@deathhairball
Just gonna share some pictures of MÄori people here for the members of the fandom calling the Nona cover white washing
Jemaine Clement is MÄori
Rima Ti Wiata is MÄori
Both bride and groom of the viral wedding haka video are MÄori. (Actually, at the time, the groom was criticized for participating in his own wedding haka because people made the assumption that he was white.)
The narrative that all Polynesian or Indigenous people have a monochromatic appearance or āset facial features and skin toneā is just insisting on a lack of diversity for āwokeā reasons. Many people from the same island look very different from each other. I understand some folks feel very protective of characters they see themselves in, but thereās also a point of gatekeeping real people with that identity because they donāt fit the box youāve made.
The argument that it canāt be Harrow because she ālooks whiteā pisses me off so much. I grew up in the south (Iām pÄkehÄ) and people literally use shit like this to erase the fact that Southlandās population is 15% MÄori, as well as to delegitimise MÄori people across the nation (as youāve pointed out already). This isnāt cherrypicking a small number of MÄori people to argue the case, itās normal for MÄori people to look like this.
Saying that someone canāt be MÄori because they appear to be white is colonial bullshit thatās actively harming MÄori people now. Using those ideas in this fandom is wrong, even if youāre doing it under the guise of āpreventing whitewashingā. MÄori culture doesnāt use skin tone or blood quantum to determine whether someone is MÄori, they have their own genealogy-based system (whakapapa), so imposing other systems over the one MÄori people actually use is racist.
This isnāt to say that itās impossible to whitewash MÄori characters ā itās very possible. When thereās a clear canonical description of a MÄori characterās features, itās racist and whitewashing to change those features and lighten their skin tone. It would be possible to whitewash John Gaius, for instance, since heās described as brown in HtN. However, we donāt have a clear description of Harrowās features in this way. We have Word of God description of her as MÄori and some colour picking from the HtN cover of her hands (and maybe the tiny bit of exposed neck). Descriptions of her face donāt gesture to ethnicity. That isnāt enough to make a solid claim that the cover of Nona The Ninth is whitewashing in comparison to previous parts of the series.
Kia ora, MÄori person weighing in.
The only requisite to being MÄori is whakapapa. If any one of your ancestors is MÄori, youāre MÄori. Thatās it.
The author of these books has said that Harrow and Gideon are both "mixed MÄori". This means they're MÄori. It does not say anything about their skin colour, and it does not need to.
Plenty of MÄori people are paler than the character on the Nona cover, myself included. Saying we're too pale to be MÄori or that we don't look it is perpetuating colonial erasure and actively harming MÄori people. I have a knot in my stomach from typing this.
This character has not been whitewashed. You cannot tell if someone is MÄori by the colour of their skin. The people calling this whitewashing, in doing so, are whitewashing this character.
I was sent the cover image and told people were complaining about whitewashing. The first thing I thought seeing the character was "huh, they look MÄori". @canadianwheatpirates said they reminded him of me when I had long hair. If that character stepped out of that image into my life and told me they were MÄori, I would believe them. You should believe them.
Go watch this. It says all the things I want to say.
A small excerpt: "There's a lot of young MÄori out there who aren't as confident and comfortable in their MÄoritanga and your comments could seriously damage the way they see themselves when it comes to being MÄori, whether or not they're worthy of being MÄori based on their skin colour or their talent or whether or not they can speak te reo." -- @babiiinative on tiktok
If we were to rate movies just by how accurate their titles are, Drive would be considered the greatest movie ever made
Reservoir Dogs on the other hand would be considered one of the worst films ever put to tape
Where's my fucking reservoir, Quinton?
Jurassic Park gets a score of 2.86/10, because only 2 of the 7 dinosaur species in the movie are actually from the Jurassic
Holes, 10/10
unless youāre a topologist, in which case theyāre all indentations
Gravity, 1/10, basically no gravity in the entire film smh
... so, I read a lot of books as a kid. Goosebumps, Hank the Cowdog, the Cricket in Times Square, all kinds of books. And I remember one year getting this box set of books that I *loved* about a litter of kittens who are inexplicably born with wings and go on some little adventures.
So, I look it up to see if it's still in print.
Ursula K Le Guin.
Wizard of Earthsea Le Guin. Left Hand of Darkness Le Guin. "We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable; so did the divine right of kings" LE GUIN wrote *Catwings*
I, my friends, had incredible taste as a child.
Found a copy on ebay. It's even shorter than I remember. Lol 40 whole pages.
With these beautiful illustrations.
"Few people know what fish think about injustice, or anything else." I cant explain it. But this is so funny to me.
Iāve been waiting months for the Ashland mini rotary phone to come back in stock so I can do this craft
Hey how does it feel to be the greatest artistic mind of the 21st century?
I know thatās kind of the go-to thing to show that a vampire character isĀ āone of the good onesā or whatever but it actually seems a little bit more fucked up for a vampire to steal blood from a blood bank than for a vampire to attack people for blood, at least as long as itās not the kind of vampire where a bite is instantly lethal like it never stops bleeding.Ā
People can recover from losing some blood but blood bank blood is constantly in short supply and is reserved for people who imminently need blood transfusion of a specific blood type or else they die.
I also hate the āI can just substitute human blood with animal bloodā like the whole idea of vampirism sort of hinges on the fact the only thing you can feed off of are humans.
YOU get it
Once you start having vampires subsist on animals, well, like, so do humans. In fact the average human probably eats more animals per year than most of the animal-blood-drinking vampires Iāve seen depicted.
Thatās not a vampire, all youāve written is an immortal superhuman who subsists onā¦food, even if itās a bit undercooked. Thatās a fucking elf.
Illustration for the cover of Christina Rossettiās : āGoblin Market and other Poemsā by her brother, Dante Gabriel Rossetti
YOU'RE STILL ALIVE???
No. This is a haunting. From here on out it gets really scary.
another strong contender forĀ āthe most Neil Gaiman post by Neil Gaimanā
Lord of the Rings + Reductress (Part 6)
oh did I forget to mention that Foxfire aka fairy fire aka chimpanzee fire exists
Foxfire is not a specific type of fungi, but rather refers to bioluminescence emitted by multiple species. Fun fact: it was used to illuminate the barometer and compass needles in one of the worldās first submarines, which incidentally was named Turtle.
wrong gif wrong gif WRONG FUCKING GIF
