Second trans man weighing in here. I also have been pregnant, a total of three times. The first resulted in the birth of my daughter, and I knew I was trans before getting pregnant. After having her we realized that my window for having the second child that we wanted was closing because my dysphoria was getting worse and worse and I ended up having a miscarriage at 8 weeks, which sucked, and then a miscarriage at 22 weeks, which as devastating because 1) 22 weeks was a fucking long time to fight through dysphoria only for a pregnancy to fail, 2) i knew that my dysphoria was bad enough that I could never put myself through this again, so our dream of having 2 kids was over and 3) my temporary physicianâs refusal to listen to me when I said that I would never be pregnant again and to please schedule me for a d&c was flat out ignored because she was certain Iâd change my mind and decide to have another baby and wouldnât let me do anything that wasnât let the tissue pass naturally, which is unfortunate because my body straight up hung onto it for six fucking months. I spent half a year that I desperately wanted to be considering a plan for transitioning going in for weekly blood tests to measure my levels, of having people, doctors, nurses, blood lab technicians telling me that it was okay, Iâd âget to be a mommy againâ as soon as this was all cleared up.
So much of having children is centred around being a mother, being a woman, the gift of motherhood. I hated every second of that, and that was all anyone could talk about through all of it. But you know what? I still had a baby. What would you have me do? Pretend I didnât? Throw either myself or my husband under the bus every time someone asks how we managed to acquire a baby? How our family exists? Who do I devalue? Whose contribution is less important? Who has to pretend that theyâre not genetically related to our child, who gets the credit for how fucking hard it was to bring her into this world, into a family that loves her more than anything?
Pregnancy was not easy, and it was even harder because of my dysphoria. I sacrificed a LOT to make our family happen, and I would rather be counted among âpregnant peopleâ than âpregnant womenâ, and I certainly donât want to hide my hard fucking work to make others feel comfortable.

Around comes motherâs day. Iâm up in the morning, probably didnât go to bed yet. She comes over and wishes me a happy motherâs day. I made kinda an awkward smile and wished her one as well.

But everything regarding pregnancy being automatically woman-oriented was incredibly hard for me to deal with whilst facing dysphoria. âSo few trans men do it that thereâs no need to change the language!â - bullshit. Changing the language we use regarding pregnancy and childbirth does no harm to women at all and helps those of us who arenât women. It doesnât have any negative outcome. It is literally just including everyone. If youâre against that, your transphobia is showing.

Educator at a school for teen parents. We have several teen dads here as well as teen moms, and one of those dads gave birth to his daughter himself. Within a couple weeks of his enrollment, weâd changed our languageâ maternity leave became parental leave, nursing mothers became nursing parents, etc.
It took so little effort to make this change. It caused no problems for anyone. A pregnant woman who is referred to as a pregnant person is not going to be insulted because she is a person. Inclusive doesnât mean changing from one thing to another, it means a change that encompasses more things.
Women are people. Mothers are parents. Get over it.

Agree that pregnant trans and nonbinary people are not women, but also MINORS are not WOMEN. We need to stop implying that a 14 yr old is magically an adult if impregnated.

Consent to sex is not consent to pregnancy.
Consenting to sex does not mean youâre also consenting to anything and everything that could possibly result from sex, including pregnancy or STIâs.
It means youâre consenting to sex. Period.
And even then your consent can be conditional (e.g. you consent only if a condom is used) and can be revoked at any time. Just as your consent to carry a pregnancy can be revoked at any time.
Consent is not a one time decision that is set in stone and you canât go back on it. Consent must be informed, freely given, and ongoing.
By the way, The Bed Trick in media i(Where Bob has sex with Alice by pretending to be Carol) s called Rape By Fraud or Rape by Deception. Itâs one of the two main situations that crime covers.

Trans men can and do have their own children pre, mid and post transition, and weâre far more common than you seem to think we are. Donât speak on our behalf, especially when weâre loudly telling you to stay in your own lane.

But like, itâs unfair to ask men to be more involved in child rearing without allowing the men who can carry babies have kids. Or allowing them to, but calling them mothers. It reminds me of how stigmatized men are for taking care of kids. Or hell, even calling them âmommy dadsâ or whatever.
We know trans men exist. And we should acknowledge their masculinity despite whatever parts they may have. And just like what we should expect from any other man in 2017, we should expect men to be able to do an equal amount of child rearing as possible, and that can include carrying the baby if they have a womb.

After coming back into state to stay with my wifeâs âfamilyâ (we donât call them that now, but we did at the time due to being related) until we could get a place. We were there most of my pregnancy and when I legally changes my documents.
It was her âfatherâ, his wife, and their 3 kids.
Around comes motherâs day. Iâm up in the morning, probably didnât go to bed yet. She comes over and wishes me a happy motherâs day. I made kinda an awkward smile and wished her one as well.
Later she tells my wife she didnât even think before saying it (no shit)

Trans man here with a 6 day old infant who was planned and much wanted and deeply loved. We exist in far far greater numbers than people seem to think. A lot of trans men want to have families the same as everyone else and a lot of us do. I have the equipment so I used it and Iâm very glad I did. But everything regarding pregnancy being automatically woman-oriented was incredibly hard for me to deal with whilst facing dysphoria. âSo few trans men do it that thereâs no need to change the language!â - bullshit. Changing the language we use regarding pregnancy and childbirth does no harm to women at all and helps those of us who arenât women. It doesnât have any negative outcome. It is literally just including everyone. If youâre against that, your transphobia is showing.
As a trans man who does find the possibility of pregnancy intensely dysphoric, I absolutely prefer âpregnant peopleâ to âpregnant women.â I also prefer gender neutral language surrounding birth control for people who can get pregnant, because that is what I am. There might not be as many trans men who want to have babies, but if you donât want to get pregnant, then the conversation switches to birth control. Everything about womenâs reproductive health is framed as womenâs reproductive health, even if youâre a man.
So no, theyâre not pregnant women. Theyâre pregnant people. These are not feminine hygiene products. Theyâre menstrual products. This is not female birth control. Itâs birth control, and itâs mine.
Nonbinary, been pregnant five times, have three living children. Have been a doula and childbirth educator in the past and dedicated most of my adult life to issues around pregnancy, childbearing, breastfeeding, babywearing and parenting.
Gender inclusive language is a must.
Educator at a school for teen parents. We have several teen dads here as well as teen moms, and one of those dads gave birth to his daughter himself. Within a couple weeks of his enrollment, weâd changed our languageâ maternity leave became parental leave, nursing mothers became nursing parents, etc.
It took so little effort to make this change. It caused no problems for anyone. A pregnant woman who is referred to as a pregnant person is not going to be insulted because she is a person. Inclusive doesnât mean changing from one thing to another, it means a change that encompasses more things.
Women are people. Mothers are parents. Get over it.

Hi. This seems very sincere and from a very well intentioned place. It also, however, comes across as very niave and uninformed. I donât say that to be mean or insulting, only to specify that while I believe your heart is in the right place, you donât have the facts of the situation. This post is going to be lengthy, but only because I believe you deserve a chance to understand.
The simple truth is that restrictions on abortion are, by definition, *not* leaving women and minorities alone. Abortion restrictions, by their very nature, are an attack on the safety and legal standing of anyone who can get pregnant.
The disconnect youâre having here is that you arenât stopping to consider *why* abortion is the choice some people make, and what harm happens when that choice is taken away. You arenât thinking about the ways in which abortion is harm reduction, or the ways in which its access protects people who have the ability to become pregnant from some very very serious abuse and exploitation.
The ability to become pregnant makes us uniquely vulnerable. It means that an act of violence against us, an unlucky experience with some contraceptives, or even a wanted pregnancy that is medically unviable can instantly endanger our physical, emotional, mental, and financial safety. The ways in which an unplanned pregnancy can trap people in unsafe situations or inhibit their ability stay safe.
There are many situations where a person who is already in a bad situation becoming pregnant can make that situation much much worse- even deadly. Homicide (often by an intimate partner) is the number 1 cause of death for pregnant people in the United States after all. If youâre in an abusive relationship, an unplanned pregnancy can make leaving far riskier and more logistically complicated. It can increase the frequency or intensity of that abuse. If you are assaulted, the person who assaulted you *doesnt* automatically lose parental rights to any resulting child- even if that puts you at continued risk of abuse.
Pregnancy can trigger extreme dysphoria and other mental health issues for folks. It can trigger serious physical health issues. It can mean you arenât supposed to continue the use the prescribed medications for serious health conditions. (Weâve already seen cases of people being taken to court over miscarriages because of medication they had been taking.) We have seen people be told their chemotherapy has to be delayed because of a pregnancy- decisions that killed those people.
Abortion bans, even with exceptions for the health of the pregnant person, slows care for people who are experiencing pregnancy loss. We are already seeing horrific cases of medical neglect here in Texas as hospitals tell people going through miscarriages that they have to *wait* until they are *more sick* to get treatment- closer to sepsis, closer to permanent infertility or disability, closer to death themselves- before they can recieve care because legally its that grey area.
And fundamentally, restrictions on abortion are an attack on our personhood under the law. They say that if you become pregnant, your body, your organs, your blood and bones- they are no longer yours as long as that pregnancy is happening. This fundamental legal fact is imposed on no one else in our society. In no other situation is another person (and Iâm fine saying that a fetus is legally a person) entitled to use your organs against your will.
To be clear, the argument here isnât âits OK to kill a fetus because of its age.â The argument is that âno person, regardless of age, is entitled to the physical organs of another without consent, even if withholding or withdrawing access to that other personâs body will lead to their death.â Itâs âunwanted pregnancy can fall into the realm of self defense, and a person is legally allowed to protect themselves from harm with potentially deadly means if necessary.â Itâs âthere are very good and legitimate reasons for abortion sometimes but the only people who should be able to make that call are the pregnant person with the consultation of their doctor.â Itâs âpregnancy and abortion are deeply intimate issues and the choice to carry or abort a pregnancy should not be left up to Ted Cruz.â
Reread your own post. Notice how nowhere in it do you mention the people who are actually pregnant when talking about consideration and rights. Think about who you are and arenât thinking about here.
Look, I understand. Itâs sad that the fetus dies. Iâm not asking you to celebrate that. But the way to actually help is to champion causes that EXPAND options for people, that give people more choices so that fewer choose abortion. Because taking options away will only ever hurt people. Champion socialized health care and guaranteed paid parental leave, subsidized prenatal care and child care, expanded protections for domestic abuse and sexual assault survivors, easier affordable access to contraceptives and plan b. Those things- which consider what circumstances can make abortion the choice people chose and providing support- are going to do far far far more good in the world than abortion bans ever could. Abortion bans are not just a less good option, they are actively harmful and hostile to those who can get pregnant.
I want you to consider the ways in which prioritizing the beginning of life over living peopleâs quality of life can and does cause harm. That prioritizing getting a fetus to term over the health and safety of already living people can and does cause suffering. Itâs a quantity of life over a quality of life mindset that ignores and causes suffering and pain. And I would argue that it is a moral evil to say âitâs good to make people suffer if that suffering leads to more people being born.â
Never forget that forced pregnancy is considered a crime against humanity by the UN. Think about why.
Again, I donât think you are a bad person or an evil person for what you have said here. But I do think your lack of nuance and awareness on this topic is causing you to support legislation and politicians that is hurting a lot of people.
It's honestly so interesting how many of those prolife folks kept trying to compare the issue of bodily autonomy to like...property or resources or an object or money or even just the time/labor to care for someone else.
Is it...is it something about how they see the body as separate from the soul? That like...your body is just something your soul uses, and not like... *you* on a very fundamental level?
Because just over and over again, having to explain that *no*, your organs are not like... having to spend money on baby formula? No, your organs are not like a house you are the landlord of. No, just because an infant needs to be given food doesn't mean it's violating your bodily autonomy.
Is that why they aren't bothered with the idea of your body being legally treated as an object that can be given to someone else? Because they already think of their body as an object that their soul just happens to be chilling in?
What a neat thought! I havenât seen very many folks talking about their views of their bodies-- whether solely as a vehicle for the soul or as part of an integrated whole. I feel like the primary issue is that people on the pro-life side of things consider children in the womb the same as children out of the womb. If it was possible to tell at what point a personâs soul entered their body (if thereâs such a point instead of them just being intertwined from the very start) it would probably clear the debate up a bit.
I really don't think it would. Because you just can't prove the existence of a soul to start with. And then at what point does ensouling occur? Conception itself? Because with natural identical twins the ball of cells formed by the conception split to form 2 potential babies. Does the soul split too? Or is 1 soulless? How could anyone detect the soul or lack of it?
What about chimeras? 2 eggs fertilised by 2 sperms. So 2 separate conceptions with a soul each. But while still a ball of cells the 2 combine into 1. And a singular infant develops with a genetic mosiac of both. Do chimeras have 2 souls or is one ousted at the blending process?
Traditionally in different cultures the potential infant gains a soul at different points in the pregnancy process. Quickening, about 5 months into the pregnancy, when the foetal kicking and stuff can be felt. Or at first breath, so only actually after being born.
As others have noted in the blog chain natural spontaneous abortion occurs in a high number of pregnancies. The idea the women are just nurturing wombs creating and cradling baby after baby flies in the face of the far higher number of eggs every woman sheds and destroys with each menstruation. Women shed and lose 10s of eggs for every successful pregnancy. The uterus naturally destroys far more eggs, be they fertilised or not, than it retains. The uterus is a crucible of destruction far more often then it's a baby forge.
And souls, being immeasurable, intangible and undetectable won't be of help in clearing up the debate. Because the debate is mostly about controlling those uteruses and the bodies they are in at the expense of the ball of cells that might or might not have a soul but is set to have more rights than the organ owner it incubates in.

You intentionally drank normal coffee, not decaf. You got eggs Benedict with hollandaise sauce. You ate a bologna sandwich. You ate sushi. You took your legally prescribed painkillers. You wore heels and tripped going up a flight of stairs. You took some multivitamins that had vitamin A in them. Did you do it on purpose? Is THAT what caused this?
20% of detected pregnancies end in miscarriage (certainly many more in the first 4 weeks that are never even known about.) Most of those are from simple genetic issues- not all combinations of egg and sperm actually code for a viable embryo. But how do you prove that? How do you prove, in a court of law, in front of a jury, that it wasn't because you cleaned the cats litterbox or took the headache medicine that had caffiene in it? That it wasn't the blue cheese or the raw sprouts in your salad? That it wasn't because you smoked some weed or took your adderall? That it wasn't because you *intentionally* tripped on the stairs because isn't it reckless endangerment to wear heels when you're pregnant?
You are right that we should absolutely be doing things to support pregnant folk and make keeping pregnancies a more viable, safe option for more people.
But if you take away abortion access, you are going to harm a *lot* of people. There are many many many reasons why a person might choose an abortion. Some of those can addressed through increased support, more accessible Healthcare, subsidized pre natal care, paid parental leave. But you'll never be able to eliminate every reason, and each person who decides that it is their best option and has that option taken away from them? That is an act of violence, of medical abuse, of our dignity and personhood under the law being eroded.

Zero offense to you because I assume youâve heard of this and are just bringing it to folksâ attention, but someone accusing someone of trying to abort by drinking non-decaf coffee is the dumbest thing Iâve ever heard of-- is anyone actually doing that? Have the cases panned out? I think itâs good to bring these concerns up-- this is such a hot issue itâs easy to swing between extremes and 100% we should avoid that extreme as much as the whole âabortion is fine up to birth, nine months, you can still do itâ deal. The first article, which I know you didn't read, says "From 1973-2020, NAPW has recorded 1,600 such cases, with about 1,200 occurring in the last 15 years alone. Although some involved women who were arrested for things such as falling down, or giving birth at home, the vast majority involved drugs, and women of colour were overrepresented."

Then there Marshae Jones, who was indicted on manslaughter after being shot in a fight she was said to have instigated.
In 2008, a New York woman was not wearing a seat belt while driving under the influence. She was also in the third trimester of her pregnancy. The car crashed, killing two people in a head-on collision, and her baby was delivered by emergency cesarean section, but did not survive. She was charged with manslaughter in the two deaths, and with driving under the influence â but those charges were dropped. A jury did, however, hold her responsible for failing to wear a seat belt and convicted her of manslaughter for losing her baby.
In 2011, Bei Bei Shuai spent a year in an Indiana jail before her feticide charges were dropped. She was suffering from severe depression (an illness just like any other) and attempted suicide while pregnant. She survived, but had a miscarriage.
Also in 2011, Christine Taylor was arrested after she had a miscarriage when she fell down the stairs and then called an ambulance for help.
In 2013, Purvi Patel was arrested after having a stillborn birth. There was no evidence to support her having done ANYTHING to cause it.
And these were *with Roe in place.* Without Roe, we have *even less protection.*
Pregnancy is tricky. It's dangerous. It doesn't always go well. And now, it can put us on trial as well.
And no, it's not a "huge industry"- it's fucking health care and harm reduction.
Portraying this issue as just "killing kids" is so fucking disrespectful and callous. It shows a COMPLETE lack of empathy for pregnant individuals and why they might choose abortion.
You don't think that forcing someone to carry a pregnancy when it places a risk to their physical and mental health isn't a violence? You think that forcing someone to carry pregnancy that was caused by rape or by a physically abusive partner isn't a violence? You think that forcing people who are experiencing pregnancy loss to wait, for days or weeks, for their symptoms to be bad enough to risk sepsis in order to reviewed care isn't a violence? Hey, itâs your post, and honestly I was most interested in the discussion around souls, because I think itâs a very interesting concept. I 100% agree, itâs nonsense that anyone would get charged with murder for falling down the stairs. Zero tolerance on that, 100%. Zero people should be made to wait and risk sepsis if theyâre experiencing pregnancy loss-- I frankly have no idea why a doctor would be afraid of something like that being called an abortion. Some of those cases you posted are absolutely off the chain, and I absolutely am onboard to avoid that level of extreme. Being arrested for a stillborn birth is insane. I was asking about the coffee stuff because that doesnât seem like a thing-- I checked out the links, but it looked a lot like most of them were women taking hard drugs while pregnant. I think thatâs a very complicated issue, because if folks are taking hard drugs, they most likely are in a very hard place already and need a lot of help. I donât necessarily disagree that itâs a bad thing to discourage doing things that hurt a new human, though-- and I do mean this with all due respect, but to say abortions arenât violence is wild to me.
 It seems in my earlier post I didnât come across as concerned for the women involved, and if thatâs the case, thatâs on me. I think anyone who feels like an abortion is their best option is in a terrible place already, and certainly shouldnât be prosecuted harshly on top of it. I canât even imagine what they would be going through to be making a choice like that. At the same time, I still think getting away from a place where abortion is the go-to choice is a good plan, and the move away from âabortion at any timeâ is generally a good one.
We need support for folks, and I think abortion is sub-par support. Way sub-par, and I think it makes it easy for lawmakers and companies and things to avoid providing better support.
I say this very gently (which is tough to get to come across in text) and hold this very lightly, but the situation with a mother and child I donât think is quite as cut and dry as âsomeone else having the right to your organsâ. It seems to me similar to when a kid is five-- do they have a right to my time? It seems odd to even frame it that way. Theyâre totally dependent-- if I left them alone theyâd wander into traffic and die. Thatâs a little off track, but itâs the nearest I can get to expressing how strange the organs things seems to me.

Your ORGANS are not your time. An obligation for care isn't the same this as an obligation to give someone your BODY. It's your fucking body.
Abortion is *critical* support, and when you support legislation that limits access, you do direct and horrific harm to people who are already in a rough situation. You are telling people who are already in a bad situation that they don't even get to have their own BODY.
You don't get to be like "well, access should be cut off from people who have bad reasons, but totally unrestricted for people who have good reasons"- because having to prove your reasons is inherently an attack on our dignity, slows care, and cuts off people who need it.

Stop posting that you are a safe place to go "camping." It's performative and all it does is puts people in need of abortions in danger.
If you need an abortion, please for the love of god, do not reach out to anyone that says they are a safe place to go "camping." This is not a safe way for you to receive access to services.
Most of these people probably are well-intentioned, but that doesn't stop this from being base-level activism that is entirely performative and more focused on making themselves look and feel good than on actually helping people.
I want you to think for a second - what does this actually do? Because it's not a sneaky way to help people. Everyone knows what it means and you've just announced to everyone that you're a person to watch. That if someone suspected of having an abortion shows up to your house with you, now they have proof and evidence that that is why they were there. Some of these people might start off as well-intentioned, but as soon as their safety is on the line, they won't hesitate to sell you out.
And I can bet you, that some of these people are not well-intentioned. Some of these people will turn you in as soon as you reach out. Some of these people will try to persuade you not to get one (you know, like the Crisis Pregnancy Centers that imitate abortion clinics but really just push birthing as the only option?)
So what can you do?
Go through an abortion network. Go through agency channels. These people are trained and vetted. This is their job and they are going to be prepared a whole lot more than some random person online.
If you need to find one or are visiting a website, I suggest using a VPN. It's not a perfect safety measure, but it does give you a higher level of protection than without.

So, if you actually listen to the people who have had abortions, youâll find that *none* of them did it âjust cause.â Everyone has their reasons. Everyone makes that choice *because* of something.
And those of us who support unfettered access to abortion recognize that it isnât *our business*, or our governors business, or the presidents business, or our senators business, what those reasons are. Those of us who can become pregnant should be given the respect snd dignity to make those choices without having to get permission from Ted Cruz first.
Now, if you want to reduce the number of abortions, there are lots of ways to do that *without* restricting peopleâs ability to access abortions. Universal Healthcare, subsidized prenatal and child care, expanded protections to victims of domestic and sexual abuse, expanded access to contraceptives, guaranteed paid parental leave- these things can reduce abortion rates, and they donât fundamentally dehumanize and denegrate those of us who can become pregnant.
Hey, I've seen a lot of people saying that you should support smaller-scale abortion facilities instead of spending on Planned Parenthood because, according to them, PP already has plenty of money.
While I totally support donating to local abortion care facilities, I think it's really dangerous to be spreading around misinformation about Planned Parenthood, so here are a list of reasons that Planned Parenthood is a really worthwhile resource right about now:
Planned Parenthood has a large legal fund and they know how to use it. Not only will they work on-the-ground to provide reproductive health services, they will work on the legislative level in every state to fight the legal battles that are about to become very fucking necessary. Donate directly to abortion services, yes - but if you want to protect the legality of abortion and the right to privacy in the doctor's office, Planned Parenthood's legal team will fight in the places where you, as an individual, cannot.
I've heard some people saying that Planned Parenthood actually does damage to the reproductive justice community because they "take up all the talking space" and then they'll say "well, abortion is only a small amount of what Planned Parenthood does" thus stigmatizing abortion. While I can't speak for every PP facility, in my experience during my volunteer trainings, THIS IS MISINFORMATION. Outside supporters of PP will say this ABOUT Planned Parenthood, but at my volunteer trainings the workers actually had us do spoken activities to de-stigmatize abortion for anyone who needed it. We were given multiple "abortion is good, actually" talks.
On that note, the things PP does aside from abortion are actually very important. One thing they do is distribute INFORMATION on a widespread scale. This information will often focus on important things to know about pregnancy health, when abortion might be needed, and communicative campaigns to spread abortion stories with specific participants' consent in order to de-stigmatize abortion and spread awareness.
A number of smaller "Pregnancy Crisis Centers" disguise themselves as abortion providers, but are really fundamentalist Christian centers in disguise. These centers will abuse and psychologically torture people who were planning on coming in for abortions. However, a Planned Parenthood is always what it says it will be. I support Planned Parenthood because I know exactly what my money is going to when I make donations.
If you do know of a smaller abortion facility that needs funding, by all means, donate! (Also if you go on PP's website you can choose a PP facility to fund directly, if you don't want your donation to go into their large legal fund.) But if you're supporting a smaller center, do make sure that they really are a legitimate abortion provider before you donate.
Let's not spread misinformation or be divisive, people! That will only hurt reproductive justice, in the end. If you want to support small-scale abortion care centers, absolutely do that. It will be very much needed in the coming months. But you can do that without dunking on Planned Parenthood and all that they do for reproductive rights, justice, and healthcare. It is entirely possible to be supportive of both.

Terminating a pregnancy that you cannot or do not want to carry to term, for whatever reason, is taking responsibility. Pregnancy is never something that should be a punishment and to force someone to go through a pregnancy they don't consent to is literally torturous.
