Whumpuary FAQs
(Making a post for this bc i think it's easier to access than the browser page. this post is linked in the blog description)
Q: What is whump?
A: Whump is a fandom term and describes fictional characters getting hurt in any way. Can be physical, emotional or psychological and overlaps with Hurt/Comfort and Angst. It’s used in fanfiction but also original fiction, movies/TV shows where a character gets hurt (and gifs/video clips of those scenes), fanart/original art and more. Whump can be any hurt: from torture or gore, stranded at sea, sickfic, magic powers with consequences, action movie fights and so much more. Can include (but doesn't have to) comfort, caretakers or characters doing the hurting. Check this link for more discussion and definitions of the term.
Q: Is Whumpuary an event for January or February?
A: Whumpuary takes place in January. For February go check out Febuwhump
Q: Is there an AO3 collection?
A: The 2026 collection is here 2025 collection is here 2024 collection here 2023 collection is here parent collection where you can find some more fics is here.
Q: How do I add my works to the AO3 collection?
A: You can either go to the collection and post to it directly (link above) or when posting/editing your work you need to type in Whumpuary2025 in the collection field. If it shows up in the dropdown just click it, and if it doesn’t show up press enter and you’re good.
(There is a collection just called Whumpuary, that’s the parent collection I made for organizational purposes. It is closed and it is supposed to be closed. The collection to put your works in is called Whumpuary2025)
Q: Is it allowed to combine Whumpuary prompts with other events (such as Bad Things Happen Bingo, …)?
A: Yes, as long as the other event(s) allow it, go ahead!
Q: Can I post works on other sites/social medias?
A: Sure, you can post them anywhere you want or even not at all. But I'll only reblog some of them if they're posted on tumblr (links are also fine).
Q: Can I use existing works as entries? Can I post unfinished works?
A: Yes to both, as long as you're creating something new with the prompts in mind you can add on to existing works. And as long as your entry contains the prompt you can post unfinished works.
Q: Do I have to post works in order? Can I post early/late?
A: Your works are more likely to get reblogged if they are posted on/around the day the prompts are from. But aside from that you can post your works in any order and whenever you want, but they only count as part of the challenge if you post them all throughout January (or the first few days of February).
Q: Can I use the prompts after the event is over?
A: Yes! Use any prompts any time you want. The AO3 collections stay open so you can use those too. Your creations just won’t be reblogged to this blog & "count" for the official challenge.
Q: Do the Alt Prompts have to be done in order?
A: When replacing a main prompt with an alt prompt, you can use any you want.
Q: What are the rules to be a completionist?
A: To be a completionist you have to use at least one prompt from all 15 creation prompt days (black/odd numbers). It’s up to you if you want to make 15 standalone pieces, one big work that includes 15 (or more) prompts or a combination.
Q: Is noncon, nsfwhump/sexual whump, gore, etc. allowed?
A: Yes, any type of content is allowed. Just make sure to tag it correctly.
Q: Is AI generated content allowed?
A: AI generated content is not allowed
If you have any other questions or if anything is unclear, the askbox is open :)
Whumpuary 2026!
these prompts came together through community submissions and a voting form where people voted for their favorites, here are the top 53 prompts
i enjoy this format so like last year there are 15 creation prompts and 15 community prompts/questions. the community prompts are entirely voluntary but are here to possibly inspire some community interaction and trying new things
very excited to see some awesome creations in january!
go here for info/rules/tagging go here for faqs go here for the 2026 ao3 collection
(note: number 31 is not a creation prompt and not required to complete the challenge, it's just colored black so the colors add up)
text version of the prompts and rules is under the cut

11 September. 50 years
Venceremos—Solidarität mit dem Volk Chiles GDR stamp commemorating Chilean president Salvador Allende (1908–1973)
Thousands of women surrounding La Moneda Palace, saying 50 years after the Coup d'Etat "NUNCA MÁS" (Never again).
NEVER FORGET
On September 11, 1973, Augusto Pinochet rose to power, overthrowing the democratically elected president Salvador Allende.
Three days before the coup, the CIA provides President Nixon with a full page of intelligence on preparations in Chile to overthrow Allende.
Transcripts of a phone conversation between Kissinger and Nixon reveal that they did not have a hand in the final coup. They do take credit for creating the conditions that led to the coup. Kissinger says that "they created the conditions as great as possible." Nixon and Kissinger also discussed how they would play this event with the media and lamented the fact that, if this were the era of Eisenhower, then they would be seen as heroes. There was a PDB that had a section on Chile dated 11 September 1973 that is still completely censored, as was an entire page on Chile provided to Nixon on 8 September 1973. Additionally, a cable from CIA operative Jack Devine dated 10 September 1973, confirmed to top U.S. officials that the coup would take place the following day.
don't ask:

#one thing the CIA loves: encouraging a military coup#one thing the CIA hates: democratically elected leader of other countries practicing socialism

quick reminder that 9/11 isn’t only an important date in us history, but also in chilean history as well.
today marks the start of a military dictatorship that ruled chile for 17 years (1973-1990) due to the political intervention of the united states. this period was characterized by blatant human rights violations, with people getting exiled from their own country because of their political beliefs and chileans (of all ages) getting tortured under this military regime.
according to the informe rettig (a comission that investigated the human rights violations during the dictatorship), there is an estimate of 28,259 victims of political prison and torture, 2,298 executed and 1,209 detenidos desaparecidos (people that “went missing” while they were detained by military authorities). these people ranged from figures of political opposition, their relatives, students, indigenous people, immigrants, underage kids, among many others.
despite the fact that the dictatorship of augusto pinochet was over fifty years ago, there are still chilean citizens that do not know what happened to their loved ones that went missing during this time period.
fuerza a todos los familiares y amigos de los detenidos desaparecidos. merecen justicia.
ni perdón ni olvido.
To the cry "¡Nunca más!" (never again), thousands of Chilean women surround the Moneda Palace to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the violent coup d'état of September 11, 1973, in Chile. A cry for all Latin America: Never again!
