Growing up, I hated my name. No one could say “Aazrin” correctly and I hated my parents for giving me a name that no one could pronounce. I was constantly teased for my sideburns and thick eyebrows and the fact that in elementary school my arms and legs were hairier than those of the boys.
This post is not for the non-brown people running blogs titled “Namaste” claiming that our culture is part of their aesthetic.
This post is for the brown girls and boys who were made fun of for their body and facial hair. For their “unpronounceable” names. For every time they were called “terrorists” by white people who then proceeded to take our culture from us. Desi culture is beautiful, not something to be exploited and now is our time to reclaimthebindi.
