tate looked at her like he wasn’t sure if that was a true statement or not. he didn’t want to make anyone upset. “i don’t want to make him sad if i’m not there. he should be his happiest on his wedding day.”

the question takes him by surprise. see? again, not equipped for this. daniel sighs, really pauses to think about it. “well, if this person is now my friend,” he starts, “i guess i would go. it would feel awkward, sure, but not unbearable if i see them only as a friend. i wouldn’t want to potentially upset a friend on their wedding day.”
a long sigh left tate’s lips, because he guess he was pretty right. “i don’t want to upset him if i don’t come. we’re pretty close,” he said, running his fingers through his hair. “and i do like weddings. their so nice, y’know? i think i’ve cried at every single one i’ve been to. do you cry at weddings?”

finn was surprised by the sudden motions, but didn’t hesitate to grab the sweater. he unbuttoned his own shirt, and, once it was off all the way, he extended it to tate. “thank you, thank you, thank you!” finn cried out, patting the other guy on the shoulder. “here, take my money! buy yourself an ice cream, a new car, i don’t care! just buy yourself something.” he reached into the pocket of his jeans and took out the five dollars, throwing it towards the other man.
tate took finn’s shirt and start to put it on himself, though he decided to just leave it unbuttoned for now. “it’s no problem, really. i don’t want you feeling bad while you’re walking around,” he told him sweetly. “oh, no. i don’t want your money!” tate told him as he tried to give the bill back to him. “this is nothing. you don’t owe me anything, i promise.”

harley managed to maintain his look of hurt through tate’s change of heart. the water actually helped dampen his allergies, but tate could live without that knowledge a little while longer. “nope, i’m puffing out literally right now,” he said, wiggling sudsy, demonstrative fingers at tate. “just kidding, you baby, it’d take more than soap to kill me. but i am pruning.” harley shook his head, the ghost of a grin betraying his pretend-disappointment. he started to get up, only pausing to shoot tate a look. “and that sounds dangerous? how do you even fall– never mind.” maybe it was a writer thing, or just a tate thing. “if i go out to grab dry towels, can i trust you to stay awake and hold back the kraken?” his gaze slanted towards lolli.
tate let out a relieved sigh when harley said he was just kidding. he really thought he was going to accidentally hurt his friend, and it would have made him feel horrible. “i’m turning too,” tate said as he scrunched up his nose, going to wiggle his fingers in front of harley for a second. they were all prune-y as well, making his hands look a little more grandpa like. “what! baths are soothing and warm... i had a couple glasses of wine too, okay? i was sleepy.” he was lucky he didn’t cause any really bad damage there. tate huffed at the nickname of their cat and went to grab her, holding her in his lap. “how can you call her a kraken? she looks so adorable right now!”

theo sighed when he noticed tate’s facial expression and put his phone down properly. “listen, tate,” he said, trying to be somewhat comforting. “if you feel like you’re gonna have fun and not feel like shit, just go. like, maybe it’ll be cool. but just, like, make sure you’re not gonna regret it afterwards. cause, like… it’s still your ex. and yes,” he smirked a little, breaking the seriousness of the conversation a little. “those dance moves will definitely stun him. i mean, you learned from the best! and those moves are all your work, by the way. you have, like, some talent in you, dude.”
“it’s hard to say whether or not i’ll feel crappy though. how am i supposed to know until i get there?” tate sighed, almost dramatically. really, he’s never felt so conflicted in his life. to go or not to go, that is the question. why couldn’t it have a simple answer. even if he was feeling overwhelmed though he couldn’t help but laugh a little. “just some,” he repeated, smiling and shaking his head. “i can’t contribute any of it to myself. you’ve helped me so much. i don’t think i’d be too good if you weren’t around to guide me, honestly.”

After weather delays and well poorly planned invites, Mari had decided this weekend was the weekend. Eva hadn’t seen their backyard all day and she did not mind being curled up inside with her parents after they treated her to breakfast. When Mari and her boyfriend Sean had finished decorating Eva was allowed to see their handy work. the Happy Birthday banner and eating utensils were the mermaid touches everything else Mari could find had the Slytherin theme she wanted and it looked amazing. The cake was inside as were the snacks. She wasn’t allowed to set anything up, as much as she wanted to help. She was told, her birthday party she was here to enjoy it not work. She could greet everyone when they arrived, which was at any moment.
tate loved birthday parties. he loved all the decorations, the silly party hats, birthday cake, and all of the presents. getting presents was probably one of his favorite things to do, and he was always tempted to buy people random things just because he liked presents so much. so going to eva’s birthday party made him super, super excited. he showed up with a tiny wrapped box and then a long, poster like sized present. when he arrived he sought eva out immediately, grinning at her with a bright smile. “happy birthday!!!” he exclaimed.

“thanks, man,” sawyer said with a smile. he wasn’t sure if he was ready to every one of his little secrets to tate, but this was sure to help, he thought. just knowing someone was there was doing wonders for his state of mind. leading tate into the pet establishment, he asked the worker if they could pet a few of the cats, and soon enough, they were surrounded by all kinds of cats.
tate would be there if he wanted to talk about them though, and that’s all that mattered. he was a good listener, but also good at distracting people as well. cats were a great distraction. his heart melted as the worker brought out a few cats for them to play with. “oh, sawyer, you’re going to have to stop me from taking all of them home!” he exclaimed as his hands went to try to pet all of them.

“something that really shows your ex what they’re missing out on.” mariana said, digging her phone out of her pocket. she pulled up her instagram and scrolled for a moment, tapping on a photo of herself in a gold dress and showing tate. “i wore this to my ex’s wedding. she just about shit her pants when she saw me.” she grinned. “as for arm candy, take a friend!”
tate gasped slightly when he saw the other’s dress. “you look stunning. you probably looked better than her,” he said with a teasing voice, but he was sure he was right. that dress was so nice! “i guess i’m in need of a new suit...” tate bit his lip at the mention of a friend and hummed. “i don’t think i could ask any of my friends to go. none of them would behave.”

harley laughed, an unholy, gleeful sound, and he kept laughing until bath soap was suddenly in his mouth. “oh my god,” he sputtered, hacking it out and prompting a small hiss from a particular cat caught in the crossfire. harley swiped at his eyes, glaring at tate across the tub. “tate. this soap,” he began indignantly, scooping more up and shoving them at tate’s face in return, “this water, they’ve touched a cat, are you trying to kill me.” he landed a particularly satisfying one right on top of tate’s hair, but the cost was a sizeable wave of bath water that sloshed and spilled out.
it prompted harley to pause mid-vengeance to check over the side of the tub. the towels padding the floor were visibly soaked through. “i think we’re flooding your bathroom.”
tate’s eyes widened as harley spit out some of the bubbles that ended up in his mouth. for a moment tate really had forgotten that harley was allergic to cats. and there definitely was a cat in here. the glare he gave him made tate feel awful, and he gasped. he didn’t even care that he got more bubbles in his face. “harley! no! i don’t want to kill you!” he said, going to reach out and grab the other’s elbow. “oh my god, are you okay? you’re not like... puffing up or anything? oh no, i don’t want to my friend.” the poor boy was genuinely worried.
tatelooked out of the tub and there was a lot of water. “it’s okay. the floor is sturdy. i accidentally overflowed the tub before because i fell asleep in it while i was running water.”

“huh,” oakley said, before shrugging and opening the wallet. he pulled out a driver’s license and saw a name and face he didn’t recognize even in the slightest. “do you know this person?” he asked the other, holding the card up.
tate squinted his eyes as he looked at the person on the card. “ummm... maybe? looks slightly familiar. she looks like the woman who lives beneath my apartment, but it’s not her..” tate hummed. “we should go try to find them.”

“i think you should go, and look better than whoever it is they’re marrying,” jace said bluntly with a shrug. “show ‘em what they’re missing. did you just get a save the date? or a real-deal invite?”
the thought of showing up looking stunning and more beautiful than the bride had tate chuckling softly. “she’s gorgeous. i don’t think i could compare,” he said with a laugh. “both. i just got the save the date in the mail the other day, but when they got engaged he facetimed me and we talked about it for like, two hours. i think he even considered making me one of his groomsmen. i’m so glad he didn’t.”

with every word tate says daniel feels less and less like he should be giving advice on the matter. he can’t think of a similar situation to empathize better with the boy. he can, of course, but that’s in the field of imagination and not true experience. “well,” he starts, “then i think you gotta ask yourself what’s gonna bother you more. not going and missing the celebration or going and feeling weird.”
tate scrunched up his nose and slightly frowned at his suggestion, nodding though because he knew he was right. he’d been trying to do that, but he just found himself stumped. “what would you do?”

“You could just ask a friend. Or download a dating app. Probably hire somebody weird from Craiglist. The first option being the safest of all, obviously – absolutely wouldn’t recommend Craigslist,” Fawn clarified, generally nonplussed as she pushed hair behind her ear. “You also, uh – I mean. I know I’m not being entirely helpful. But. You know, you really don’t have to do anything you’re uncomfortable with. You can just say that, like, your grandma is sick and you can’t make it or something. There are, uh. More amicable ways to deal with it.”
tate tilted his head in thought, thinking of friends he could ask. he would feel weird asking any of them though, since they didn’t even know his ex. it was such a weird task too. hey, be my date to the wedding but like, not really as my date but just as moral support. and going on a dating also seemed like it wasn’t his thing. he’s never been on one before, he wouldn’t even know where to start. “there’s actually some interesting and nice people you can find on craigslist. when i travel sometimes i go do some weird jobs that are listed there and meet some nice people.” though it really wasn’t the safest thing in the world. tate frowned and shook his head. “i wouldn’t want to lie. i really do want to go i’m just.. nervous. i want to see his sister though, i miss her.”

“Don’t go, I don’t care how well intentioned that person seems, you do not go.” Maia said sternly to Tate. “It’s a set up. You’ll always feel bad no matter how happy you feel.”
tate let out a big sigh, going to brush his fingers through his hair anxiously. “you really think i shouldn’t go? i mean, he’s one of my good friends. i think he’d like it if i was there...” but it would make him just a little sad.

“I heard someone else say it before, can’t take credit,” Solomon told Tate, but pride surged in his chest anyway at the waterfall of giggles. He’d caused them, regardless. “Well, you should probably try to do that. I mean, if it’s your job and all. Unless you want to do something else. At least one of us should chase our dreams. And, you know what? If traveling is your dream, you should just do it. Fuck capitalism!” He declared, banging his beer on the table. He was hardly tipsy, but it didn’t take much for his life’s frustrations to spill out.
tate flinched slightly as the other slammed his beer down on the table, but another laugh left his lips. “yeah, fuck capitalism,” he repeated, “but i do like having one place to live. for now, at least. i’m young, there’s so much more time to go travel around.” he had a plan. travel for a long, long time, and then settle down when he was older. “hey, we should both accomplish our dreams. what do you want to do, sol?”

“look, at least you have a long shirt that will cover the tear in my pants!” he argued, pointing to the other man’s sweater. “my shirt was not meant to be untucked, calvin klein would snipe me on sight if he caught me doing anything but a tuck or french tuck.” he could feel tears welling in his eyes from the embarrassment. “please, i’ll give you anything, i’ve got five dollars in my wallet… i just, i need some new pants!”
tate looked down at his sweater, realizing just now that it was pretty big on him. it actually swallowed him up, and that was totally his style. cozy, big, and warm. “oh! you don’t have to give me anything,” tate told him, and then he was taking off his sweater. it was a little chilly outside, but he didn’t mind the cold that much. standing there, now bare chested, he held out the sweater. “here you go!”

“don’t go, duh,” theo said, putting down his phone and looking tate in the eye. “i mean, i don’t know how bad the breakup was, but if they’re anything like my exes, just, like… do not,” he sighed. “if you do go, make sure to absolutely stunt on them. like, you have to look better than everyone else there, because otherwise… what is the point?” finally, something theo could have a proper conversation about. this was great.
tate was already looking back at the other when he looked up from his phone. his brown eyes were so soft and just full of confusion. he was really stumped on what to do. “it wasn’t bad,” he started, “he just... he just said he fell for another person. and now he’s marrying that person. really, i’m happy for him. i only want to see him happy, which is why i want to go but...” but it still hurt. “i can show them all the dance moves i’ve learned from you. that’ll stun them.”
