Who else didn’t know that british people call their money pound sterlings. I thought it was simply pounds. I feel like trying to unpeel the etymology of “pound sterlings” would probably make my brain crumble

Silver and other precious metals used to be valued by how much time it took, on average, to obtain that amount of metal, hence pound (of) sterling.
