Autistic People and Moving Home: A Systematic Review
so this is one I’ve already gone through and analyzed, but I wanted to rewrite it in a softer, more approachable way and just share what’s actually in the article itself.
Basically, the authors went looking for research on what it’s like for autistic adults to move home… and found almost nothing. Out of a large pool of studies, only a handful were even remotely relevant, and none of them directly focused on the actual experience of moving.
What *does* exist mostly talks about independent living in general. Across those studies, both autistic adults and caregivers tend to see independence as a positive thing—more control, more space, more ability to shape your own life. It’s something a lot of people want, and something caregivers often want *for* their loved ones too.
But it’s not simple at all. The same research keeps pointing to big barriers, especially around money, employment, and access to the right kind of housing. Even when the desire for independence is there, actually making it happen can be really difficult.
From the caregiver side, there’s a mix of hope and worry running through everything. Wanting independence, but also worrying about safety, daily living, and whether the available support systems are actually good enough. There’s also a lot of stress around just navigating housing in general—it’s often confusing and hard to access.
Another thing the article points out is that autistic adults aren’t always the main ones making decisions about where they live, especially when more support is needed. That tension between support and autonomy comes up a lot, even if it’s not always directly addressed.
The overall takeaway is kind of bittersweet. Independent living is often seen as meaningful and important, but it’s very dependent on support, resources, and individual needs—and it’s not the right path for everyone. And most importantly, we still don’t really understand the *moving process itself* at all.
So the paper ends on a pretty clear note: this is something we need way more research on, because moving is a huge life transition, and right now it’s basically an unanswered question.
