Dissection
Tohru wasn’t prepared for the announcement. She’d forgotten all about the dissection requirement in this class, until now of course, probably because she’d been busy dealing with so many other school-related and simply other things.
The girl was immediately worried by the information, feeling suddenly somber about it when she thought of Yuki, her lab partner. She was sure the boy would insist it was fine, because he knew she needed the grade in order to pass physiology. Still, Tohru didn’t want her friend to participate, especially since he most likely only would because of her, because he would feel it necessary to accompany her during and help her as much as he could with the project. It wasn’t as if she’d had much experience with it before, nor as if she had ever wanted to.
She considered saying something to him, looking over at Yuki concernedly from where she sat, but right now they were in class, though it was nearly over. After, she would, definitely.
Although Tohru didn’t think she would be very effective at changing his mind, she would at least try, try and tell him that he was under no obligation to show up tomorrow, on the day of the dissection.
He seemed worried about it, too.
It’s going to be fine, Yuki thought. Disgusting, but fine. He glanced up towards where Kyo sat, briefly wondering if he was going to sink down to his old childish contempt towards rats in general. A year ago, Kyo might have poked fun about it, and made the situation even worse. He’d matured since then, though.
Yuki rested his forehead against his palm, wondering if it was a lost cause. Kyo? Be mature about slicing open a rat? Only time would tell. He had more important things to worry about. Like, not being sick in class the next day.
Mayu passed around the instruction packet, telling the students to look over them that night, if they had time. Yuki opened it to the first few pages, and tasted bile in the back of his throat. Closing his eyes, he swallowed it back and shut the cover page again.
He’d look at it later, when there weren’t people around. For now, Yuki slid the packet into his school bag, not wanting to see it on his desk anymore.
He kept his eyes down, avoiding meeting anyone’s eyes. He felt self-conscious and awkward. Had he over-reacted? Had anyone noticed? All he wanted was for the school chimes to sound so he could make a quick exit and put this part of his day behind him.
Five minutes passed. Ten minutes. Finally, the chimes sounded, quickly overtaken by the chatter of freed students. Yuki didn’t take any time in gathering his things and leaving, careful not to look at anyone. Out in the hall, he stopped. Don’t run away. Face it. It was the only way to overcome this. He’d probably worried Tohru by leaving in such a hurry. He wasn’t running from her, after all. Leaning his back against a wall, he waited.
The girl felt more dread at their teacher’s continued commentary of the assignment, her stomach dropping with the words as they provoked further anxious thoughts about it in her head, causing her eyes to dart nervously around the room. She noticed that her friend kept his head down most of the time, and this observation gave her greater worry for him.
Tohru took the instruction packet from the student in front of her as the class passed it over to others in their respective rows, honestly trying to concentrate on what Mayu was saying. Yet, she found it difficult, as her feelings of anticipation and sympathy, or at least the reasons for her having them, occupied a larger space in her mind than anything else at the moment - as was often the case.
Once the school’s bells rang, she had to scoop her stuff hurriedly into her book bag and run a little ways to catch up to Yuki who, after leaving quicker than usual, it seemed, was waiting for her off to the side of the hall. He looked like he’d had to come back to himself, so to speak.
“Yuki-kun, are you alright?” Of course, to her, he didn’t seem to be, but it was only polite to ask, rather than assume. Tohru didn’t want to confuse the situation, particularly because of any simple misunderstandings or miscommunication. “I..I just want you to know that you don’t have to come tomorrow, if you don’t want to. I’ll be okay...though your help with the work is always appreciated, I can do it on my own.” The girl gulped a little. She could do it, that was true, but do it well was another matter entirely.
Naturally, she hoped, but wasn’t sure. Tohru supposed she should have provided a better explanation, despite not knowing what else to add, and so she just gazed at him, her body tensing awkwardly and swaying slightly.

Dissection
This was the week. At the beginning of the term, it had been announced that a major part of their physiology class would be dissecting a rat, and it would count for a large part of their grade. Yuki rested his chin in his hand, staring out the window of the classroom. Mayu was in front of the class, reminding them that the dissection was scheduled for the next day, and could the class please make sure to be prepared?
They’d be with their usual lab partners, and for Yuki that meant Tohru. He couldn’t leave her to dissect an animal on her own, or else he might have skipped class. His grade was good enough, anyway. But hers wasn’t.
His stomach turned. Just one more day. It wasn’t much time at all. It wasn’t that he had a deep love for rats, but he had known their emotions and fear before. Of course, these would be dead and… well, emotionless. He wouldn’t feel their fear.
Somehow, that made it worse and more bearable at the same time.
