Cyrus is a jumble of contradictions. At times he is painfully insecure, other times, obnoxiously boastful, he can be stubborn as a mule, but also shows moments of almost poetic insight. The few things that can be said about him for sure are 1. He is an exceptionally talented mage, and 2. Give him an inch of attention and he will talk your damn ear off.

During the DA2 endgame, what Anders says to Orsino just before the Chantry explosion, is not “We don’t need Circles!”, not even “We should be free!”, even though this is what you would expect to hear from him.

What he says is “the Circle has failed us”.

He admits that the Circles are probably the only place where a mage can get a decent training. It is, after all, a community of educated people who share the same gift. He recognizes the Circle as a system that was supposed to mean good, that it still can do good, sometimes.

Right now it doesn’t serve its purpose the way it should. It failed. It failed its purpose and failed the mages. It wasn’t meant to harm, but it does now.
