Their Moana is very talented, and their Maui is a local newscaster whose daughters made him audition!

Rachel House still voices Grandma Tala, Temuera Morrison still voices the Chief, and Jemaine Clement still voices Tamatoa.

Rob Ruha and Jemaine Clement translated and rearranged the music so that the songs still worked while sung in a different language, which is super impressive.

Also: Air New Zealand will feature the Maori version on their in flight entertainment starting in November!

The oldest millennials right now are 35. They were born in 1982 and turned 18 in the year 2000.

Gen Z started in the late 90′s or 2000, depending on your opinion.

But for certain, if you were born after 2000, YOU ARE NOT A MILLENNIAL.

The youngest millennials are just about 18 years old right now if you end the Millennial Generation in 2000.

18-35. We are your millennials.

“Younger millennials” are actually Gen Z.

Millennials are full-grown fucking adults in their twenties and thirties!!!

Hi from beyond where the sky meets the sea

digging thru my drafts and found this really old writeup of after watching Moana...my 2c...since i always gripe about not putting my reviews out more...

Ok, getting this out of the way: yes I liked this better than Frozen. Okay no more comparing.

So Moana is a simple adventure/epic story, fairly linear and not too many sidetracks that keep the pace of the film going well, imo. So it passes my “ok, decent movie” bar with that. What really makes this movie so magical is:

1) the use of culture in the story! Not used as a background/“unique factor” but really influenced the story. I went to the Polynesia cultural center like nearly 2 years ago, and it was such a wonderful eye opener to Polynesia culture. So to experience it in movie was even MORE wonderful. It was beautiful, and I looked up articles on how the community worked with them on it and their criticisms, and I think it was generally respectful and still appealing to outside eyes as well. I am sure that there will be some criticisms, so do make sure to listen with open ears and understand how to treat things that are treasured by others.

2) the music!!! Yeah, I’m in love. I’m listening thru a lot of the older soundtracks and I think Lin-Manuel did really well. It could be a style preference, but something about…maybe because it has some great themes throughout that is well used and catchy, easy to sing, and easy to hear. Plus cutting out weird kinda pop culture references that I feel broke up some of the other past songs. Plus strengths of using choirs! Something about the simplicity of it makes the characters come fully fleshed out, vs just some smashing music number. Omg. I could go on. But I shadn’t.

Those are my main points but throwing in a 3rd: 3) none of that “hey this is a feminist movie because she doesn’t end up with a prince! Even tho we spend all the movie talking about how she didn’t.” Aka ppl talked smack about Cinderella and Ariel’s love stories (which, I still think are strong characters despite people’s watered-down memories,) so Disney came out with girls who weren’t defined by their love story but it was still a major topic or catalyst for the entire movie *coughfrozenandbravecough*. Moana is just Moana. She has her adventure regardless of her gender or sexuality.
