MALT DISNAE is now available via the below link AND it is FREE AS FUCK (as is all my music) and there are FIVE options to choose from; I recommend looking through this on a laptop / desktop so you can see the various artwork clearer : )

 The reason I’m doing this is because after a few BARRIE conversations, I want to approach how I do things creatively a bit differently because at the end of the day, I do this because I absolutely love making music and I feel, although I’ve always given what I’ve earned away, this previous ethos still revolves around capital, monetary gains etc.

 Now, you can pay something if you want, but if you don’t, then that’s totally cool…all I ask is that you do something sound for someone else in return, maybe take your maw out for a jar of McEwens Export, or phone up an old friend and organise to do something fun that they would like; maybe arrange an orienteering event or go play a wonderful game of drink; or both lol.

 If you do chuck some beans my way, then I will use these to do some sort of good with…in previous years, I have usually donated all my creative earnings to a charity of choice, however I want to try something different this year; not sure what but please trust me that I will be as transparent with these plans as soon as I can figure out how I’m going to try and make a positive difference; initial thoughts are helping raise mental health awareness and contribute solutions to the ever growing issue around homelessness.

 SO…back to the release, I’ve uploaded this album 5 times; each one has a different album cover which is a representation of each character within the album.  The idea is that after a month, whichever one has been downloaded the most will become the main artwork.

 Just as a reminder, this album is a concept piece loosely based on the grim origins of certain Walt Disney princesses lol so you can pick from:

 So aye, that’s that…I’ve noted who was all involved within BandCamp but I want to say a huge thank you to everyone again, so Michael Brennan, Duncan Aitken, Liam Saunders, Rachel Wright, Pete Maher and Rory Buchanan, I will always be eternally grateful to you all for helping me create this piece which I am so so proud of…also, Matt Punton, Greig Duncanson, Sean DeFrancesco, Marty McPherson, Gameboy and anyone else who had the patience to listen to me ramble on and on and on till my thoughts were completely focussed on how to take this forward, muchos cheers to you all as well.

Chasing shooting stars

It’s New Year’s Eve, and after a tense three days of searching in the heart of the South Australian outback, Professor Phil Bland has finally found the impact site. After leaping off his quad bike and running across the salty mud flats, he falls to his knees and thrusts his hand straight into a hole smashed into the landscape. His arm disappears nearly half a metre into the earth - and when it emerges again, there’s a mud-slathered rock clutched in his fist. 

“It’s an iron meteorite, mate!” are Bland’s first, breathless words. He holds it reverently, wiping off the thick, clay-like mud. He’s kneeling on Kati-Thanda, also known as Lake Eyre, and what he holds in his hands is a hunk of rock older than the Earth itself. 

It’s also the first proof that the Desert Fireball Network works. 

Built by Professor Bland’s research team at Curtin University, WA, the Desert Fireball Network is an automated meteor tracking system made up 49 digital cameras dotted across the Australian outback. Over the next few years, it’s projected to watch a third of Australian skies - and it does exactly what its name says. It looks for fireballs. 

As meteors from the wider solar system plough down into the Earth’s atmosphere at hypersonic velocities, they burn up. For fleeting moments, they sear across the sky and light up the darkness. Often, bits of these meteors hurtle all the way down to the surface. The multiple cameras of the Fireball Network can spot a fireball and triangulate its path through the atmosphere, so its trajectory can be reconstructed in 3D. This can give information about the meteorite’s mass, its orbit and origins in the Solar System, and the location where it smashed into the surface. 

On November 27th last year, Professor Bland’s team got the heads up from their network that a fireball had blazed through the atmosphere and fallen to Earth in the middle of South Australia. Its landing site was narrowed down to within a small area in the bed of Lake Eyre, a massive salt lake, and so they knew they had to get to it fast: if too much rain came, any trace of the impact could be washed away. They organised to fly a spotter plane over the area to get eyes on the impact site, then the team flew across states, rented 4WDs and camping gear, got permission from the Arabana people, who are the traditional custodians of Kati-Thanda… Then finally, on December 31st, Bland pulled the meteorite from the mud just hours before heavy rains swept across Lake Eyre. 

It turns out that the meteorite itself is fairly ordinary - if you can call any 4.6 billion year old object ordinary - but the most interesting thing is that the Fireball Network could attach an orbit to it. It was traced it back to the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, where it used to be part of a larger asteroid that broke up in an impact. This gives it incredibly useful context that other meteorite discoveries don’t have. 

If the team can observe and study enough meteorites and their original orbits, they’ll be able to make a geological map of the solar system. This will give invaluable insights into the solar system’s formation, especially the formation of the planets. Hopefully, it will help answer questions like: how did the Earth form? How are planets made?

Domiciles - 100 Miles (Official Music Video)

     I’m sitting here in the back room of my Craigbank Ranch in the Kingdom of Fife.  It’s 6.17am, I have a powerfully strong black coffee and I’m listening to Domiciles; a relatively new and young band that hail from the same region as I.

       100 Miles is the first You Tube search to grace my ears and it’s a legitimate peach of a song.  The opening keys and simple drum pattern set the tone and are soon followed by the catchy 60’s guitar riffs that echo the warm melodic harmonies of Nick (Young) and Rory (Cowieson).

       I truly love everything this song has to offer me.  The verse, bridge, chorus; back to the opening riff and then repeat sequence is testament these fellows understand where the song wants them to take it.  It’s the outro, which is denoted in the video as “And now…intermission”, that really seals this effort though…it’s not too far off a modern, upbeat psych twist on Procal Harum’s A Whiter Shade of Pale; well, sort of ; )

       100 Miles is four hundred shorter than The Proclaimers journey; is this how one should judge a song though? Categorically not.  If anything, I’ve travelled to far greater places in my mind this morning than any number of BAH RAH DAH’s could ever take me; of course, that’s no slight on the aforementioned Edinburgh based duo; this is just the psychedelic reality of the world we choose to live in today.

      In summary, read, listen, download from the Domiciles BandCamp and then listen many times more; it’s what Charlie and Craig Reid would want.
