@tomboyfitness
Very cool interview with Elliot Sailors about gender identity and her decision to transition into male modeling.
Like most of you, I'm constantly googling new techniques for the gym. There's a lot of crap out there, but these guys never let me down, and they explain WHY a technique works - which is important because the best results come when you have a solid mind - body connection. Sounds corny, but it's true.
Not sure how to achieve that? Try working out once without headphones/music (I know, gasp, impossible right?) this will help you focus on the muscle you're targeting. Forget everything else and literally just think about that muscle as you're working it. It's a game changer.
Good luck!
what I'm doing today...before abs.
Hop on a stationary bike and try this on your next cardio day!
ever feel that way? I do. Constantly. Whether you're in the wrong body due to gender, weight, height; maybe you have pimples or wish you had tan skin - we've all been there at some point.
This thought used to consume me. Admittedly, it still does sometimes. But I decided to stick it out in my biologically female body and work as hard as I can, naturally, to look more masculine. As long as you're working hard to feel good, in a safe way that treats your body with the respect it deserves, then let yourself have this thought but always take action. Your confidence will help you in every aspect of life. So lets get it straight. I'm here to help.
Tension is everything. No Seriously.
Stop trying to follow all the massive guys in the gym. First of all, most of them have no idea what they're doing and are causing more damage than anything. And Secondly, that's not how YOUR body puts on muscle. How do I know? Experience.
SO, when you're at the gym doing your lifts, focus on placing as much tension as possible on the muscle being worked. How? 1 second up, 4 seconds down.
I'll use the bicep curl as an example. Curl up for 1 explosive second, do not pause at the top (though try to squeeze as hard as you can) then slowly lower the weight down for 4 seconds. THAT is tension. Also, make sure you're moving through the entire range of motion, NO CHEATING.
Tension builds real muscle - focus on pounding out 8-10 sets of tension focused reps. You may have to go lighter on the weight, but it will definitely be worth it.
Hold it Riiiiiiiiiiight There!
I've been out of the gym for a week now recovering from an operation, and I'm going NUTS not being able to work out. But my buddy showed me some great moves I could do to keep things tight while I'm in recovery.
Squeeze your biceps as hard as you can, like you're holding an extremely heavy weight. Hold it right there to keep the tension, for about 10 seconds, then release. if your arm isn't shaking by the last few seconds, you're not squeezing hard enough. Keep your back straight, shoulders back, and put all of your thought into that muscle. Release for 10 seconds then do it again. 20 reps.
You can apply this to literally any muscle in the body. A little trick he taught me I can't wait to try when I get back in the gym, is to throw 10 seconds of this hold on to the end of every set. Try it and let me know if it works!
Don't Neglect Those Sexy Legs!
I hate leg days. With everything I have in me. Why? Because who cares about your legs, right? It's those arms everyone wants to see. OK, that is probably true, but your legs provide all the support you need for those big lifts. Plus, most leg exercises build core muscles, and who doesn't want a six pack. Obviously.
Some people like to squat, some people like to deadlift, some like to do both - but my advice, don't do them on the same day. Why? You'll get a much better lift if you split them up. So if you're going to include deadlifts in your plan, do them on back days.
Legs:
Squat - 5sets, pyramid the weight, reps of 12,10,8,6,15
Don't be a big shot and compromise form for heavy weight. Get yourself as far down as you can, with your back as straight as it can be. If you're new, start with body weight squats or hold a light dumbbell. You'll get there. Don't hurt yourself.
Stiff leg Deadlift - 5 sets, pyramid the weight, reps of 12,10,8,6,15
Make sure you feel it in the back of your thigh!
Single-leg Leg Press Machine - 3 sets, same weight
Walking Lunges - 3 sets to failure
Carry a weight on this one if you can
Standing Calf Raises - 5 sets, pyramid the weight, reps of 12,10,8,6,15
Seated Calf Raises - 5 sets, pyramid weight, reps 12,10,8,6,15
Do a burn out to failure at the end - they can be half reps
How Much Cardio Should You Be Doing?!
Despite the fact that I want to look like a guy, I still have that little woman voice inside of me saying, "You've still got muffin tops! Run longer!" I'm here to tell you that running for hours on end is not the answer. Unless you're preparing for a marathon or want to look anorexic, it's just not the way. You may lose weight, but you're also going to lose muscle. And fuck, we don't want that, it's hard enough to build it with all this estrogen coursing through our veins! Fuck!
So here's the answer: short bursts of intense cardio. It can actually aid in muscle development. I've heard this point made several times on the internet and it makes so much sense: why are sprinters always ripped as fuck, and marathon runners look like they need to be hospitalized? Short bursts of energy recruits muscle in a way that helps build and shape it, rather than devour it.
So pick up the pace! But only for like, 30 seconds. It's called HIIT: High Intensity Interval Training. You're going to have mixed feelings at first - you'll be like "fuck that was short, did I do enough?" While dripping sweat and bending over like you're going to vomit. It's good.
Sample HIIT Workout:
Walk for 5 minute warm-up
Sprint intervals for 15 minutes: 30 seconds sprint, 90 seconds walk (try it on a bike first, sprinting can fuck up your shins and knees easily)
Walk for 5 minute cool-down
Tag this on to the end of a lift and you'll feel like death - in the best way possible.
Chest / Shoulders / Triceps
If you're a beginner this is an ambitious routine so don't try to squeeze it all in. Separate out the shoulders and throw them in at the beginning of a cardio day.
Remember to always keep your shoulders back so you don't throw them into every movement. It's very easy to injure your shoulders over time with bad form.
Chest:
Flat Bench Press: 5 sets with different weights of 12, 10, 8, 6, then 15 reps. So you'll pick a weight you can do 12 reps with, then a heavier weight for 10, and so on, then back to a light weight for a set of 15. Keep rest periods to 45 seconds.
Incline Fly: 4 sets same weight, reps 12,10, 8, 6
Incline Barbell Press: 5 sets, different weights, reps 12,10,8,6,15
Shoulders:
1.Standing Military Press: don't go overboard on this one. It's very easy to throw all kinds of other muscles into this and you easy to fuck up your shoulders. Go light until you feel really comfortable with the movement.
5 sets, different weights, reps 12,10,8,6,15 - but only if you can. If it's difficult to knock out 10 reps with the same weight you used for 12 reps, then just keep using that weight. Be patient with this exercise, it's tough.
2. Seated Press Machine: 3-4 sets, same weight, reps 12,10,8,6
3. Deltoid Side Raise Machine: The reason I go with this machine is that the deltoids are hard to isolate with dumbbells. Personally, I end up throwing everything else into the movement and I can't do heavy weights. Jump on a machine and knock em out.
4 sets, same weight, reps 12,10,8,6
Tricep:
So your tricep has actually gotten a lot of work over the course of this workout, so don't be surprised if you have to go much lighter than normal on these exercises.
1. Lying down tricep extension (Skull Crushers): 5 sets, different weights, 12,10,8,6,15 reps - Focus on your form!
2. Rope Extensions: 4 sets, same weight, 12,10,8,6 (remember to keep your shoulders back and chest out. Don't mimic the other guys pushing way more weight but with terrible form.)
3. If you have it in you, do 3 sets of either dips to failure, or push-ups with your hands at your chest and elbows tight to your side. This will murder you.
* Remember to only take 45-60 seconds of rest in between every set!!!
There are some good preworkout drinks out there, but this is one of my favorites. It's affordable, tastes pretty good, and actually works - also, if you've tried pre-workout drinks you know they can often give you a tingling sensation or make you feel cracked out of your mind. Assault made me feel a bit tingly for the first week but then it was smooth sailing. Feels good, keeps you focused, strong lifts, and no crazy crash afterwards.
Back / Biceps Superset Workout
Warm Up: walk 5 min, run 15, walk 5min (incline: 1 speed: light)
Superset (3 sets of 8 reps, rest 1 minute in between each superset)
1A. Dumbell Singe Arm Row
1B. Hammer Curls
2A. Dumbell Pull-Over
2B. Concentration Curls
3A. Standing barbell row
3B. Barbell curl (straight bar)
4A. Lat pull down (different grip each time)
4B. Standing straight arm pull down
*If you want a little more cardio you can walk uphill on a high incline for 10 minutes.
** Also, you can change the rep scheme to be 12, 10, 8 to really fatigue the muscle.
