Fire and Thorns

Prompt for the Keep the Flame Alive event! @toarisetheflame

Your skin burns when you touch it You may not feel it, but your hands are red, blistered Orange flames lick the side of your face You are a fighter With a weapon no one else can wield You may not know your past but you know your future You fight for freedom As your mentor before you You arise Their skin burns when they touch you Purple electric vines surround them The pain from your thorns is red hot, seering You are a fighter  Your weapon is your curse   You may not know your future but you know your past You fight to stop evil Even if the evil is you  You arise Fire and thorns The man who can’t feel pain And the woman who inflicts it The journey you will go on is long, taxing The odds are against you But despite it all You arise

His Fire, Her Thorns

(Ficlet. This is best seen as originally posted as a Twitter/X thread, but I'm also posting here for better archiving.)

For the Keep the Flame Alive event (@toarisetheflame) Day 2: "Fire and Thorns," Alphen and Shionne week

His fire burned through the soldiers, then through the lords. Hope sprung from the ashes.

He couldn't wield the fire without her.

Her thorns lashed at others, teaching her to do the same. Better to hurt them a little with words than with her curse.

He wasn't scared of her thorns, nor was he fazed by her lashing.  His fire had warmed her; he knew when he felt her hand.

After the mask of ignorance shattered, her thorns finally whipped him away.  Then pulled her into the abyss.

He couldn't wield the fire without her. What was he without his fire? Without her?

The only way to get her back was to push past her thorns. Moments of agony, but nothing compared to all of her life.

He pulled her out of the abyss with a promise, that her thorns would be his too.

They could only wield the fire together, the fire that was destined to be theirs.

There was one more layer of thorns to get past. All this time she had wanted to burn her thorns away, along with herself.

Until his fire warmed her. He made another promise, and hope sprung from the ashes.

At the very end, their fire burned through their thorns, and left behind two ordinary people in love.

The thorns were gone, and they didn't need the fire anymore.
