every modern kdrama romance writer needs to watch the last episode of the east palace and learn from princess saengang and gucheon's dynamic.

SHE makes sure that he is safe and runs off to the spirit hell world to protect his life and end hers to fix this curse.

HE wakes up and immediately slits his throat to reach her.

SHE dies there to make sure that HE won't have to.

HE ends up there and gives her his LIFE to make sure she lives.

SHE immediately wakes up in the real world and RUNS to him and begs that he comes back because how can she lose him?

she then spends DAYS with his DEAD BODY and refuses to believe he's gone, before running to the river to wade into it and beg, screaming, crying for his SPIRIT even to return to her, no matter what form it takes. it's unfathomable for her to live without him.

he then wakes up and she engulfs him in a hug and then instead of staying at court or living as a princess, leaves with him for more adventures.

this is the dynamic i want from my romances. i don't want half-assed one sided nonsense. i want a princess who has never once received respect, meeting this strange ghost seeing orphan man, who calls her "princess" with more warmth than anything else, and whom she fights her own father, the king, hell, and the universe to bring back to her.

and mind you, this was not a fully or even slightly romantic drama, by any means at all. and they served SO much!

the east palace may have some of the best cinematography i've seen in a kdrama in ages? perhaps the best ever?? absolutely stunning cinematic shots, and the use of colors, and the saturation of scenes and the fact that you can see!! all the night scenes!!!!! the art of lighting and color grading are not lost here people!!!!

in all honesty though, i could watch another eight episodes of our ghost hunters just.. traveling together and bickering and ghost hunting. they're adorable. the way they come to care for each other, from being reluctant allies to literally sacrificing themselves for each other, is so nicely done. and they are constantly saving each other throughout the show, be it saeng-gang jumping into the ghost realm, or gu-cheon giving himself up to the gwi-mae. which is exactly the kind of dynamic i dig, sooo. plus points there.

and !!!! ggeomeoksali !!!! the real mvp of the show. i love this little creacher so much i will be rewatching its bits now, thank you.

I love how the entire aroace community latched onto Ryland Grace with no hesitation and have used his character as an outlet for frustrations regarding real-world politics surrounding our identities.

Dr. Ryland Grace was arguably the perfect backup candidate for his mission. Stratt got that right. He had no children, no life partner, no family, not even a dog. All he had was his students and that was enough for him, but that made him replaceable.

Right?

Not only were Grace’s wishes completely ignored, his life and his value as a person was undermined. Simply because he had no one but his students to care for his wellbeing, because he wouldn’t have someone at home waiting for him to come back.

Aroace people deal with similar treatment simply because romance and sex are seen as essential to the human experience, completely disregarding any and all other types of connection. One’s inherent value as a person is not lost when they choose to live life without romantic or sexual relationships. One’s value is simply in existing.

Aroace people know this well, which is why so many have become so attached to Ryland as a character. Many of us see his way of life as the end goal for ourselves, so any one of us would have been seen as just as dispensable, by Stratt and by society as a whole.

Aroace people love Dr. Ryland Grace because his life mattered just as much as everyone else’s, and so do ours.
