. Maybe someday I'll get my shit together 😔However...
For the first few months of being a target of Ranrok, Harper felt invincible. She survived a dragon attack, took down a troll practically on her own, and any interaction between herself and Loyalists, Ashwinders, or Poachers left her walking away unscathed. She felt her magic made her untouchable, and subsequently became bolder and bolder.
One evening, while out in Hogsmeade, she attempted to do some good. She tracked a pair of Ashwinders back to their camp in the Forbidden Forest, ready to leave another charred message for Rookwood. But there were more Ashwinders than she'd expected. It only took one to alert the others.
She was outnumbered, and she knew it. Even with the aid of the Peruvian Instant Darkness powder she'd managed to smash on the ground, they were still after her. When one caught her, a boot on her wrist kept her from casting. She expected death, but Rookwood wanted her alive. The Ashwinder had something else in mind; Urerincarem.
Urerincarem, or Deepfire, is a curse (that I made up hehe) occasionally used by Wizarding criminals to mark enemies or keep their extortees in check. Though it's uncommon in English gangs, it's not unheard of. The curse can be afflicted anywhere on the body, but is usually cast on one’s face. The curse loosely translates to “burn into flesh,” and acts as a ticking time bomb, slowly and painfully burning the victim outwards from the casted area. The damage will continue to spread until the counter-curse is performed. However, the curse is volatile and reacts catastrophically if the counter-curse isn’t performed perfectly. Amateur attempts to heal or reduce the pain will cause further damage, irreparable damage. Because of this curse’s nature, the scars obtained from it cannot be removed or healed, except by the passage of time.
Upon the initial moment he spell hit her, she was blinded by pain. The adrenaline coursing through her system caused her ancient magic to react, decimating the area and saving her from further harm. Unfortunately, Harper didn't know why Urerincarem was so feared, so upon her return to Hogwarts, to alleviate the other injuries she'd gotten, she drank some Wiggenweld. The healing potion activated the curse, and her flesh began to bubble.
Luckily, she'd chosen to drink the Wiggenweld in the Undercroft. And luckily, Hogwarts' most curse-knowledgeable Slytherin was by her side when it happened. But it would not be a perfect cure. Harper was left with a burn scar covering the expanse of her right cheek, a reminder of what hubris could bring her.
It took months for Harper's confidence to return. She didn't leave the castle for weeks, not even to go to Hogsmeade.
I've got a whole chapter devoted to it in my fic, mwahahaha 😈 specifically this one
And if Seb hadn't been there... Harper would look very, very different.
