okay this might be a me-specific experience but i was kinda charmed at the linguistic progression of rocky and grace as they figured out how to communicate because the translator picking up quirks but not quite squaring grammatical nuances really reminds me of like, Chinese Pidgin English? Or when I'm forcing my english grammatical structure through the limited grab bag of mandarin vocabulary I get to communicate with my parents. Like it's clearly a simplification of language on both sides to bridge the gap but it's done in a way that I feel like I've experienced in real life.

like, for instance, the "question" or "statement" at the end of the sentence, right? Well that question particle IS a thing in mandarin, it's tacking on 吗 in places. Or the weird way the program has to sort out how Rocky initially says things that are plurals, which is also a quirk that I have to work around sometimes. It makes me really wonder if Yao might have had an easier translation experience in certain elements and a tougher translation experience in others. I wonder what similarities and differences eridian might have to Russian, too.

Plus I feel like the classic "I speak one language and you speak another and we keep the convo going just fine" experience by the end of the movie is a staple of the multilingual experience
