All Quiet on the Western Front (the original book) was written by a German WWI veteran who was determined to show just how utterly horrifying, disgusting, and senseless the war- and by extension all war- was. The book and its adaptations take great pains to portray the suffering endured by the common soldiers on both sides, who didn't even really want to fight but were manipulated/forced into it by those in power. The book was even banned in Nazi Germany and the author had to flee the country because the Nazis believed the book was “anti-German” and would hamper their war efforts by showing the German people the real horrors of war.

So in some ways I guess history is repeating itself, more right-wing idiots are hating on this brilliant piece of anti-war media 🙄

lot of people in these notes are assuming that this is the result of psychiatric abuse, or that i must have only ever been treated by "bad psychiatrists" rather than the mythic good psychiatrist. but i've never met anyone who took antipsychotics (even short term) and had no ill effects. and i'm not anti med for myself at all. i'm still on antipsychotics, because having gone off them, i know that i never want to experience unmedicated life again. and yes, i have been psychiatrically abused and locked up and forced to take medications i didn't want, but it isn't just that. there are no good options when you're dealing with paranoid delusions and extreme energy states that make you unable to keep yourself and people around you safe. you either get hit by a car because you wander out into the middle of the road convinced the world is a simulation, or you take 10 different pills a day and accept the sacrifice of your physical health.

Polypharmacy is extremely fucking common. Overprescription is extremely fucking common. It's not "having a bad psychiatrist." I met a guy with "normal depression" who had fucking major permanent organ damage from trying to treat it.

Yes yes thank you. People thinking this doesn’t apply to depression and anxiety and adhd. So many of the people I met in the wards just had depression or ptsd and while they’re less stigmatized by name they were still being forcibly medicated. The meds that gave me seizures were antidepressants
