Manchurian maple. Acer tegmentosum.
I did something I have never done before yesterday; I straight up asked a person if I could collect something from their plants.
I was visiting my parents yesterday and down the road from their house I was stopped by this gorgeous Japanese Maple in the prime of it’s autumn colors. We went in the back and asked the kind old couple who owned the house if they wouldn’t mind me taking “about 20 or so small leaves” and they were happy to let me do so.
So, look forward to these cute Japanese Maple leaves in the autumn leaf lineup in a couple weeks!
This spectacular new species of katydid (Eulophophyllum kirki) was discovered in 2016 while researchers were looking for tarantulas and snakes in Borneo.

Plant of the Day Wednesday 27 September 2017
Centaurea calcitrapa (star thistle, caltrap, mouse thorn) is a biennial or short lived perennial native to southern Europe, it produces prolific seeds and can be invasive of floodplains, dry forests, and grasslands. The plant thrives in a well-drained soil and can grow in areas of low nutrients and very alkaline conditions.

Tobacco Hornworms have black dots outlining their white stripes and have red horns. When they become Hawk Moths, they have six dots on their wings. Tomato Hornworms become Hawk Moths with five dots. They are all over my Puerto Rican Mountain Tobacco plants and my Cape Goose Berries right now. Many have been parasitized by Braconid Wasps, which paralyze with a sting, then lay eggs (cocoons) that will hatch, and whose babies will feed on the worm. Also, as you can see in the final photos, perhaps this traffic jam is the reason for the rear-end horns? To keep faster munchers at knife-point while you eat as slow as you’d like? #braconidwasp #tobaccohornworm #Manducasexta @ Delaware County, Pennsylvania

For the goth gardener, black plants abound. You need not look far to find sinister, occluded elements to this most innocuous of activities.
I planted black hollyhock and irises this year!
A+ content important I would also suggest soft goth things such as
blackbird euphorbia (maybe tender here maybe niagara goths can have u)
black negligee bugbane
chocoholic bugbane (tbh all bugbane is prolific and spoopy and wonderful)
hellebore black swan maybe also tender?
black truffle cardinal flower
the ever fave heuchera obsidian
britt marie crawford ligularia FAVE JURASSIC LOOKING BB
and obv purple smokebush for soft goth smoke monster vibes
thank the dark goddess for you! Saving this post!
Black pearl pepper is another good one, I can attest that they look really cool in person. Aside from being ornamental, the little peppers are edible, and I think decently hot? I haven’t tasted them though so idk about that part
Black Pearl plants are EXTREMELY drought hardy and the peppers taste great, yes! I love mine even though I’ve given it less than stellar care; I’ve had it for…almost 10 years I think!
These pictures are so cute and so is the article.
Black Mondo grass also.
Also this is a tropical moat places but bat flower/ Tacca chantieri
Bat flower
I really recommend any of the darker varieties of Sedum telephium, and its pretty much hardy most places.
