I’m sure I’m not the only user on Tumblr who caught chicken pox years before the vaccine became available in 1995… so I was immunized by infection, but my parents would have LOVED to have a vaccine as an option instead.

Yeah I got chicken pox circa 1991 and it sucked.

And I’ve seen parents now who aren’t anti-vaxxers, but who opt out of the Chicken Pox vaccine because “we all got Chicken Pox and we’re fine”, which is true, except for that the Chicken Pox virus never leaves your system. The virus remains, dormant, in the nerve tissue near your spinal cord, and can reactivate at any time as a very painful skin rash called Shingles.

There is a Shingles vaccine, but the best way to avoid shingles is to never get the Chicken Pox.

In addition, Chicken Pox is relatively harmless only if you’re young. It can be very dangerous if you contract Chicken Pox as an adult, as it can lead to Pneumonia or Encephalitis (swelling of the brain). It can be life-threatening if you are pregnant and contract Chicken Pox.

This is part of the reason they used to have “Pox Parties” before there was a vaccine. The younger you get it, the better, so when one kid got Chicken Pox, everyone with young kids would try to get them infected too, to get it over with.

Like… that sounds so medieval and fucked up now, but it wasn’t that long ago… and it’s wild to me that people are against eradicating Chicken Pox because “we all had it.” Like, why make your kid suffer because you weren’t lucky enough to be born after the vaccine came out?!

Note from a Spanish speaker: I’ve only ever heard it as “no binario,” always, just like how it’s always “transgénero.” 

Even “mujer transgénero.” Even though she's a woman, you keep the -o because of the compound word. “Trans” describes “género,” a masculine noun in Spanish regardless of the person who has the gender.

Many people are starting to adopt -e endings for mixed gender groups and mixed gender people, but it’s really not necessary with “no binario” because the thing that is nonbinary (the gender of the human being described) already has a masculine grammatical gender.

Actually, it depends on what it refers to as any other Spanish adjective.

"A non binary person" would be "Una persona no binariA" because person is a feminine noun.

"The non binary gender" would be "El género no binariO" because, as transgenderhelp said, gender is a masculine noun.

If you said "Alex is non binary" then you'd use "Alex es no binariE" because Alex is neither masculine nor feminine.

The Real Academia de la lengua Española (RAE) says that using E for neutral nouns is incorrect and the default for mixed groups and things of unspecified/non-binary gender is the masculine O. But we're ignoring scholars because they're a bunch of old white guys with multiple sticks up their asses.

Tldr: This is how you'd use all versions of non-binary: Alex es una persona no binaria, porque su género es no binario, así que Alex es no binarie.

Although you made me realise something - waaaay back in 1991 when i first started learning italian, my teacher glossed over the idea of 'masculine' v 'feminine' words and instead had us focus on the last *letter* to determine if it was il/la/é, etc.  Remarkable woman.
