Sally called for her creator as she headed down the ramp to the bottom floor of the tower. She strolled daintily across the tile to his lab, and went inside without hesitation. Finkelstein was right where she expected him to be- off to the side of the room working on some sort of project. Jewel was standing to his left, presumably helping him.Â
They both looked up as she entered.Â
âAh, Sally. Come in, my girl.â The doctor turned his attention back to the work in front of him. âDo you need something?âÂ
âI just wanted to let you know Iâll be heading out now,â She told him.
âI see. And where will you be headed?âÂ
âWellâŠâ Sally hesitated, â...Jack made some plans for us today, I believe. Although I donât know exactly where heâs taking me..â
The Doctor made a noise through his nose, â-fooling around with that boyfriend of yours again, I should have guessed.âÂ
âOhh, leave her alone, Finky. I think itâs sweet.â Jewel smiled at her and nodded kindly. âHave a horrible time, Sally. Weâll see you later then.âÂ
âJust donât be out too late.â
She nodded, thanked them, and was on her way.Â
Needless to say, Sally had been pretty ecstatic when she received a phone call from her lover earlier that morning. He informed her that he cleared his schedule so the two of them could spend the day together, and she agreed to meet him in town by the fountain, right before lunch time. At first, Sally was worried this was some important date she was forgetting. But it wasnât. He explained that he just wanted to see her again, and that this was something he wanted to plan for a bit now. She figured he must have been missing her- Jack was like that sometimes.
When Sally arrived in town, it was about as busy as it normally is. Creatures and monsters of all kinds were hurrying around, continuing out their day. She gazed up at the pumpkin sun, smiling as the warm light washed over her face. A murder of crows could be heard in the distance, squawking about. Sally could already tell she was going to have a horrific time this afternoon, and she couldnât wait to see her beloved skeleton again.Â
The fountain was within her view now. And so was Jack.
The Pumpkin King was standing just where he said heâd be. His back was facing Sally, and he had one hand on his hip. He waved to people as they passed him, mumbling a few greetings here and there too. Her heartbeat quickened at the sight. Smiling wider, she sped up her pace and approached him. He jolted slightly and whipped around to face her as she grabbed his hand with zero hesitation.Â
âJack-â
âSally! There you are!â He placed an arm around her to pull her into a hug, âIâve been waiting, Iâm so glad youâre here.âÂ
She blushed a tiny bit and hugged him back, â...Glad to be here as well, very horrible to see you again, Jack.âÂ
âYes, I missed you dearly..âÂ
She laughed, âItâs only been a few days..âÂ
âStill..â He chuckled lightly and let go of her. âAlright, Sal⊠thank you for agreeing to come with me today. I have.. Quite a bit planned, Iâm sure it will be the most dreadful experience.â
âI canât wait..â Sally brushed a piece of hair away from her cheek. âWhere are we headed to first, darling?âÂ
âI was thinking⊠lunch.â He took her by the hand, âif you want to⊠I thought, a picnic by the lake would be nice?â
âOhh, that sounds marvelous..â she squeezed his hand in return, âIâm quite hungry, actually. Iâd love that.â
âFantastic. I was hoping youâd say so⊠I kind of.. set it up already.âÂ
Sally laughed, âthinking ahead.. I like that.â
âShall we be off then?âÂ
âWe Shall.âÂ
â
By now, Sally was used to the stares she would get whenever her and Jack were seen around town together. It had, after all, only been a few weeks since the two of them started dating. After the pumpkin king had gone so long being a single man, it was odd to see him⊠well, not single.Â
But Sally didnât mind the curious looks. If anything, it only fueled her. She was proud to be the one to have won his heart. Hard for her to believe sometimes, yes, but it was true. She squeezed his hand tighter, sighing contently.Â
The two of them spoke briefly on their stroll towards the lake. Sally asked how Zero was doing, and Jack was curious to know if she was working on any new projects. But for the most part, they just wanted to enjoy each other's company. And it only seemed moments before the lake came into view in the distance.Â
Jack was speaking truthfully when he said heâd already set everything up. Sally could see there was a rather large, dark blanket lying on the ground in typical picnic-like fashion. Sitting on top of it was a basket, with a couple small plates and napkins stacked next to it. Dark, rich red roses were scattered around the edges. It was a very pretty set up- very romantic.Â
âOhh⊠this is lovely..â Sally spoke as they approached.
â...You think so?â
âOf course,â the two of them strolled forward and came to sit on opposite sides of the blanket. Jack looked pleased as he reached for the basket. â...What did you bring?â
âWell, I made us some sandwiches,â he answered, â-one has worms, and the other, beetles. I was going to let you pick.âÂ
He placed down two plates and reached into the basket. Pulling out the sandwiches he spoke of, he placed those down on the plates. Then continued looking through the basket. âI brought some other things too, of course⊠a bag of spider legs,- oh! And here.â He pulled two tea cups out of the basket as well. Sally watched as he filled them with what she could only assume to be tea, out of an unlabeled bottle. She smiled.
âOh, this is all so wonderful, Jack. Iâve never been on a picnic like this before. Thank you..â
âItâs my pleasure, my goal is for you to have the most horrific time today.â
âMm..â Sally leaned back to rest on her hand, folding her legs. She couldnât help but think.. something seemed off about her boyfriend. What with the way kept mentioning he wanted her to have a âhorrific dayâ, and all. She knew he had good intentions, but she couldn't shake the feeling there was more to this he wasnât telling her. Almost like there was something on his mind.Â
âWhich sandwich would you prefer, Sal?â She looked up suddenly.Â
âWhat? Oh, um..â she thought for a second, adjusting her dress as she was snapped from her thoughts, â..I donât mind. I guess, worms would be good.âÂ
She nodded her thanks as Jack leaned over and handed the sandwich to her. It did look really good- sheâd nearly forgotten how hungry she was. Taking her first bite was just as satisfying.Â
âSo,â Jack spoke, deciding to strike up a conversation, âHow was your morning?âÂ
âJust fine, thank you. I was very glad to receive your phone call. How was yours?âÂ
âPretty uneventfulâ he paused to sip his tea, â..most of my time was spent trying to convince the mayor that taking one day off isnât going to ruin our plans for the rest of the year.â They both chuckled.Â
âHeâs quite dramatic, isnât he?âÂ
âThat he is. He means well, though.âÂ
They both fell silent. Sally studied Jackâs face as she crunched onto a spider leg, trying to read his expression. His eye sockets shifted over to hers suddenly and she blinked, slightly embarrassed to have been caught staring but didnât look away.Â
âSally?âÂ
âYes?â
â..this is a bit of a random question, butâ he put his cup down, â..do you ever think about⊠your future?â
âMy future..?â
âYes. You know, like..â he leaned back a bit and thought for a moment, â...like, where youâd see yourself. Or how youâd want things to be.âÂ
âHmmâŠâ Sally pondered this question, â..well, yes, I suppose I do..âÂ
âReally?â he looked intrigued, â..and what sort of things do you think about? If you donât mind me asking..âÂ
âWell⊠oh, I donât know..â, she put her sandwich down to reach for her own tea, âJust..the normal things, I suppose. I think Iâd like to...get married somedayâŠâ she broke eye contact and stared down at the orange liquid in her cup. â...and maybe.. have a family⊠you know?âÂ
âA familyâŠâ Jack paused, âyou mean, like⊠children?âÂ
The ragdoll felt her face warm. â...yeah.âÂ
Once again they both went quiet. Sally wondered if maybe she said the wrong thing. But thatâs a perfectly normal thing to want, right? Surely..Â
â-That sounds lovely, Sal.â She looked up suddenly as Jack spoke. His posture was relaxed and his expression looked understanding. â..I guess itâs just a matter of seeing where things go, then.â
âI suppose so..â She tilted her head at him, becoming sort of curious, â-why do you ask about this, Jack?âÂ
âWhat? Oh, well⊠I donât know..â He glanced away for a moment and rubbed the back of his neck nervously. âI guess Iâve just⊠been thinking about it quite a bit myself, lately.â
âReally?â Sally put her cup down, âAnd what sorts of things do you think about?â
He hesitated, his gaze shifted downward. â...about the same as you, I guess..âÂ
âI seeâŠâ
After a moment Jack looked back up. It was then that he decided to change the subject entirely.
â-How are you enjoying the food?â
âOh, this is delicious, thank you.â
âIâm glad you think so, let me know if you need anything else, alright?â
âOf course.âÂ
Jack and Sally spent the next hour or so chatting away as they finished up their picnic. It was very nice to be spending quality alone time together like this again. They both found themselves enjoying it immensely.Â
Sally didnât try to think about or pry anymore into what Jack might have on his mind. If there was something he wanted to talk about, Sally figured heâd say something. Otherwise, she wanted to be respectful and leave it be. So she tucked away her suspicions in the back of her mind instead, and decided to carry on with whatever Jack had planned.Â
Once they finished eating and everything, Sally thanked him yet again for bringing her out there. With such a fine view of the lake, it made for the most lovely date. They packed everything up and headed back to Jackâs house where he ran inside to put his stuff away. Sally was able to say Hi to Zero, and the two met back outside by Jackâs gate. Sally squeezed his hand.Â
âWhat did you have planned next, dearest?âÂ
âSomething simple,â He squeezed her hand back, âI was thinking we could take a walk? It is such a terrible day afterall. Through the Hinterlands maybe? What do you think?âÂ
âOh, Iâd love that,â Sally smiled happily as they started forward, â-and after all that sitting too, my legs really need stretching.âÂ
Jack chuckled, âSounds like a plan then.â And started them on the path towards the Hinterlands.Â
By the time they got there, the pumpkin sun was high in the sky. Its orange light swept over everything, gracefully as the bat flies. It truly was a terrible day, the perfect weather to take a walk. Sally was practically beaming as they started down the trail. She gazed up at the swirling trees all around them, wondering just how tall they were. Leaves and sticks snapped and cracked under their shoes as they strolled along.Â
âThis is so peaceful, Jack⊠itâs just what I wanted..âÂ
âIâm glad to hear you say that. Have you ever visited the Hinterlands?âÂ
âNot like this..â She shook her head, âIâve come to the edge of it to collect herbs before⊠but I've never walked around or through it.âÂ
âAh, I see. Youâre in for a treat then, It's a gorgeous place.â
âI can see that... '' Sally gazed around, wide eyed. â..this is where you discovered the holiday doors, isnât it?âÂ
âYes, indeed. Itâs a pretty far walk though, so we donât have to go there today. Maybe another time though, Iâd love for you to visit Christmas Town.âÂ
She chuckled, âYou really think Sandy Claws would let you over there? After everything?âÂ
âHey, now, he and I are on good terms now.â He laughed a bit as well, âBesides, if itâs just for a visit Iâm sure he wouldnât mind. Itâs not like I'd be going there to steal anything⊠again.âÂ
âFair point.âÂ
They continued on, making small conversation but mostly enjoying each otherâs company and the view of the trees around them.Â
As they walked Sally briefly let go of Jackâs hand to adjust hair that had blown into her face by the sleight breeze that drifted through them as they walked. She couldnât help but notice the sticks scattered on the ground, some of them bigger than the others. She wondered if maybe a recent storm had knocked them down.Â
As she turned to ask her boyfriend a question, she neglected to see a particularly large branch on the ground a few paces ahead of her. Unfortunately, in just the wrong spot.Â
âJack, why does- !â She gasped as she suddenly tripped, her foot caught on the jaggedy surface. Jack tried to reach out and catch her, but because he didnât have her hand, he missed. Sally went tumbling down with an âoofâ.Â
âSally!â Jack's voice was edged with panic as he shouted for her. He crouched down to her level trying to help her up right away, âAre you alright?!âÂ
The ragdoll lifted herself up onto her elbows, turning to face Jack and taking his hand. âEugh...y-yeah⊠Iâm okay..â Her face and chest were covered in dirt from the impact. Jack helped her sit up a little bit more, and only then noticed the rest of the damage.Â
âDarling, your leg..!âÂ
Sally looked down, surely enough, her leg had become detached at the knee. The thread was completely broken, and leaves were spilling out everywhere. She could feel her left arm was a bit loose as well.Â
She brushed the dirt from her cloth skin as she tried to reassure her now worried boyfriend. âJack, Iâm fine, really. I didnât get hurt-â
âBut your leg-â
âIs fine! I brought my spool and needle with me, we just need to reattach it, that's all.â
âIt really doesnât⊠hurt?âÂ
âNot at all.âÂ
Jack sighed, still on edge but very relieved that she was okay. Sally flipped around so that she was sitting up straight, and reached into her pocket.
â...That was some fall, what happened?â He asked.Â
âI think I.. tripped on something..â She pulled out her spool of thread and reached behind her ear for the needle. Then motioned toward her detached leg. Jack took the hint and grabbed it, pushing it up towards her. Then he paused.Â
âMay I⊠help you? If itâs alright?âÂ
âHelp me?âÂ
âYes,â he pointed to her limb, âIâd like to try⊠sewing you.âÂ
Heâll admit, that sounded like an odd request outloud. But Sally didnât seem to mind. She thought for a moment, then handed him the respected tools.Â
âYes, alright. Go ahead.â She decided to take this moment to tighten up the stitches on her arm instead. While she did that, Jack got busy with her leg.Â
He threaded the needle first then stuffed all her leaves back inside. Then did his best to line it up with her knee. After some reassurance, he hesitated, then pushed the thread through until it broke the skin. With that, he began to sew her up.Â
Jack couldnât help but take note of the other details across her leg that he had never noticed. The way her stitches made such a cute, intricate pattern. He also noticed how smooth, and quite soft her skin was, something heâd never thought about considering he had never done this before. He found himself staring at her legs and, slightly ashamed of himself, opted to look up instead while his hands continued to work.Â
He noticed Sally tugging at the seams across the middle of her arm, presumably tightening them. They must have come loose in the fall as well.Â
Finally finished, he tied a small knot and snapped the end off. He briefly gazed over his work- it seemed to be pretty good, but Sally would have to be the judge of that.Â
âWhat do you think?â he asked, âTight enough?âÂ
He sat back while the ragdoll stretched out her leg, bent it, then brushed her fingers neatly over the seams.Â
â-Itâs perfect, Jack, thank you. You did wonderfully.âÂ
âNot a problem at allâ The skeleton stood up, and offered his hand to her. She took it, stood, and walked a few paces just to be sure. Jack rejoined her and wrapped his arm around her shoulders, chuckling lightly. âThis time, Iâm going to make sure youâre safe. You wonât be falling again.âÂ
Sally giggled, âMy hero..â And wrapped an arm around him in return before they both continued on their walk, happy, ready for their date to resume right where they left off.Â
â
Sally was ecstatic to be spending the rest of the day with her beloved. Jack wasnât kidding when he said he had a lot of stuff planned. After their walk through the Hinterlands, They decided to head back to Jackâs place to spend some time there. Jack had some books he wanted to show her, then they watched a movie together. Snuggling on the couch- that was most enjoyable.Â
By this time, the afternoon was finally turning into the evening. They hit a couple different places before Jack took Sally to their favorite restaurant for dinner. He paid for all their food, and even bought Sally a very delicious dessert- a Melting Blood cake. Which they shared, and were barely able to finish.Â
Once they were done eating, the sun was just about starting to go down. Jack informed her that he had one more thing on their to-do list for tonight, and he suggested they watch the sunset from the top of spiral hill.Â
Sally was more than happy to oblige, that sounded like quite the wonderful idea to her. Like the perfect way to end what had been the most perfect day.Â
The ragdoll followed him to the top of the hill, reaching out to grab his hand when they got there. They turned, faced towards the sun setting across town. It edged slowly, washing its golden light over the buildings as it did. Sally sighed contently. Here she was, holding her lover's hand, watching the sunset from the place theyâd shared their first kiss. Oh, how could things get any better?Â
ââŠSally?â
She glanced up as Jack spoke her name, very softly.Â
âYes?âÂ
âAre you happy?â
Sally blinked, slightly surprised at the question. âOh, yes, Jack. Iâm very happy, more than Iâve ever been before.â
ââŠand your day today. Just as horrific as I said it would be?âÂ
âEven more.. youâve done so much for me. Iâd..Iâd almost say youâre treating me like a queen.âÂ
The sentence rolled off Sallyâs tongue before she could really think about it. Not that she was wrong- he was in fact treating her extra special that day. One could wonder.. why?
She blushed a bit and looked up at him, waiting for a reply. For a moment, his expression was blank. Before his sockets went half lidded and he smiled.Â
âFunny⊠that you would say that.âÂ
âOh..?â her heartbeat quickened a tiny bit. Surely not..
âYeah..â he turned towards her suddenly and cupped both of her hands inside his own. âSally⊠I need to ask you something.â
âWâŠwhat is it..?â She trembled slightly, having a feeling what might come next but finding it hard to believe. He continued.Â
âI know we⊠havenât been together for very long. But.. these past couple weeks that Iâve had you by my side, have surely been some of the best. And I know, from the bottom of my heart, that I donât want anyone else by my side. And I never will want anyone else by my side.âÂ
Her heart rate quickened yet again, eyes swelling up with tears this time.Â
âJâŠJ-Jack..â
â-I know that⊠every part of me loves you, so very dearly. And I want you by my side forever.âÂ
He got down on one knee.Â
Sally clasped a hand over her mouth as her tears began to fall. She sobbed lightly, her heart overflowed as she could hardly believe this was real. She tried one more time to say his name, but it came out cracked and broken amidst her cries. Jack almost looked ready to cry himself, as he squeezed her hands one final time.
âSally FinkelsteinâŠ. My dearest friend⊠and most beloved angel of my nightmaresâŠâÂ
He leaned forward.
ââŠWill you marry me?âÂ
âŠ
âŠ
âŠ.
ââŠ.YES!âÂ
Sally burst into tears and sprang forward, barely leaving Jack anytime to get back to his feet and catch her. They wrapped their arms around each other tightly. Neither wanting to let go nor planning on it. Jack could feel her crying into his suit, not that he minded at all. He went to give her a kiss on the cheek before she lifted her head very suddenly to catch his lips. Jack melted into the kiss and they held each other, staying there for several moments. Neither of them needed air anyway.Â
Finally they separated and Jack cupped Sallyâs face, moving close so their foreheads were touching. Tears were still spilling out from her eyes, and a large smile was plastered across her face. She attempted to get words out, only partially succeeding.Â
âShhh,â he hushed her calmly. âTake a deep breath, my love. Itâs alright.âÂ
Sally did as he suggested and took a few deep breaths, trying to calm herself down. That seemed to do the trick.Â
âJackâŠâ she choked out, wiping her eyes, âI love you..â
âI love you tooâŠI really, really do.â
âD-Did you have this planned⊠all day..?âÂ
âOf course I did. I needed it⊠to be special, you know?â He held her close and chuckled lightly. âIâm sorry, I donât.. have the ring yet. Itâs currently being made- but once I heard, I ah, got so I excited⊠I just had to ask-â
âN-No, itâs okay, Jack. Itâs okay. Iâm glad you asked⊠oh.. youâve made me so, so happy.â
âAnd youâve made me happy, Sally..âÂ
She nuzzled into him more, holding him tighter.Â
âSo⊠this means, I-I can, move in with you?â
âIf thatâs what youâd likeâ
âYesâŠyesâ more tears fell, âoh, Jack, I love you so much.âÂ
âI-I love you too, Sal..â he wiped his own socket, realizing heâd become a bit choked up himself. ââŠweâre not.. moving too fast, are we?â
âOh, oh noâŠâ she reassured him, âbelieve me, Jack, thereâs nobody Iâd rather be with either. I love you, okay? With all of my heart.â
âSo you said⊠I feel the exact same.â
The sun had gone completely down by now. The moon gradually rose above them, and the graveyard swallowed in the darkness. The atmosphere couldnât be more perfect. Jack and Sally collapsed into kisses on top the hill, all they really wanted was to be by, and with each other right now.Â
I feel like we as a society do not appreciate fanfic writers enough. Imagine commiting to something you don't get paid for, not always appreciated, taking up a huge chunk of your time and the worst of all, some a**hole complaining that fanfic writing isn't actual writing.
The sound of the skeletal rooster crowing at the top of itâs nonexistent lungs was nothing new to Jack Skellington. It was the same sound he heard every morning- not that he cared. It woke him up just fine, so who was he to complain?
Jack turned over in his bed. He yawned and opened his sockets a tiny bit, waiting for his vision to adjust to the golden light of the pumpkin sun that was beginning to stream in from a nearby window. The first thing he laid eyes on was the beautiful river of red hair lying next to him. Sally was still asleep, resting on her side with her arms folded neatly in front of her. Her back was facing Jack, but he could hear her snoring softly. AÂ warm smile came across his skull, and he sighed contently.Â
It had only been a month or so since the two of them were married, and Jack still found himself getting used to waking up with someone else in his bed. But he loved Sally with every ounce of his phantom heart; and wouldnât have it any other way. Carefully, without disturbing her, Jack scooted closer and moved a piece of hair away from her cheek. He leaned down and kissed her gently, pressing his lips to the stitches that fell neatly under her eye. She stirred, but didnât wake.Â
He sat up, stretched his back, and decided now would be the best time to get up. Jack crawled out from under the blanket and finally to his feet. Yawning one last time, he headed straight for the closet, ready to get dressed and start his day.Â
--
Jack cracked the egg into the pan, listening as it sizzled. After getting dressed and coming downstairs, he decided to make breakfast awhile. He wasnât sure if Sally would be up before he had to leave, but, he always made enough for two just in case. At the very least, she could reheat it later. Or not- rotten eggs and toast were just as good cold.Â
As he prepared their plates, his mind wandered around as it always does. He thought about Sally.. how beautiful, and sweet she was. Jack could still hardly believe they were finally.. well, together together. He glanced down at his wedding ring, smiling to himself.
A slight creek of the floorboards caught his attention. He glanced up, half expecting to see nothing, but to his delight was instead greeted by the image of Sally standing in the doorway. She was still wearing her nightgown, which was white in color and very light. It was made out of a smooth, silky material and fell just a little ways past her hips. She smiled at him.Â
â..I thought I heard you get up.â
âSally.â Jack smiled back. âHorrible morning, my love. Did you sleep well?â
âJust terribly, thank you. And you as well I trust?â
âAs always.â Jack tilted his skull, keeping his gaze on his wife as he sliced their bread. âI apologize if I woke you..â
âOh, no.â Sally shook her head, and finally made her way over to him. âI was already awake, I just heard the door close.â
âOh, right. Well..â Jack leaned over and gave her a small peck on the cheek before motioning towards the stove. âIâm glad youâre awake, the eggs are almost ready. I hope thatâs alright for this morning?â
Sally inhaled deeply. âThey smell divine, Jack, thank you. Itâll do just fine but...you didnât have to, really, I couldâve made something for myselfâ
âNonsense, Iâm happy to cook for you. Unless.. of course, you really wanted to? If thatâs the case, Iâm sorry, I didnât mean-â
âJackâ Sally reached up to cup his face. He fell silent at the gesture. âItâs okay, dearest. It's not a big deal who cooks for who. I appreciate you thinking of meâ she patted the side of his face gently. âHow about, if I cook dinner, then weâll call it even?âÂ
The skeleton chucked, âDeal.â And kissed her once more before reaching over and sliding the rotten eggs onto their plates one by one.
--
After the couple finished up their breakfast, Jack washed the dishes and decided it was probably a good time to get ready to head into town soon. He was about to go back towards his bedroom to get his shoes when Sally called him into their living room. She spoke to him as he entered.
âJack, Could I make somethingâŠâ she pointed downward to the little ghost sleeping at her feet. ââŠfor Zero?â
He smiled at the thought. âLike what?â
âIâm thinkingâŠâ she tapped her chin. âA scarf?â
Jack walked over and sat down on the couch next to her. He reached for her hand, squeezing it. âI think thatâs a wonderful idea, Sal.âÂ
âDo you? Good.â She squeezed his hand back and leaned close, so their noses were almost touching. âI hoped youâd think so..â
Her sudden closeness caught him a little off guard, but Jack took the hint. âOf course..â he leaned forward and closed the gap between them, a bit relieved to have access to her lips this time. Sally kissed back and wrapped her arms around his neck, practically melting into him.Â
He wrapped his arms around her waist in response, enjoying this moment immensely. They probably would have continued, had a jarring noise not suddenly cut through the air.
Brrriiiing
Brrriiiing
Brrriiiing
The phone. It rang loudly, and startled both of them. Jack pulled away and looked in its direction.Â
âProbably the mayorâŠâ his tone sounded slightly annoyed. He turned to Sally. â- I should get that.â
âOf course, go ahead.âÂ
The king stood up and walked to the opposite side of the room where the phone was hanging on the wall. He hesitated, cleared his throat, then picked it up.
âSkellington residence. Jack speaki-â
âJack!!â the mayor's voice rang from the other side. âThank HALLOWEEN you answered! Where are you?â
âAh, horrible morning, Mayor. Still at home of course-â
âThere are things that need to be done, Jack!! Halloween is only 96 days away! Why arenât you here yet, itâs not like you to be late!â
If Jack had eyes, heâd be rolling them. âIâd hardly call it late..â
âItâs late by YOUR standards! Youâre usually in town by now, whatâs holding you?âÂ
âErâŠâ Jack glanced over at Sally, who was still sitting on the couch petting zero. ââŠI donât know, nothing I suppose. We just finished eating, Iâll be there as soon as I can.â
âHuff⊠alright. Terrible morning Jack, Iâll see you soon.âÂ
The skeleton hung up the phone and sighed. Typical mayor, never letting him get an ounce of alone time.Â
Sally stood off the couch and walked over. âI take it youâre leaving now?â
âIâm afraid I must. I apologize.âÂ
âItâs quite alright love, you have important things to take care of. I still need to get dressed, anywaysâ she brushed off her nightgown and stood on her tiptoes to give him one last kiss on the cheek. ââŠIâll try to come visit you in town later, how about it?âÂ
Jack nodded. âI would love that, thank you.â He glanced at the clock. â-I must be off. Iâll see you soon, Salâ he opened his arms and Sally came forward into his embrace. Her voice was muffled.
âSee you soon, Jack. I love you.â
âI love you too.â
--
It seemed to be a fairly average day in town. As Jack walked the streets he greeted people on the side like he always does, everyone happy to see him as usual. He was able to get to the town square in a reasonable amount of time, which was good, because the mayor was already there waiting for him. A small stack of papers were piled in his tiny hands.
âJack!! There you are!â He called out to him as he approached. âHorrible to see you, you almost scared me half to life when you werenât here!âÂ
Jack sighed. The Mayor can be so dramatic sometimes. âHorrible to see you as well, Mr. Mayor. Shall we get started for the day?âÂ
âAh, yes! Of courseâ, the shorter man cleared his throat and lifted the papers up to his face. âFirstly, we need to check in with all those who agreed to carve the pumpkins this year, to see how thatâs progressing. You have a meeting with the vampires around 9:30⊠oh! And there are some documents in your office youâre going to need to have signed by tomorrowâ
Jack nodded as he listened. âVery well, that all sounds⊠manageable. I suppose we should get started.â
âYes! Let's not waste any more timeâ The mayor tucked the papers under his arm and scurried off in another direction. Jack folded his hands behind his back, and reluctantly followed.Â
Jack Skellington found himself to be more tired than he thought he was. Or, maybe he was just bored. Or perhaps, a bit distracted. Maybe a little of all three.Â
Most of his morning consisted of meeting with people. Checking in on the pumpkin carving, the training of the bats, etc etc. He was almost relieved when it came time to finally head back to his office to sign those documents the mayor spoke of. Typically the same ones each year, so Jack didnât mind.Â
The skeleton was sat at his desk, writing away with his quill. He tapped his foot lightly and hummed to himself. He was almost through all the papers, when there was a knock at the door. He looked up.
âCome in.â
The doorknob turned slowly and the door opened. Jack sat up straight and smiled upon seeing who his visitor was.Â
âHello there, Sally.â
âHello, Jack.â Sally walked over to him happily, hands placed behind her back. â...I came to see you, just like I said.â
âSo you haveâ the skeleton chuckled and stood from his seat, coming around to meet her on the other side of the desk.
âHow was your morning?â She asked him.
âRelatively normal, the meetings ran smoothly. The vampires seem happy with their new role. How about you?âÂ
âVery good, thank you. Iâve already designed out a plan for Zeroâs scarf- I think Iâm going to head across town to buy some fabric for it after lunch.â She moved her head forward and leaned against her husband, taking his hand. â...I missed you, you know..â
âAwe, itâs only been a couple hoursâ he squeezed her hand back, â..I missed you as well. I felt bad leaving you so suddenly this morning.âÂ
âItâs nothing to feel bad about, dearest. You have important⊠kingly duties that need attending too.â
âYes, butâ Jack straightened his back to face her, brushing a piece of her hair to the side and cupping her cheek lovingly. â...Nothing is more important to me than you are.âÂ
Sally blushed a bit. âWell⊠Iâm here now.â
He chuckled again, âTrue. And in that case..â Jack brushed his thumb along the side of her lip, and wrapped his free hand around her waist. âMay I?â
âOf course..â
With both their eyes closed, they leaned in. Their lips barely brushed together when a loud bang was heard and the door suddenly swung open.Â
âJack!â the Mayor shouted as he strutted into the room, âSome of the ghosts have requested a meeting with you for this afternoon! Did you finish signing the-â he halted suddenly, noticing the image of the king and queen in front of him. â-papersâŠ.âÂ
Jack and Sally jolted away from each other, embarrassed. It would be one thing if they were in a private area, but technically Jack was supposed to be working right now. He let go of Sally and stared blankly at the mayor. It was quiet for a second, before the short politician spoke again.
âIs this⊠a bad time..?âÂ
âNo..â snapping out of it, the skeleton cleared his throat and shook his head. â-No! No, no, itâs alright. What is it that you need, Mayor?âÂ
âWell⊠ahem.â he adjusted his papers, â-I was just coming to check if you were finished! Like I said, the ghosts have a matter in which they wish to speak with you about, they were hoping for this afternoon.âÂ
âI see..â Jack glanced at Sally- who was staring at the ground- before walking back around the desk to check his meeting schedule. â...I should have enough time to fit something in. Let them know Iâll come find them as soon as I can.â
âWill do! How are the documents coming along?âÂ
âJust fine, Iâm almost finished.â
âRight, well⊠try to get done as quickly as possible! Remember thereâs a lot to do today. Iâll check back in soon!â As he turned to leave again, he realized he hadnât even acknowledged Sally. Not wanting to be rude, he tipped his hat to her awkwardly. â-horrible morning, Mrs. Skellington.âÂ
She forced a smile and waved. âMorning..âÂ
With one last nod, the Mayor turned and walked out the door. It shut with a very satisfying click.Â
âCall me crazy, but...â Jack sat down in his chair. â...I donât think we seem to be having very good luck today.â
âWell, that was certainly.. something.â She laughed nervously. âDoesnât seem that way, does it? I should probably get going.âÂ
âAwe, so soon?â He teased. Sally rolled her eyes.Â
âNice try, Mr. Skellington. Youâve got documents to finish.â She thought for a moment. âHow about.. If we meet up for lunch instead?â
âHorrific idea! Iâll come find you in⊠an hour maybe? How about it?âÂ
Sally smiled, heading towards the door. âSounds good, my love. Iâll see you soon.âÂ
âYou as wellâŠâ She blew Jack a kiss before finally departing.Â
The skeleton sighed, slightly frustrated about being interrupted again, and annoyed that heâs back to work when he knows heâd much rather be spending time with his wife. Just one day⊠that's all heâd ask for. But.. heâll get to see her again soon. Just knowing that sheâll be waiting to have lunch with him was enough to brighten his mood back up a bit. Picking up his quill, he dipped it in ink, and continued right where he left off.Â
--
âThis was a great idea, Sal.â Jack smiled at her as they walked along the side of the street, hand in hand. The restaurant they were going to eat at was just a few buildings away. âIt feels like it's been ages since weâve eaten out like this.â
âOh, I agreeâ The ragdoll fluttered her eyelashes. â-And the nicest part is, we can spend more time together. I know we usually eat lunch just the two of us, but, It does feel like youâve been rather busy as of late..â
âAh, yes. Once we hit less than 100 days until Halloween.. My schedule can get pretty crowded.â He squeezed her hand, â-but you know Iâll always make time for you, just say the word, day or night.â Sally giggled.Â
âI know⊠but I do hate to bother you when youâre busy.â
âIâll never be too busy for you, Sallyâ The couple exchanged a heartfelt glance as they approached the doors to the restaurant. Jack held it open for her, bowed, and winked.
â-After you, my Queen.âÂ
The two chose to sit in the back, in a small secluded booth where they could finally be alone. They placed their drinks, which came rather quickly, and then their orders. Sally finally relaxed her shoulders and sighed.
âI forgot how nice this place is..â She admitted, âHow long has it been since we were here?â
âHmmâŠâ Jack thought for a moment. â...I donât think weâve been here since before our wedding.â
âOh, my. Well then, Iâm very glad you could make it here with me.âÂ
âAs am I..â he hesitated, before adding. â..The mayor seems determined on keeping us apart today, doesnât he?âÂ
She laughed. âIt does seem that way. I think he just wants you to stay focused on Halloween.âÂ
âOhh, come on now. Iâm plenty focused.âÂ
âReally? You werenât thinking of me at all, earlier?â She teased him.
âWellâŠâ
âThatâs what I thought.â Sally laughed, grabbing the top of her straw and moving it to sip her Drink. Jack tried not to smile but couldnât help himself.Â
âAlright, you got me. Maybe I was a little distractedâŠâ he reached across the table and placed his hand on top of hers. âBut how could I not be, when youâre soâŠâ He searched his head for the right word, â...alluring.âÂ
She blushed a bit and intertwined her fingers into his. âYou arenât bad yourself, you know..â
The skeleton chucked, and opened his mouth to reply before being instantaneously cut off by a loud voice echoing through the restaurant.Â
âJACK!! There you are!!â
For the love of the Pumpkin Patch you have GOT to be kidding me.
Jack turned around and sure enough, the mayor was rushing towards them with his unhappy face flipped. As he ran up to them he showed absolutely zero regard to the fact that he was OBVIOUSLY barging right into their date.
âMayor-â
âJACK!! Iâve been looking everywhere for you!! We have a problem, we need you to come quick!âÂ
He glanced at Sally, then back to the mayor. âSurely, this can wait? I havenât even-â
âNO!! Thereâs been an accident with the pumpkins!! We need you right NOW!!âÂ
The king sighed. Never a moment's peace. He looked at Sally, who had an expression of pity on her face. He felt absolutely horrible that their moment was being ruined yet again. And for a reason that was probably unnecessary, knowing how the mayor tends to overreact. But, it was clear he wasnât going to leave without Jack.Â
âAlright, alright. Iâll be right there..â He turned to his wife. âSally-â
âNo, Jack. Itâs okay. I understand, this seems important.â She took his hand and they both stood out of their seats. âIâll just take our food to go, okay? See you at home, dearest.â Jack nodded solemnly, kissed her once on the cheek and took his leave, following closely behind the mayor. Annoyance burned in the back of his throat, but he tried to swallow it and decided to just deal with the situation as quickly as possible. The sooner he could get home to Sally, the better.Â
--
Truth be told, Sally expected this sort of thing to happen. The mayor⊠he was always like this. Could never seem to take a hint. But it was alright, it couldnât be helped. She understood that perfectly.
The ragdoll was back at Skellington manor now, sitting on the second floor in her sewing room. She was currently working on that scarf she wanted to make Zero. As disappointed as she was that her date with Jack a few hours ago was cut short, she was at least somewhat glad to get started on this. After leaving the restaurant she spent some time around town, chatted with the witches a bit, purchased the fabric she needed and even was able to call and have a short conversation with Jewel over the phone.Â
For Zeroâs scarf she picked the color combination of black, white, and orange, thinking it would go well for the ghostly pup. At the moment, he was sleeping soundly at her feet, seeming unaware of the gift his mistress was making him.Â
Sally glanced at the clock, wondering how long it would be before Jack would return home. Almost on cue, she heard the front door open.
Jack was exhausted after today. Sure, he got lots of work done, but it seemed to be that the one thing he wanted to do was the one thing he couldnât - spend time with his beloved. While yes, they have all the time they could want together during most of the evening and the night, but it doesnât feel much the same. He wanted to be able to do more with her, spend time around town, without getting interrupted constantly. He knows that he usually gets busy around this time- but- this would be the first time experiencing a busy rush while being a married man.Â
Jack shook his head to clear it. He reminded himself that this wonât be his only opportunity- that didnât stop him from being annoyed, however. But he was home now. So it no longer mattered.Â
He slipped off his shoes, and then his suit jacket, hanging it up by the door. âDearest?â he called, âIâm h-!â
Jackâs sentence was cut off as Sally came at him suddenly, jumping and wrapping her arms around him. He made an âoofâ sound as her weight was thrusted onto his chest, rather unexpectedly.
âSal..â
âWelcome home, my love!â she cooed.
âAh...haha..thank you. Iâm glad to finally be here.â
âSo am I..âÂ
âWhat have you been up to..?â
âOh, nothing much. But I have been waiting for you. What do you say we relax a bit? Before making dinner?âÂ
âAfter today? Iâd love nothing more.â The skeleton chucked and let go of her. They walked across the room to the lunge area, sitting back on the couch where they were that morning so they could be more comfortable. A bit of cuddling would really hit the spot right now.Â
Jack sat down and opened his arms to her, to which Sally took the invitation right away. She fell into his lap with no hesitation, then onto her back to the side which pulled him down next to her. They wrapped their arms around each other and Sally nuzzled herself into his collar. She sighed blissfully through her nose.Â
âI needed this⊠I love you, Jack..âÂ
âI love you tooâ Jack smiled, he tilted his head down and left soft kisses across her cheek that trailed down the stitches by her lips. She giggled at this, about to turn her head to kiss him back when,
SCCRRRREEEEEEEECCCHHHHHH!
The doorbell screamed loudly, once again startling the both of them. Jack, fed up, expressed his annoyance out loud this time.Â
âAre you serious right now..â
Sally couldnât help but laugh. âYou were right, itâs just not our day, is it?âÂ
âI donât feel like getting upâŠâ
âJack, go answer the door please.âÂ
SCCRRRREEEEEEEECCCHHHHHH!
It rang again. Jack grumbled.Â
âThis is getting kind of ridiculous..âÂ
âSweetheart, the sooner you answer the door, the sooner you come back here.âÂ
As ticked off as he was, Jack knew she was right. Reluctantly, both of them sat up and let go of eachother. The king got off the couch and began making his way towards the door.
SCCRRRREEEEEEEECCCHHHHHH!
âJAAACK?? ARE YOU HOME?â
The third screech was accompanied by the mayor's voice. Go figure. Whatever he wanted, it better be important. He was ecstatic when Jack opened the door.Â
âAh!! There you are!! I thought I'd seen you come back here.â Trying to stay patient with him, Jack just nodded.Â
âYes, do you need something, Mr. Mayor?âÂ
âRight, of course! I just wanted to bring you these.â He held out a stack of papers in his hand. He explained, â..These are the things Iâve gathered that need to be done in the next two days!! Thereâs quite a bit on there⊠I figured you might want to get a head start!âÂ
He took the stack from him and examined it. He was right⊠There was a lot. But Jack really wasnât in the mood for this right now.Â
â..I see. Thank you, Mayor, Iâll be sure to get started as soon as possible.â
âHorrible to hear!! Well, I have to get going. Iâve got a few more things to organize myself- have a terrible night, Jack!â
âYou as well.â He bid him goodbye, and shut the door behind him.
Finally back inside, Jack dropped the papers onto the counter. He paged through them briefly⊠It could take a while to get through this. It would probably be wise to start that night.
But no.
Right now, all he really wanted to do was be by Sallyâs side. Just to hold her, and not have to worry about anything for a little while.Â
He brushed the papers off to the side, deciding right then that he would deal with it tomorrow morning. Because right now, he finally, FINALLY had the one thing he wanted all day.Â
You ever open up a fic and barely a paragraph in your whole body starts trembling with giddy excitement?
The plot is exactly right and the atmosphere and the voice are all soul-singingly good, right at the very beginning, and you have to stop yourself from hooting like a crazy old wizard because Oh HOo HOOOOOO this oneâs gonna be GOOD
