Knowing the North isn't actually in the Arctic circle is horrifying
okay just gonna say this now before i really get into tmk posting: a play is not the right format for how complex this historical event was. a lot of storytelling choices in theatre can be influenced by tiny choices actors make in the moment (not that i'm accusing anyone of anything). also there is direct contradiction of book information so unless GRRM explicitly says so i'm considering this play about as canon as the tv show
don’t rlly care to get into mad king play discourse bc i haven’t seen it and it’s a semi-canon source muddled by format constraints. but i do wonder how much of elia’s perceived support of rhaegar/lyanna is just ye olde ‘laughing at whatever the crackhead (magically schizophrenic husband) says so he doesn’t stab (resentfully sabotage my place at court & my children’s places in the line of succession) me’.
okay mad king play spoilers ahead
i'm actually a fan of Elia's characterization. i've always thought she was as politically shrewd as the rest of her family, and being not in love with Rhaegar is pretty much what i expected. instead of being vengeful/hateful for Lyanna 'stealing her man' she's frustrated Rhaegar is chasing prophecy and forcing her to change her plans on the fly. she works around her husband finding an equally mentally ill/burdened by prophecy person to run away with and thinks "okay, shit, i can work with this. aegon the conqueror part 2". i think this actually gives way more room to speculate about her choices. idk. Elia thoughts
What I’m learning about the ASOIAF fandom is that their brains are so fried by the 15 year gap in books and their headcanons have become so entrenched, that short descriptions of a play they have not even seen, read more like threat than art they’re yet to seriously engage with.
just seen some mad king play spoilers. ough i have thoughts...
Ashara Dayne
if they insist on an aegon’s conquest movie it must have a 25 minute sequence of targs eating shit and losing a dragon to half blind old as dirt Meria Martell’s vietnam war guerilla tactics until they have to back off for 100 years or don’t bother making it
